We chose the hotel based on tripadvisor reviews and were not disappointed; the "Toile de Jouy" room was charmingly decorated, spotlessly clean with a perfectly adequate shower room, a comfy bed and a lovely little balcony overlooking the park. The continental breakfast is simple but tasty. We booked online (very efficient communication with the owner) paid 45 euro for the night and found it extremely good value for money.
The location is also pretty good, quiet side street within walking distance of many restaurants, bars and seafront.
All in all a great alternative to bland, impersonnal chain hotels in the same price range.

Room Tip: Room on the (quiet) street side overlooks a nice little park.

We used to stay here in the 1990's before it went down hill. We were encouraged to stay again because of the favourable reviews. We were disappointed. Yes, the owner was friendly, the room was clean and it was cheap for its location. However, it remains scruffy and a hand held shower with no screen/curtain is not my idea of refurbishment. Unless you want to be walking distance of the better Calais restaurants, the Etap at the tunnel compex easily beats this.

Stayed here for a night for a booze/food cruise. Benoit , the proprietor is very welcoming and knowledgeable about good places to eat etc. The rooms are comfortable, beds cosy with extra pillows available. Breakfast was French (bien sur!) with buttery croissants and good bread, good jams, yoghurts etc. The hotel is being renovated by the owner himself and it is clear that it's done with care and attention to detail. The landings are a bit battered, but we didn't really care as the room was perfect for our needs and everywhere was spotlessly clean. Looking forward to planning another hop over the channel for the next visit here.

We have stopped over in Calais many times to catch the ferry the next day and this time we decided to give the Hotel Richelieu a go after seeing the good reviews. We were certainly not disappointed. The owner is as charming as the hotel and he has clearly invested a lot of effort into the refurbishment of this small hotel. The room was clean, bright and done out in a traditional french style, and with a good modern bathroom. The only downside for some may be the lack of a lift but as we had just been walking in the Alps for a week, the stairs were not a problem for us! Great location just off the main street so easy walking distance for dining out, etc but also quiet. We thought the Richelieu was very good value with a lovely host and will be back.

My husband and friends stayed here overnight on our way to Normandy. My husband and I thought the place was fine. The room was old and a little run down but it was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was a normal French breakfast of various breads (which were really good!).

On a positive note, we didn't get to Calais until nearly 11:30 in the evening. The owner waited up for us. I don't know if many other hotels/B&Bs would have done the same.

We will likely stay there again the next time we have a ferry to catch.

Like most travelers to Calais, I only stayed for one night before taking the ferry. Hotel Richelieu was a very nice place to stay for the night and seemed like a good value.

I stayed on the top floor, which was undergoing renovations in the hall area, but this wasn't a problem at all. The room itself was nicely decorating with antique furniture and wallpaper. Nothing unusual like others have commented on. The bathroom appeared to be recently renovated and was very clean. It had a huge clawfoot tub, but no shower, although the tub had a showerhead-type attachment. My only complaint was that the windows had no curtains or shades.

The owner/operator was friendly and provided helpful recommendations for getting around town and finding a place to eat.

We stayed in this hotel as a stopover on a charity cycle ride from London to Bruges.

The hotel is undergoing a lot of redecoration currently, but is still perfectly usable. The bathroom in my room was new, but the rest of the room was awaiting modernising. It was however clean and tidy.

My friends, who were on the floor below, actually had a leopard print carpet in their room. They were quite taken with it in fact.

The price of the room was very reasonable in comparison to others in the area. It was also handily placed near the centre of town.

The owner was incredibly helpful. We had 16 bikes with us, which he let us keep in the restaurant to keep them secure. He also found us a restaurant for the evening and booked it.

All in all great service and very resonable. I'd certainly go back if i happen to need to stay in Calais again
