nice to be apart of history. enjoyable visit to a reconstruction of rigged ship. there are people quietly sitting around preparing wood, sewing sails, preparing rope and banging on metal.

We saw this rebuild of a sailing boat many years ago in its infancy. It is now near completion and we were amazed at the workmanship (done as it would have been - wood steamed to shape and sails and ropes made) It is the largest replica of
a traditional full- rigged ship ever built in France. It is 66 metres long. with a mainmast towering at over 47 metres, the equivalent of a 16 storey building. Assembly work on the vessel has taken longer than expected but this is a 'must see' in its final preparations and crew training for seaworthiness before setting sail in 2015 for America.
Very good exposition with some English translation (or a guide) and a beautiful boat which you can go on and see the sails towering above you.

French are building a replica of the ship Lafayette sent to aid the rebels (us) in the American Revolution. An amazing feat of building an 18th Century ship in the 21st Century. The Hermione will sail to the U.S. East Coast in 2015 and make stops at major ports.

We visited several years ago to see the wooded hull in the dry dock and were determined to see the completed ship before it was moved for sea trials later on in 2014. It is a full size replica of original ship built as near as possible with original materials and traditional methods. There is an exhibition area to visit showing the various workshops before visiting the ship itself which is nearly complete. You can go on the main deck and, if booked in advance (essential) , there is a tour of the lower decks. It will sail to the USA early 2015 and return to Rochefort later. We timed our visit to visit the market also (Thursday) and there is a large free car park with only a short walk to the dock area.

The French have take about 15 years to bring this project to completion as the build a replica of the 18th century Hermione. Ironically the masts that will pass under the Transbordeur on the river Charente are to high to go under the modern road bridge. So as it leaves for the US soon the topmost mast fittings have to be temporarily removed. Maybe someone can find out if this was an oversight more expected on the British than the French.
