Looked forward to visiting this, and the building is very impressive from the outside. Staff are very friendly, but there was only one room of paintings, and not very much else

Worth a visit as the building is beautiful, inside and out, and some of the exhibitions are very interesting indeed.

You don't tend to expect much from a provincial museum, but this one has such an interesting collection and is in such good state that a visit is highly recommended. Would have liked to spend some more time there...

The permanent collection contains many gems, in painting, archaeology and especially sculpture. 19th century French academic art is well represented; highlights of the museum include a Bourdelle bust, a huge painting of the Dream of Carpeaux, medieval sculpture gallery, local Roman finds and, in the crypt ( where else) a terrifying Egyptian mummy in her coffin, with enamel eyes and tiny bony hands, with a look so animate, so pitiful and so conscious that I nearly fled back out on to the street. Great .
