“Hotel Metropol”
Reviewed 4 March 2012

I first stayed in this hotel 6 years ago when I was touring around France, at that time it was the first hotel that I called that day with a suitable room in a convenient area.

So when I was in the area again last year I went back, its been polished up a bit - some may say its lost wee bit of charcter and I noticed another reviewer saying they expected someone from allo allo to appear - you should have went a few years back !

Seriously though this hotel is great value and in a perfect position and I have met lots of people that use this place every year, almost all the staff are multi lingual although they do like guests to try and speak a little bit of francais. Safe especially if you are on route somewhere with a car load of things as they have their own garage, small daily charge around 10 or 11 euros per day to leave your car in this and gives good peace of mind.

Rooms are not terribly modern but they are clean, comfortable and have everything that you will need, a variety of options as well from single through to various family rooms. Food was good and snacks and drinks available all day - I have noticed as well that some UK based tour companies appear to use this place so do not be surprised to see crowds of Brits at the bar and then dissapearing first thing in the morning.

Location wise its handy for shopping in Calais, not far from the City Hall and also the local train station, some nice walks along the rivers and a short walk from the harbour area or resistance square - A few minutes in a taxi from ferry terminal and short drive to most of huge shopping malls or smaller hypermarkets.

Room Tip: Never had a bad one.

We have been staying here 2/3 times a year for over 5 years and have never had cause to complain. The rooms and bathrooms have been comfortable and clean. The staff have been friendly helpful and competant. We do not understand some of the other reviewers comments about the breakfast provided - it has always been a typical comprehensive continental buffet
but an english style (bacon and eggs) will be provided as well if required. I suspect you wont get baked beans and black pudding but who on earth expects such things in foreign country?

The Metropol in in a building from 1926 and while an older hotel, it was clean and well decorated throughout. It was a great value that included breakfast and free wifi. There is garaged parking for a small fee. In a nice location, I would definitely stay here again!

Stayed in hotel on quickie to France.
Expected cast of Allo allo to appear. Full size snooker table in dining room left room short of space for breakfast tables.
Rooms very 1970's and corridor lights only turn on when movement in corridors but took some time to come on!
Breakfast continental only but OK. Tea not strong enough to get out of the tea pot.
Reduce your expectations and you will not be disappointed.

We stayed in this hotel on 25th September 2011 on our way back from a holiday in Italy. It was an absolute disgrace. The room stank of urine, the plaster on the wall was cracked, the bathroom was filthy and the toilet was in such a position that a tall man,i.e me, had to sit sideways on it! I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy and can't even give it a one rating,it was that bad.

Room Tip: Just don't, find another hotel.

Stayed here for 1 night before returning back to England after our holiday. Basic room, grubby mattress, uncomfortable pillows. It wasn't terrible but is was not worth the 74 euros per room. The bar area was OK for a drink in the evening, didn't take up breakfast at 11 euros when you get one at better hotels or patisseries for a lot less. It did the job for one night but I wouldn't go again.

We stayed one night in July, 2011. Calais has two train stations, Gare SNCF and Gare routiere. The Metropol is a five minute walk from Gare SNCF. The hotel is located about a ten minute walk from City Hall, a beautiful square and a park with a World War II Museum . If you are getting off the ferry from England, you will need to take a taxi to the Metropol. The Metropol is decorated in a decided British style being so close to England via ferry or Chunnel. Although the rooms are pretty standard, the lobby, bar and breakfast room are richly decorated. Speaking of breakfast, the eggs, ham, baguettes, juices, cheeses, fruit and yogurt were delicious. The price was fair and we loved Calais with its many floral displays. We would stay there again.

Room Tip: Calais is a city rich in history.
