“Good budget hotel.....”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014 via mobile

The Cottage Hotel is a simple, basic but clean budget hotel. We paid 64 euros, spent one night over Easter and have no complaints. Easy to find and close to Citi Europe, Le Shuttle and Calais town centre. The rooms are quite small but the bed was comfy. Tea & coffee making facilities, sweets & biscuits! We didn't use the restaurant for either dinner or breakfast as the centre of town is so close, with a number of excellent cafes and restaurants. A good inexpensive stop-over hotel!

A glitch in my on-line booking through a booking agency was soon cleared up by the Manager, after the system booked 2 rooms instead of 1. She kindly did not charge the 2nd room, which we appreciated. This is good customer service!
For the price we paid, we found everything was fine. We dined in the Restaurant and found the prices very reasonable for the meal and wine; the only complaint is that the fish my husband ordered did not seem as fresh as it could/should be, coming from a coastal town.
Apart from that, the service throughout was courteous.

You don't, as others have said, expect a lot from a hotel at this price but we have stayed here before and found it a good place for an overnight stop. I hope our experience this time was a one off but we may not risk trying to find out again. We were made welcome enough on arrival but when we came down to the bar the staff seemed to view it as an intrusion and disappeared for a cigarette before we could order. When they returned we had to ask before they came to see what we would like. We had to ask for menus although we had made it clear we intended to dine in.

Dinner was not good. The buffet which we chose for a starter, but had not inspected before we did so, consisted of some very tired lettuce, tomato, cucumber and dishes of other salad items which may have been from tins. The only protein was some unattractive tuna. There was some mayonnaise and oil and vinegar offered as dressings. Neither bread nor water was brought to our table until we asked, which was after we had nearly finished the starter.

My blanquette de poulet was adequate though perhaps not freshly cooked, but my wife's fish soup which was billed as Marmite Calaisienne, which might have suggested that the ingredients were freshly sourced from the harbour, was very disappointing. It was supposed to contain three types of fish but only had two, one of which was salmon which was not freshly cooked but might have been recycled. It was lukewarm. At 16 euros this is not a cheap dish.

Our waitress was pleasant but seemed untrained and not very attentive to our needs. Only one other table was occupied during our dinner whereas on our previous visit the restaurant had been busy. One hopes this is not a downward spiral of diminishing clientele leading to diminished cuisine leading to further diminution of clientele.

By contrast we were welcomed to breakfast by the manager who showed us to a table and explained how the self service breakfast worked. The bread and pastries on offer were fresh. The coffee from the machine was not great but there was another machine on the bar which produced a good expresso. We have mixed feelings. The hotel remains a convenient stopover place but is some distance from restaurants in town. We hope improvements can be made.

I paid €40 for the night, for that you don't expect swimming pools etc! Great stop over to break journey! Food is average, centre ville is a good 30 min walk, but buses are frequent, good restaraunts can be found on the sea front

This isn't the most expensive or classy hotel, but for a quick trip to Calais, it's just the job. We've stayed here before and have never had any complaints. Friendly staff who can speak perfect English but are more than happy to let us practise our abysmal French on them!
The rooms are clean and although a little on the small side, they are big enough and functional. Beds are comfortable and tea making facilities provided. We hadn't specified that a member of our group was a frail elderly woman, but the receptionist, on her own initiative, did a quick room swap which enabled this lady to be accommodated on the ground floor (there is no elevator). You can't beat service like that, can you?
All in all, a great hotel to spend a night or two in if you are popping to Cite Europe or the wine warehouses.
Would definitely recommend the Cottage Hotel, Calais.

Still find this to be the best of the budget hotels in Calais for bed comfort and cleanliness

Only disappointment was restaurant and bar was closed New Year's Eve

Staff always willing to go that little bit extra, so a root in the boot of the car for a bottle of wine they supplied corkscrew and glasses.

Hotel prices in off season are very reasonable, but a bit expensive for what you get in high summer

We stayed at the Cottage Hotel on the 2nd January with our dog . Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room and bedding very clean and large enough for our needs. It also had English TV in your room. There was also restaurant and bar in the hotel.Breakfast was extra but well worth having as it saved you having to stop somewhere later for your breakfast.
