“Part of the mosaic that is historic Vaison”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

In the south of France there are many cathedrals and abbey churches of more architectural distinction than that of Notre-Dame de Nazareth in Vaison. That said, the severe Romanesque structure with the more refined cloisters that lead off it are well worth visiting if you are in the town for other reasons.

Sitting quietly and having got used to the sombre lighting after the intense Provençal sunshine outside, I could appreciate the fine proportions of building and it was the simplicity of the design that gave the building its charm and sense of peace.

With its ancient foundations and prominent position in the townscape you should definitely include the cathedral when in Vaison. It is an important part of the whole mosaic.

“Pretty cloister”
Reviewed 4 September 2013

The architecture of the church is primarily severe Romanesque, but the cloister is pretty. The church is in the main part of town below the medieval city.

“Well preserved site”
Reviewed 15 June 2013

You can get a good idea of the layout of a roman town by visiting this split site. The theatre has been seriously renovated over the last few years. Work is going on elsewhere in the town on the Forum, which you can watch for viewing windows. The museum is informative and well laid out but I'm not sure if all the finds from the site are kept here. This is apparently the largest roman site in France. Definitely worth a visit.

“Wonderful architectural site”
Reviewed 18 May 2013 via mobile

This church is the high point of a visit to Vaison la Romaine in my opinion.
Although the impression for visitors is this site lacks the pedigree of the Roman ruins, it only takes some time and contemplation to appreciate the wonderful structure in such a peaceful setting.
I applaud the restoration efforts, and the resulting grace the church exhibits. Well worth the effort to see - just don't rush.

A perfect example of the blending of Romanesque architecture infused with the flavor of Provence, this cathedral is a must see.
