“Incredible Experience!”
Reviewed 17 September 2013

My fiancée and I recently traveled around the South of France and were told by a friend to stay at Chateau de Cassis. One of the best travel tips we've ever gotten!

The Chateau is up in the hills overlooking the beach, town and marina of Cassis -- a quiet and unpretentious vacation town in the Côte d'Azur. Many people might overlook this town for more well known tourist destinations like St. Tropez, Monaco or Cannes. However, the scenery, ambiance and vibe of the town is one of the best I've ever visited in Europe.

The Chateau has the most incredible 360 degree views of the town. Vineyards along the hills on one side, and the most blue/green water I've ever seen along the coastline when you look in the other direction. The Chateau is run like an upscale Bed & Breakfast by Bernadette, who was extremely nice and helpful. A great French breakfast is served on the terrace each day.

Our room, I believe the Baptiste suite was perfect -- which a very large living room/den, large bedroom, updated amenities, Wi-Fi, etc. The views from the room are amazing. I believe the chateau only has 6 or 7 guest rooms in the entire compound, and while we were visiting only one or two rooms had guests -- so it felt as if we had a $50 million villa all to ourselves for the trip. The pool is perfect and a great way to just relax after spending the day at the beach.

My only hesitation to write this review is the fear that the secret about Chateau de Cassis will ever get out and will become too popular -- as we hope to be able to have the same experience when we visit here many times in the future.

This is a spellbindingly beatifully located historic castle above Cassis which has been converted into a hotel. The two bedroom suite has a fantastic balcony with an eagle eyed view of the harbour of Cassis. The restaurant for breakfast has an equally wonderful view. Lovely pool.

The idiosyncracy is that one's greeted by the gardener in a scruffy t-shirt and you don't really see any other staff, as explained in many other reviews. But forget that; go for one night without expecting 5 star service with a smile and you won't be disappointed

Room Tip: The 2 bedroom suite is great.

It was with a bit of trepidation that I booked the chateau due to the adverse comments on Tripadvisor. I booked it for some friends of mine who absolutely loved and then I stayed a week later. I stayed in the suite with 2 bedrooms and the most incredible view over the private terrace taking in the whole of Cassis. The staff were excellent, very friendly and completely professional.
This isn't exactly run like a hotel, more like a b and b so don't expect help with luggage etc or room service. It's all very casual and you more or less have the run of the place to yourselves, which definitely adds to the attraction. It's a huge place with nooks and crannies everywhere, a fabulous swimming pool and of course views to die for. It's quite special when down in the port for dinner looking up at your very own floodlit castle on the hill.
One tip - be careful if you are driving in a large car or 8 or 9 seater mini van as the access road is TINY.

Room Tip: If you are sharing then try for the suite with it's own private terrace - spectacular

My wife and I stayed the last day of our two week - Discover France- trip in this marvellous place.the stay in the junior suite room was splended, obviously expected for €590 /night.
Walking down the hill for dinner in Cassis was no objection, but getting up with full stomach was a little less convenient.

The very plus point op this chateau is the the fact that one is left alone with breathtaking views to dream away.

We can recommend this place if money is no issue

Room Tip: Junior suite looking down on Cassis

The only thing that Chateau de Cassis has going for them is the amazing view and proximity to the port. Unfortunately they charge you a hefty price for that. First of all, dont expect any help with your luggage upon arrival. I stayed one night in their most expensive room thinking I get to enjoy my amazing private terrace with view. Not.. The main dining area has a glass walll that looks out on to the rooms terrace. The public terrace is an extention from the rooms terrace with a low, iron fence to separate the two. I even had another guest walk onto my terrace while I was sunbathing! Also, I was not able to lock the door between the terrace and room. There is a small mini bar in with your basic soda and water, though just one of each. When I requested more refreshments for the night I was told nobody could bring me any and that I would have to go to the kitchen myself. There was not even a phone in the room to contact the staff. The breakfast buffet looks like what you would find at a German middle class hotel; boring pastries (not delicious ones that France has to offer) a small selection of fruits and cold cuts. The decor of the room is very old and not comfortable, the tv especially could use an update (note, there was only one tv in the livingroom, not in the bedroom) The bed was horrible, it was small and the mattrass (which was way too soft) had a huge dent in the middle because it was so old. The bathroom is large but not that great looking and the shower barely worked. During the stay I did not once encounter staff to ask if everything was alright, service is pretty much non exsistant (My room did not even get cleaned during the stay). It is a shame, it is a great property that has so much potential. The owner obviously makes his money with new, curious customers and does not seem to care if his guests want to return. For the price I paid of 690 euros for one night I rather go to Messardiere in St Tropez or Eden Roc in Antibes.

This is a (i) grand project, (ii) executed by amateurs, who are (iii) greedy, and (iv) the opposite of welcoming and attentive.

(i) Grand project: Unique location high above Cassis harbour, built with a grand design idea in mind. The views from the different viewpoints are spectacular, the pool is well laid out, but this is where all good ends...

(ii) Executed by amateurs: Many areas of the chateau are not finished yet, or will never be finished. Barriers and chairs are rusty, unfinished flooring, lampshades and light bulbs are missing, no bath mats, mis-placed mirrors, bad finishing of wardrobes and air conditionings... the list is long. The standard of the specifications such as bathroom fittings and bedroom furniture are absolutely basic and far from luxury. Some of the rooms, such as in the Haut and Bas Donjon, are tiny and not built to a standard luxury travellers expect. If you want to be greeted by the host in bathing shorts, t-shirt and Crocs, this is the place to go!

(iii) Greedy: The prices are beyond exaggeration. If the host asks for EUR 380, it should actually be closer to EUR 190, if at all. And any price only justifies the location and views (sometimes through a bull-eye-sized window only), but not the interiors. You constantly get the feeling that you are somewhat disturbing the hosts in their own four walls, but they welcome your money... and rather a lot of your money.

(iv) Opposite of welcoming and attentive hosts: This is actually the most striking point of all. There is no bell at the gate If you want to get into the property, you have to use your phone to call the chateau to get the code to get in. The owner told us that she prefers not to have a bell as otherwise she would have to run to the gate too many times a day! You get shown to your room, but noone tells you when and where breakfast is taking place, what other services are available at the chateau, which sights to visit in Cassis, or which restaurants to go to. In addition, you won't get a good morning or a casual hello during the day. It is also striking that the staff's priority is to serve and help the owner and her baby. If you are sitting on the terrace waiting for a drink, the staff will first of all take care of the bag of the owner before serving the guests. One thing is for sure, the customer is not king at Chateau de Cassis.

All in all, a rather strange experience. Not to be recommended to anyone who expects a welcoming and luxurious stay.

The position of this 'hotel' is superb, and it has been beautifully restored. It has charm, romance, tranquility and exclusivity. The rooms and breakfast are fine, indeed better than that. But it is a place of huge contradictions and perhaps disappointments. Service is virtually non-existent: no drinks or snacks or lunch are available by the superb pool, or elsewhere. The sun sets on the chateau's glorious west facing terrace in the evening- but the terrace is locked at 7pm!

The chateau is a huge missed opportunity. One is left with the strong impression that the owners care hugely for the place, but rather less for the people who come and stay.
