Pierre & Vacances Residence Les Bergers
Ranked #18 of 31 Hotels in L'Alpe-d'Huez
Reviewed 28 December 2013

We are quite happy with our stay at Residence Les Bergers. The hotel looked clean and nice, the rooms recently renovated with well equipped kitchen and good bathrooms. The beds, blankets, pillows were OK. Only remark - every bed should have a separate reading lamp. We liked the attitude of the staff, who were invariably friendy, helpful and relaxed. The heated outdoor pool was a good extra. There was a comfortable lounge with a fireplace and a snooker table. The kids liked the hotel, especially the meeting with Santa on Christmas Eve. The location is almost perfect, not exactly ski-in, but a very short walk from the lifts. All the other parts of the resort were easily accessible. The commercial centre near the residence is a real asset, providing everything you need - good supermarket, ski rental, boulangerie, medical centre, drugstore etc.
Some things can be improved. The soundproofing level of the apartment doors was zero. As the main sleeping area was near the door, sleep could be easily disturbed by noises from the corridor and other rooms. Some staff members made considerable noise, removing rubbish, empty bottles etc from the utility rooms in the corridor regularly at 7 am in the morning, which seemed supid. Ski lockers were sufficient for two users, but definitely not for more.
As some others have complained, the wifi did not function well. Even the basic option was adequate for browsing, Skype etc. But wifi was cut off very often, sometimes every couple of minutes. It seemed to be more of a software problem, not primarily an issue of signal strength or capacity. Most of the time the computer was "obtaining address". Very often "page unavailable" was displayed, or a similar message from a strange "wifi controller". The absurdly inconsistent quality of wifi (which came for a charge) is the main serious issue we had. Overall, I would consider returning if I had another vacation at Alpe d'Huez and if I could get the room for same price. I am not sure I would be prepared to pay higher prices (as charged during New Year and school holidays). The management should address the weaknesses - soundproofing of doors, wifi quality and individual lightning in rooms - to confirm their full commitment to customers.

Dear client,

Thank you for taking time to share your recommendations and address us some highly constructive comments about the residence. We are glad to hear that you appreciated the overall stay in our residence Les Bergers and we are sorry about the inconveniences you had during your stay.

Indeed, we finished refurbishing the last apartments in 2012. We took, however, notice of your remark concerning the apartment's equipment.

Reading that you felt well accompanied by our staff during your stay is highly appreciated by the entire team, who will continue their great efforts.

However, we apologize for the inconvenience produced by our house keeping and wish to ensure you that we are aiming to continuously improve our services in order to certify the comfort of our customers.

Conscient of our ski lockers being slightly small, we exceptionally authorise our clients to take their skiing equipment with them in their apartments.

As for the wifi connections, should we have known that you encountered some difficulties to connect during your stay, we would have immediately contacted our business partner to try to find a suitable solution. Either how, we took notice of your remark and we will do our utmost to improve the connections in the apartments.

We are very pleased that you liked your stay and would be happy to welcome you again.

Best regards,

Rémy ZACCARINI
Manager Pierre et Vacances and Maeva’s residence from l’Alpe d’Huez & all the entire team

From our side of the building their was a very nice view to the stream - and the sound of water rushing by very nice.
An average resort - with nice and friendly staff.
We arrived early, and they got our room ready at once.
Internet access was unstable and slow, although we paid €25 for the full package.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view to the stream.

Compared to the descriptions on the web the place was run Down with extremely small rooms fare away from the description on the web. To be honest it is over Price and not good value for Money, In a place that are considered as one of the top tour destination for bicyclist in the World i the summer, it would have been appropriated with basement for storage of the bikes, instead everybody where bringing their bikes to their rooms staining elevators, doors and furniture's every time.

The Hotel was full even if we paid in advance so we were put in a small room in the basement without cash compensation

We stayed at Alpe d'Huez in February 2013 and decided to be centrally located. When we go skiing we are the first on the slopes and last ones to be back in the hotel. That's why we decided to stay at Pierre & Vacances as we don't need a top place to stay; it just needs to be central, clean and should be equipped with a kitchenette; preferably also with a sauna and pool to relax a little bit in the evening.
This place unfortunately did not fulfill our quite basic needs. It is VERY run-down. Everywhere you look you can find worn-out areas. When you enter the building (I refer to the second one which is not connected to the main building, so you have to go out in the cold when you want to go for dinner) it stinks like hell as the rubbish place is just around the corner (what a great welcome!!!).
Also, even if the room was renovated, the trundle bed was so old and uncomfortable that my back hurted every morning. Especially great when you go all day long skiing!

You also can forget to relax in the sauna or go swimming in the pool.
The sauna is crowded with a zillion of people and the pool is cold!!! Who wants to go swimming in cold water in winter? You also can go showering in disinfectant back in the room as the "spa" - area is so extremely dirty. Disgusting! I never saw something like this before.

In conclusion:
Better find some friends and rent a chalet (the price difference won't be that much more when you share over what we paid at Pierre & Vacances - the cost-benefit ratio is insufficient) but avoid this place!

Ideal location for lifts only five minute walk. Same applies to shops and restaurants. Ten minute walk into main resort.
We found the accommodation to be clean tidy and well suited to our needs. We slept in the single beds in the alcove and our teenage son on the sofa bed. They are a little firm, but o.k. Kitchen well equipped. Bathroom modern and more importantly clean. Lovely views out to the mountains from the rear of the building.
Helpful reception staff.
Great skiing.

Room Tip: At the end of corridors. The higher up the better.
