“An OK property in a good location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 August 2013

Our first hotel on our holiday, and while it's a little bit grotty, it's in a really good location and is perfectly OK if you're not spending too long in your room. Things were a bit broken and mucky, and I couldn't open my window without moths getting in, but other than that it was fine.

A lovely little hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Conveniently located (although a bit tricky to find in the eveing as not well-signposted). Great place to base ourselves for three days while we explored the World War I battlefields and cemetaries of the Somme Valley. We found Amiens itself a really nice city to visit. The older areas around the cathedral are fascinating, shopping is cheap and exciting, and the restaurant and bar strip along the canal (2 minutes walk from the hotel) provdes a wonderful variety of food with great ambience. And we found the people of Amiens to be some of the friendliest people we've ever met in France.

Room Tip: We were in the wing at the rear of the hotel, probably quieter than the main building.

I had a nice, small room on the third floor overlooking the rooftops. It's a convenient location within easy walking distance of the railway station and centre of town. The place was very clean and the staff friendly and helpful. They let me store my bike in the courtyard at the back of the hotel. There is no elevator and the staircase is narrow and semi-spiral, difficult to get up with your bags unless you are strong and fit. Good value for money.

This "hotel" is down a dirty side street in a part of the town where, it seems, it is okay to urinate around light poles and leave the dog do on the pavement. This "hotel" was clean but had no lift and the world's tiniest staircase for hauling luggage to the third floor. The bathroom was separated from the bedroom by a curtain and even in April the room was too hot. We did not have breakfast there but it was obvious that the breakfast we had at the hotel opposite the station (for the same price) was better value. Stay elsewhere.

Only 3 blocks from the train station, this small hotel fulfilled my needs. I was travelling on my own so it wasn’t a problem but the bathroom only had a curtain as a door, so if you’re travelling with a companion, make sure you’re comfortable with each other. I booked a single room but was given a double and it was quite large with ample storage and hooks to hang your coats.
WIFI access was charged on a daily basis and was only available in the breakfast room (i.e. not in your room) - the cost was minimal.
The hotel is popular with business travellers who will wake you up early as they head off to work. The walls were a bit thin, as I could hear the man in the next room on the phone.
The breakfast was basic and cost extra but was convenient.
I didn’t have a problem with the spiral staircase and didn’t find it that tiny either. Perhaps if you have huge luggage, it might be a problem and certainly, if you have mobility problems, it wouldn’t be ideal as there was no lift.
English is only falteringly spoken by the staff but they were pleasant and helpful. I did my best to keep them busy on the day of my arrival but their manner remained the same.
I was in Amiens to do a Somme Battlefield tour and I chose a French guide, Terres de Memoire, which was wonderful. His tours are mostly directed at Australians, but he also does New Zealand, French and Canadian tours. Highly recommend him (Sylvestre).
I spent a day in Amiens as well. The cathedral was amazing and more than worthwhile to visit. In summer there is a lightshow in the evening. I also took a boat ride on the floating gardens, visited Jules Verne’s museum and the Musee de Picardie. I agree that Amiens wasn’t filled with the friendliest residents but its attractions are worth the effort.

We were keen to visit the Battlefields of the western front , so travelled from London to Lille on Eurostar - would higly recommend this experience, fast & efficient way to get to France direct from London. No waiting around at airports or paying for transport to get to the Airport in the first place.
We stayed at Hotel Alsace Lorraine, very close to the railway station. The only thing going for the place are the owners who were very helpful, particularly given that we didn't speak French.
The bathroom is shocking, one big tub with no possible way of having a comfortable shower. We were on the first floor - carting luggage up the tiniest spiral staircase I have ever seen.
We did a one day tour of the Battlefields -Australian Battlefields tour – Sylvestre Bresson, Terres de memoire Battlefields tour. I cannot recommend this highly enough. We were the only ones on his tour on that day, he pciked us up from the hotel and has an excellent knowledge & manner. We arranged this thru email prior to leaving. Sylvestre often picks up people who travel by train up from Paris for the day tour. In hindsight, this would be the best way to do it. Give Amiens the big swerve, it is ugly, people are not friendly and they have a lot to learn about providing a quality tourist service. Just visit the Battlefields by train from Paris.
