“Great family hotel”
Reviewed 1 April 2013

We have just arrived back from a family ski trip to Alp d'Huez staying at the Grandes Rousses hotel. We have three children ranging from 3-8 yrs so finding suitable accommodation can be difficult. This hotel was good as it has duplex apps/rooms which have a large double room, bathroom with a bath and separate WC and then stairs up to a second large eves room which had three ingle beds. There is plenty of storage space too. The stairs are rather steep which may be problem for very young children.
The hotel is very close to the free lift which takes you to the slopes/ski school. The boot room is large with lots of space for skis, each room has its own designated ski rack, and heated boot rail.

There is a heated indoor pool, jacuzzi and sauna.
We had breakfast there which was fine, a buffet, and available from 7.30. We did not have dinner there as we preferred to go out, and the dinner seemed quite formal.

The staff are friendly and speak English. There are hardly any English there with the guests generally from France or Belgium.

I would recommend the hotel.

Room Tip: Duplex rooms good for families.

The hotel location is great, across from the public swimmingpool and walking distance to nearby shops and restaurants. The skilift is next to the hotel and when returning you'll be able to ski all the way up to the hotel, great!! Then the hotel it self, it is simple but you feel the positve vibe. The rooms are normal but the view is great due to the fact the hotel is situated on a hill. With the right room you can look al over Alpe d'Huez. The sauna in the hotel is small if you look at the amount of rooms there are but is okay. The thing that made our stay so nice was the people that worked in the hotel. Everybody from people behind the frontdesk, housekeeping and waiters in the restaurant did the extra step to make you feel welcome and made sure you enjoyed your holiday. If I return to Alpe d'huez I will go back to this hotel. GREAT!!

We had a duplex room for 4 adults which was in a tired condition compared to the hotel website.
The room was not prepared for 4 adults and we needed to request extra slippers and dressing gowns. The bathroom had a curtain instead of a door which was rather uncomfortable when sharing.
The spa facilities we very busy and the jacuzzi was cold. We tried to turn the heat up but nothing happened.
The breakfast is very good with a lovely view over the mountain. Don't have bar drinks... A coca cola in a glass cost 5Euros!!!
The location is excellent so you can get up the mountain very quickly.
Over 1200Euros for 3 nights was however extremely expensive for a less than 3* hotel in my opinion.

We checked in to the hotel for a ski vacation over the Christmas holidays. As per the title, the staff here were welcoming and helpful from the moment we pulled up to the front of the hotel. Located in the ski village in Alpes d'Huez, the hotel is right beside the mini-gondola that takes you to the main intersection of ski lifts for the mountain.

The family room is still small by North American standards but the two WCs and the extra room upstairs were excellent so that the kids could have their space away from the parents. The elevator is very European so don't expect to ride up as a family with your stuff. You'll have to take the stairs and meet someone with your luggage when you get there.

The hotel has a little work out room with some well maintained exercise machines and the ski locker is heated and downstairs close to the service entrance to the hotel, great for returning after a long day on the slopes.

The meal plan is an excellent value as breakfast and dinner are included. All you can eat buffet breakfast helps fuel up for the day and the dinner service is well catered by the friendly staff. Dinner hours are flexible (19h00 to 22h00) which was very much appreciated. The meal plan menu is limited but you can order off the regular menu for a small fee. Coke and coffe is not included in the meal plan which was a bit of a disappointment.

The hotel has a wine and cheese bar attached to it which is disgustingly expensive. You can lounge about the hotel entry in the plentiful couches surfing the Internet on your tablet, but if you choose to order a drink be prepared to pay more than 15 Euro for a small glass of wine. I don't mind paying when I'm on the ski hill but the bar in this hotel was outrageous.

All in all, an excellent place to stay, very friendly staff, and great food.

Dear Client,

We are more than happy to learn that your Season's Holidays at the Hotel Les Grandes Rousses were beyond your expectations.

Focus has been made on our Cuisine quality, that's the reason why we propose a daily menu in addition of some Chef's suggestions. As we are serving high quality fresh food only, we prefer to change our limited selection daily.

Regarding our Wine & Cheese Bar, our Wine Steward propose every day a broad selection of Grand Cru (eg. Pauillac, Margaux, Côte Rotie, Chablis 1er Cru, etc.) served at the glass (and even on the bottle) , which is allowed with our special equipment keeping our wines at the perfect temperature under a zero atmosphere.

The quality of our wine selection grants our customers to enjoy some rarities on the glass, so no need to purchase the full bottle !

Alongside this degustation, we also propose a top quality high cheese selection out of our partner who received numerous world class awards and have won the title of Meilleur Ouvrier Fromager de France.

This allow you to combine the best of the both worlds (Wine & Cheese !)

We will be delighted to accomodate you again in a non so distant future, and stay of course at your entire diposal for any further query.

Respectfully Yours

Philippe Carlens

We stopped at Les Grand Rousses for on enight in August, en route from Geneva to Provence. The resort of L'Alpe d'Huez is a tired relic of the seventies, and Les Grand Rousses is no exception, with outdated rooms and decor, particularly the bathrooms. Tired it may be, but dirty it is not, with the owners and staff clearly taking pride in cleanliness, so a major plus here. For this reason alone, I would probably stay here again if I was in the area.

We stayed at this hotel during the Marmotte cycling sportif the first weekend in July. We booked late and therefore paid a higher than average price however it is in a fabulous location and our room had a very large balcony with the most amazing view. The hotel team were all very friendly throughout our stay and extremely helpful. Breakfast was good with lots of fresh coffee and croissants. The hotel itself is looking a little tired around the edges and could do with a bit of TLC otherwise a good stay!

I had to make a last minute reservation when previously made plans fell through. This hotel had 1 room available due to a cancellation. It turned out to be a surprisingly perfect choice. The room was large and the cleaning staff was very efficient. The front desk personnel were very knowledgeable and spoke both English and French. The breakfast, included in the room price, was a bit meager (only one breakfast meat-ham, whereas other hotels had ham, salami and another sausage)and did not have any hard boiled eggs. Access to a "people mover" lift across the street transported user to base of ski lifts in five minutes made up for this. Hotel has clean indoor pool, sauna and jacuzzi as well as separate boot and ski room common to all French ski resorts. My room had a huge balcony - nice for sitting in the sun at the end of a day of skiing. Based on the geographic access and cleanliness of the room, I would stay there again.
