“Fantastic family skiing holiday”
Reviewed 28 February 2012

Esprit really do cater for families. The childcare is fantastic, the staff are very proactive, they don't just sit there watching while your child amuses themselves, they really get involved by playing games, singing songs, taking them sledging, making stuff with them, the list goes on! They had great energy and enthusiasm, and our two children (aged 5yrs and 8yrs) who usually never want to go into any kind of "kids clubs" on holidays, could not get enough of the snow club and cocoa club. Another good thing about going with Esprit is that the children ski with the other English children from the same chalet hotel and also an Esprit rep skis with them. We have skied with Crystal Ski before and our daughter was stuck in ski school with a load of French kids she'd never met before and couldnt talk to plus a French instructor of course, and she hated it. Her experience this time could not have been more different. She loved it, as essentially she was skiing with all her friends from the chalet hotel. Although Crystal offer good skiing holidays, their childcare does not compare to that of Esprit. I also liked the presentation ceremony of the badges by the ESF ski tutors at the end of the week. Although the hotel needs a refurb, it is certainly clean and adequate for what you need, and the food is good. The main bar area is quite large and was a good social area to relax in and chat to other guests. However, the best thing about the holiday was the staff. I cannot praise them all enough, and they were so accommodating to any request that we had. The manager, Ruth, was fantastic, as was Anna Banana (!) the primary childcare rep. I can highly recommend Esprit for a family skiing holiday. Thank you all, from the Allonby family x

We stayed at the Esprit run Hotel Mariandre in Alpe d'Huez for two weeks in July. The hotel is in a great position in the lower older part of the resort. Our room was more than adequate but the staff were absolutely outstanding. The childcare staff looked after our two daughters ( 20 months and four) brilliantly, the managers and activity staff met our every need, the hotel assistants worked very hard and kept everything superbly clean and tidy, and the kitchen staff...Wow. Incredible meals every night! Everyone was exceptionally friendly, efficient and professional. We will definitely be going back. Thank you Esprit.

What makes this Chalet Hotel worth a visit is the fantastic Esprit team. They are so organized and knowledgeable. From the moment we landed Ali, our resort rep greeted us with enthusiasm and a big smile. She was very helpful during the week answering our queries and was always available if we needed her. The manager, Chloe is brilliant, she seems to be everywhere and helping everyone! We did have some minor problems with our room but she sorted these out quickly. The child care team, under the guidance of A J was amazing, they are young but the children all seem to love them. and they work extremely hard. Although we didnt travel with our children we observed all the fun they were having. I agree with some of the other reviews that this Hotel is a bit tired looking but it was clean and the staff work hard to keep it up to a high standard. I definately feel that the food exceeded the 3 diamond rating given. The variety of food offered and the wine was excellent. The Hotel is in an excellent location, everything you need is nearby and we had no problem with noise from the resort (maybe because its coming to the end of the season). All in all a lovely holiday if the Hotel had a bit of a facelift it would be brilliant.

We stayed here with 11 year old and 5 year old and made use of ski lessons and snow club for 5 year old. Both were unsure about going but we were positive and proved right as we couldn't get them away from the staff and activities as they loved it so much. Yes other reviews are right it's not 5 star but the room layouts are great for families - although not interconnected if you follow the chalet living ethos it's no problem. The staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble and there was always somebody around to help at any time. The food was brilliant and better than a pure chalet as you have dedicated chef's.

Despite lack of snow and wall-to-wall sunshine the resort staff kept the snow in good condition and we could ski most runs all week. The sunshine made learning easier for our 5 year old as she didn't get cold. Its our 2nd time to Alpe and it is fantastic for learners with its large green bowl and those who prefer steep can go off the top for thrills.

The resort can be noisy at night, it was less of a problem at the Mariandre but still noticeable. It still amazes me why the resorts allow these revellers to roam the streets at 4.00 in the morning - but put your earplugs in and all's fine.

Would I go back - maybe not after 2 years but that is not a reflection on Esprit or the resort just felt like we have now done most of the mountain and need to try somewhere else.

Tips - the 'secret chair' is 100m from the hotel - use it to get to the top of signal before the crowds and the skiing is superb.

If you expect the full on five-star hotel experience this is not for you... That's not what th chalet-hotel concept is about. But this team, headed by an excellent manager and with irrepressible enthusiasm, have created a great atmosphere for a family skiing holiday.
Any occasional niggles were sorted quickly by the really simple (but so often underused by your average Brit) idea of asking the team...

Ive never quite got on with the idea of having to choose dinner at breakfast time, but, again, its part of the Esprit-chalet hotel deal and th quality of the food was excellent, with good accompanying wines, and friendly high quality, but informal, service.
The Childcare was professional, friendly, and fun. The kids loved every moment of it; the link with ESF worked really well and the instructors clearly have a good relationship with the hotel and Childcare teams.
We did go on the Hosted/guided trip - a great way to get to know the resort quickly and hugely entertaining.
ChaletHotels are not meant to be posh and perfect, but sociable and fun with a family ski trip made as easy as it is possible for them to be. We've done 6 or 7 of these now, and whilst this hotel was not the most luxurious (we had standard rooms having booked too late for one of the rather nicer suites) it was the most fun!

Alpe D'uez is a great skiing resort for a all rounder skier /snowboarder from the most green runs I have seen to the longest black run there is ( I think ) It is a big resort with lots of places to see ,now the hotel ,,got well and truly ripped off by Esprit and would never go with them again !! got charged extra by £80 because they said because their is only 3 of us (me ,wife and 7yr old son ) i would HAVE to have to rooms because their are only 2 beds in each room and find out ,yes you guess it !! ,the first room we went in had 4 beds in it so never went in the second room, found out this is a commom practice with them to get more money out of you as other people their had the same done to them ,go with cristal if you can they are great !! hotel was okay ,food at 3pm ish was stale bread and chesse with sometimes a bit of cake if you got their in time as their was never enough . Now the lessons ,my son went skiing with ESP for the morning s 8-45am till 12 and they were great and he loved it !! My wife went to ski-school aswell and she got on great to ,I thought while they have gone in school I might as well so i paid £130 to go to snowboard school only to when I get their be told that they dont do it in the mornings so cant do it as I wanted to see my family in the afternoon ,no help and no refund ! so in short ,,,great resort ,,esp great ,,,espirit Never ,Never again !!!
