L'Estelle en Camargue

The Hotel l'Estelle was a gem. We found it on the web and think the web site gives a very accurate idea of what it is like, though it doesn't do the hotel justice in terms of how beautiul it is. The location was perfect, just a few kilometres from Les Saintes Maries de la Mer so going into town, out for dinner, etc. was very easy. It's also near several horseback riding places and it's quite easy to head out to explore other towns such as Aigues Mortes. The rooms are very nice with views of a small lake, but the pool area is the best part, complete with a lovely jacuzzi on the edge of the lake. There are lovely breezes and we were tempted to stay for lunch on the patio (breakfasts there are wonderful), but were too excited to explore the area. The best part of the hotel is the staff, particularly in helping to make suggestions about what to do. We did everything based on their ideas and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. After being out all day and feeling full from all our lovely meals, we really loved having such a beautiful, comfortable, relaxing haven to return to.

We stayed six nights at Estelle in a room with view on the marsh and we were not disappointed. You get Swiss quality of room service, which means for instance that in the evening while you are out for dinner a rug will be laid on the floor next to your bed, the pyjama will be prepared for you and the light by the bed side will be switched on. The room was spacious and had a separate toilett. There was plenty of storage room. We appreciated the stereo, as we had many CDs with us.

The view from the swimming pool and bar/breakfast area over the marsh is stunning. The dinner is usually taken indoors next to the pool, mostly because of the mosquitos. Equally it would be hard to perform the ritual required in a fine restaurant while the waiters are sweating in their black suits. Luckily we did not take the half-board option, as it would have meant having high cuisine multiple course menus every evening. The chef is extremely good, the waiters OK. We dined out four evenings out of six.

There was not one thing that we could complain about. Yet I only gave four stars. I took my wife and I some time to realise that the problem was the atmosphere. Apart from the view there is little Camargue-specific at the Estelle. Everything was almost too perfect. The room although very comfortable lacked personality. It was good that we had all the service that we are used to from home. There were also many Swiss guests. However when you go on holiday you are looking for something different. Southern France is all about being relaxed and not caring much of conventions, so you do not want to see anything stiff.

I will definitely return to Camargue, as it is such a wonderful region and so convenient for us to drive. I know that I am just being fussy, but I will probably try other hotels before going back to Estelle.

We stayed at this hotel for the first time for 8 nights in September 2008. The hotel offers a friendly first rate service, and like most of the previous reviewers, we could not fault it. In fact I would describe it as one of the most relaxing holidays we've had with our eight year old. The rooms are a good size, immaculately clean, and were serviced every day. All rooms had a can of "drop dead" mosquito spray in the cupboard, and mosquito nets on the patio windows (essential). There is a small "infinity" swimming pool overlooking a lake, which was adequate, enjoyed by the kids and adults alike, and promoted a friendly atmosphere amongst the guests. It is a telling sign that many of the guests that were staying there go back every year and so know each other. The highlights for us were the fabulous local wildlife including daily flypasts of hundreds of flamingos in "V" formation, the restaurant which was first class, and the relaxing atmosphere. It is relatively expensive, but you certainly get good value. PS. there are lots of places within an hour drive to take the kids - horse riding, the beach (10 mins), aquatic centres ...

We stayed here for two nights and were delighted to get a free up grade to a room overlooking the garden. The view was amazing - very peaceful and relaxing. Everything about the hotel is lovely and the restaurant is excellent. It is expensive but a real treat.

We stayed at this hotel havin read some reviews and then phoned the hotel whilst in France . It was very peaceful, excellent food, and the staff very helpful about other activities. I went horse-riding at a recommended stable. The rooms are wonderful - I cannot fault them . The bath room was large and cool and luxurious.

I stopped here fo a weekend in October this year and found it delightful. All the rooms are ground floor looking onto the pool or the étang. My room was reasonably large without being vast. there was a good sized bed and everything was spotless. The room had a small private patio outside with a table and two comfortable chairs and two loungers, all looking out over the reed fringed lagoon. The bathroom was first class. The hotel is half a mile or so outside the town and is in a good position for walking, riding etc.
A good buffet breakfast was included in the price of the room. I ate there both evenings and the food was excellent. On the Sunday evening there was a large private party but I was impressed how much care the staff took to ensure that the ordinary guests did not feel neglected. I am looking forward to going there again.
