“Dont Go”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 August 2014

I have visited and reviewed many hotels and on the whole these have been positive but for the first time ever I would say dont waste money staying here. It is very run down, we had a ground floor room that had a chipboard headboard! The shower was attached to taps in bath but you had to hold it over you whilst showering. Very noisy all night with people kicking contents of rubbish bin along the road. Breakfast for 2 delivered to room, one small jug of coffee, a bagette to share and jam all for 12 euros!!The room felt grubby and we felt uneasy all night. The man on reception has had a personality bypass. Sorry to be negative but all I can think is people giving good reviews are either relatives or visited a different hotel to us.

Room Tip: Dont bother

This hotel is within walking distance of the ferry terminal, railway station and the town centre. It is very basic, but spotlessly clean and I had no complaints about the bed. If you're stuck for somewhere to stay and on foot it's a lifesaver. The receptionist / manager speaks reasonably good English and gets the job done. If you speak French and have a sense of humour even better.

Room Tip: Rooms without bathroom must be the cheapest clean option in Calais.

We stayed here for one night just as a short break as foot passengers on the ferry, and for that purpose the hotel was absolutely fine. I think some reviewers here have much higher expectations of cheaper French hotels, because for its type it was pretty much up to the usual standard - simple, basic, clean but fine for one night.

Lack of restaurant/dining room is fine - if you don't fancy the breakfast in your room and are not up extra early there are plenty of places nearby to take breakfast while watching the world go by.

For a pre/post fery stop off the location couldn't be better, and I have to say that the hotel manager is perfectly polite and speaks good English. Lots of good, simple restaurants nearby - on the square and further into town.

Stayed a couple of years ago on our way to the ferry. We were taken in by the English Rose award at the entrance - should have checked how long ago it was awarded. Agree with Jackie0023, basic isn't the word! Our window looked down a shaft which was well used by the pigeons! Owner sullen and unfriendly. Wish we had stayed an extra night in Belgium and motored to the ferry early that morning - or gone to the nearby Hilton!

Room Tip: Don't bother!

As part of a group, we took 3 rooms here, double, twin and a 4-person 'family room'. Once again, a good experience all round, spotlessly clean, cars parked outside on the street in view from our windows, and breakfast (french bread, excellent selection of jams etc, coffee, chocolate or tea) brought on trays to our rooms. Now has rooms on ground floor. We put up with the French style bolsters, then discovered in the morning that US/English style pillows were in the wardrobe, if only we'd looked!

The manager is efficient and I've always found him pleasant & welcoming but he doesn't speak much English. He's not the 'have a nice day' type, which perhaps is why some reviewers here have said he's rude etc.

The hotel is close to the ferry port, in a convenient location after crossing to have some rest before driving on the continent.

I've been using the Hotel Victoria for about 10 years, as a stop over when I arrive by Chunnel or ferry. It ain't the Hilton, but it's clean and convenient, with street parking and 5 mins walk to numerous restaurants. Reasonably quiet environment, and beds, showers etc are fine. There's no dining room, but the manager brings a good continental breakfast to the room on a tray (extra fee, but I recommend it). Over the years, I've had a double, a twin and the 4-bed 'family' rooms. Good value if you want a place to stay the night before moving on; if you were looking for luxury or romance, it's probably the wrong place.

Room Tip: Rooms are up one or two flights of stairs, not a problem if you're fit!
