“French Fine Dining”
Reviewed 13 December 2013 via mobile

There's a lot I love and hate about French cuisine and it's all here. Fabulous quality local ingredients cooked beautifully. Wild boar, local goats cheeses, fantastic wines and then on the down side, those tiny pre-starters and in-between course nibbles that are unnecessary, slimy and foaming. The whole La Gourmandine experience is fantastic but I can't give it five stars as it's just not entirely right for me. I don't understand why they take the wine away and keep it on a table across the room until the waiter (he's part-owner, Maitre'D, super-pro restauranteur and thoroughly good chap in reality) deems that you are ready for another dribble of France's finest. Monday nights are a bistro menu and very different from the rest of the week. It's quirky, they have fantastic ingredients, the full fine dining experience and the building is enchanting. My 4-stars is more like a 4.5 in reality - I'm being a very harsh reviewer giving a 4.

“Excellent Monday dinner”
Reviewed 20 September 2012

Trying to find a good restaurant on a Monday can be difficult, but advised La Gourmandine did a good basic menu on a Monday, we found far more than expected. The food was superb, reasonably priced and service attentive but not excessive.

“It's a good restaurant with a beautiful interior.”
Reviewed 11 June 2012

I don't understand some of the critiques (the negative ones that is)that other people have written at all. The interior is gorgeous 'deco nulle' 'pseudo marocaine' must need their eyes testing!
We have been going to this restaurant since it opened and I would say it has improved. Yes we can't go that often as it is fairly expensive but always a treat when we do go. But now they have a 'bistro' menu which is good value for money and you eat your meal in wonderful surroundings.
The staff last time we went with visiting family were very friendly and one of the chefs took photos of us all. We are real foodies and find it hard to find good places to eat, but would always recommend this one to our B&B guests that stay with us.
Every restaurant bumps up the price of a bottle of wine, everyone knows that, but we thought the local wines to be reasonably priced.
Unless you have had a really bad experience don't bother to write negative info that simply was not to your liking on the day. Or find a restaurant that suits your pocket.
P.S. loved the dog.

“great ambience great food”
Reviewed 27 August 2010

We were wandering around Chatellerault wondering why a French town didn't sem to have any restaurants when we stumbled across La Gourmandine hotel / restaurant and gratefully dived in. It was more expensive than we had been looking for at a minimum menu of 39 Euros , but the food was fantastic. We ate outside in a garden surrounded by huge Oleanders in pots and other exotic flowers under a delightful variety of awnings and lights and had a fantastic evening.
