I went to the Bonsai hotel for a educational trip with the college, after reading many reviews i was slight weary of going to the hotel, i packed everything including sleeping bag and pillow...the room i stayed in was clean and the [--] was fresh...the room itself did have a smokey scent to it it was ok after cracking open a window.

the bathroom were clean however little dirrty marks on the botton of the shower, luckily i took flip flops to wear in shower. Besides that i thought for 30 euros the rooms were ok. i wouldnt advise people to sleep there if ur looking to stay for a week but a couple nights would be ok.

the breakfast was fine mainly toast, bread, choco pop etc bit sweet but fruit was avalaible.

We arrived at 4am due to a ferry problem and were given a room overlooking the carpark, which seems secure as there is cctv. We paid 31euros for 1 night for a double. The room needed a good clean - especially round the shower which had mould growing along the tray edges. The mattress was well worn and lumpy and had collapsed in the middle so we didn't get a decent nights sleep. Foyer area smells of stale smoke. All in all, I would pay an extra few euros and go somewhere else.

The inside of the room was very basic, the shower was no longer attached to the wall. The bottom 3 feet of the walls had had new paper stuck over the old paper rather than be decorated properly, the top bunk was rather rusty. The snoring man in the next room sounded like he was in my room and when he used his bathroom it sounded like he was sharing mine

The final straw was having no coffee or bread available for breakfast - for only 5 euros I know you wouldn't expect too much but no coffee in France?!.

I stayed at another hotel in Calais (the cottage) last week for about the same price and that was delightful.

We stayed here for 2 nights on 25th November. The room is basic, but clean. The bed is quite comfortable and spacious. There are no tea/coffee making facitites in the room, but there is a small bar located in the reception area. The staff were helpful and spoke English. We thought that the breakfast was not really worth 5 euro (there was cornflakes, bread, yoghurt and fruit). The Wi-Fi was 5 euro for 5 hours and the connection was very poor. All said, we used this hotel as a brief stopover whilst on a pre xmas booze run. For this purpose it was fine, but i would not stay longer than 2 nights.

I have stayed in this hotel about five times but only for one night. The only reason I stay here is because it is centrally located, just opposite the train station. The bus stop to come and go back to the ferry port is around the corner from the train station. If this was not the case, I would most certainly stay somewhere else.

When you enter into the hotel, you run into the reception area and the bar. I entered once to be greeted with thick clouds of smoke polluting the air. This may surprise people who live in countries with zero tolerance smoking laws in public places and was rather unpleasant. Staff are friendly and helpful but it would make a world of difference if they could give you a service with a smile.

What this hotel really needs is a good refurbish. The rooms are dark and sad and there is cold, equally sad lino on the floor which is very cold in the winter. Even the cheapest of cord floor coverings would make a welcome change! If you are coming in cold weather make sure you pack some warm winter socks or a pair of slippers. Also, I don't know if it is like this in all the rooms, but there are individual heaters and when you go in you have to put them on to heat up the room. The room took ages to heat up and I had to put on layers to keep warm. Calais, being next to the Englsih Channel, it is sometimes bitingly cold at night in a room that is not centrally heated.

Be aware that the bathrooms are very small but it meets your needs because you don't spend all day in the bathroom. The bedcovers are not fresh and you can smell that they are not regularly washed although thankfully the sheets are clean. On one occasion the room did not smell too pleasant, musky and not aired enough. In all, if you just need a place to put your head down for the night to do some shopping the next day, then this hotel could fit the bill. otherwise, if you want something a little bit more cheerful, you should spend a little more for a bit more comfort. When I am in Calais with children, I do not stay at the Bonsai Hotel because the room is too tiny for more than one or two persons with bathroom included.

  • Liked — Nothing
  • Disliked — No carpet under my feet, the sparseness of the room.
