“Cramped out-dated rooms with mould in showers. Not child friendly”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 April 2010

We have been skiing for 7 years in France and Switzerland. This particular chalet hotel has to be the worst we have stayed in regarding quality of the accommodation. It is actually a 2-star establishment with very shabby cramped rooms often with extra beds squeezed for income generation. The chefs do change every season and I note that previous guests have had good meals. On this occasion, this was not the case with quite basic food which is fine if your group consists of young single people who really don't mind about the quality of food and are only interested in skiing but not so fine if you have a family. We were seated for the evening meal at 7.30 but never got our main course before 9pm which often meant that everyone was tired by the tired the evening meal was finished at about 10.30pm.

The washing facilities were something out of the 1970s with mouldy showers, asbestos ceiling tiles and unfortunately the smell of sewage on some days.

The boot room had 3 plastic garden chairs for 40 people to sit down on and put there ski boots on. The exercise room is essentially a exercise machine in the corner. The hot tub was actually very useable!

The location is on a ski slope which is good. BUT the main ski area is actually on the far side of town and is accessed by 'lobster pots' just down the slope. There was usually a queue just to get onto them and then a 10 minute journey on the lobster pots to reach the main ski area. You have to allow at least 30 minutes of travel to reach the ski school meeting point. There is no way of skiing there.

On a more worrying point. The chalet hotel would fail on fire and safety issues and these have been highlighted to Skiworld. The fire doors are so poorly fitted that are 6 inch gaps above them. Emergency fire lighting does not work. Emergency escape doors are left open enabling intruders easy unimpeded access. Staircase handrails are about to come off the walls posing a potential health and safety risk.

In summary, this is probably a good hotel for young single skiiers who don't mind lack of quality and who are decent skiiers who don't need to go to the ski school and don't mind 'roughing' it.

Just got back from a week's skiing with Skiworld with 5 friends and we had a fantastic time. The location is fantastic and so ski in/ski out that one of my friends accidentally skiing into the boot room. So no dreaded walking in ski boots or waiting for a cramped ski bus. Then a short ski to the two major ways of getting up the slopes. We were split into two rooms and the room of 4 was pretty cramped with not a lot of storage space - some coat hooks and a couple of mirrors near power sockets would have made a massive difference. However, this shouldn't take away from what is one of the best ski holidays I've ever had. The staff are all lovely, good fun and friendly coming up and saying hello when you see them out making you feel like you're welcome rather than just a guest. They make you feel very welcome. The food is absolutely delicious and yes there isn't a lot of choice but you don't need it as what you do get is lovely. The free wine with dinner is very drinkable and carafes are continually topped up until coffee. We used the hot tub and sauna and found it a nice way to relax after a day on the slopes. The whole set up is very sociable and we met lots of people. The delicious bread and homemade cake from 4.00-5.30pm was a great way to chat to other guests about their day. We got our deal through Skiline and got an excellent bargain. Based on my experience I would look to book with SkiWorld (the operator) again and would definitely recommend L'Escapade. Our room wasn't great but to be honest, we only slept in it and all the other many positive aspects more than made up for it!

We travelled for a week skiing on 2nd Jan, chalet is literally on the green run and even beginners shouldn't have a problem skiing right to the boot room door! Outside hot tub was lovely and refreshing after a days skiing. Food was great every day with a choice of meals every night. We heard others had problems with rooms but ours (room 9) was fine with plenty of room and storage. Staff were all really helpful and chatty, special mention for Chris behind the bar and his "trial" cocktails, favourite with our table was the "Piste Basher" I believe. Would go again (especially if we could book room 9).

Just back yesterday with after a week stay with SkiWorld.

Location is fantastic, and yes it is truelly a ski in and out chalet. As one of our party did that from the doorway one day last week, after a fantastic dump of snow.

Yes as with other reviews, rooms are a little small, though your only in them to sleep so no problem. The lounge/dining room/bar are large enough, even when we had total white out when most runs and lifts were shut and most guests stayed in. Bathrooms/Showers are good size and plenty of hot water and pressure. Ventilation maybe something that needs updating, though this does not effect on the chalet. Hot tub and Sauna was used everyday by the guests. Running machine in the gym was the only piece of equipment not working, though after a full days skiing who needs it hey.

Foooooooood..... well where do i start, fantastic, hot, tasty, varied, on time, loads of it, to the point that on the last night gala meal, we all put back on the weight that we had lost over the week. God it was good. 11 out of 10 to the chef's.

The chef's were not the only ones getting 11 out of 10, the resort rep, chalet manager, chalet staff and bar staff were all very friendly, cheerful, welcoming and would do anything to try and help.

Cheers guys for an excellent week. Shame it had to end.

I stayed in the 'Escapade for a week at the end of February and had an absolutely fantastic time.

While some of the rooms were a little small our room was good with a beautiful view from our balcony. The location of this chalet could not have been better, a short ski to the lifts from these you are then able to access both main lift hubs. Skiing back to the door at the end of the day was a massive convenience and a blessing for those with tired legs.

The food was not only delicious but always served hot and quickly, unlike mentioned in previous reviews. They were also willing to accommodate for any dietary request that we had.

The lack of living space downstairs was not an issue; there was still enough room for everyone to sit comfortably. We found that we only really used this area before dinner as we were out skiing during the day and out at night.

Overall I would highly recommend this chalet. The rooms may not be the most luxurious but it was good value for many and staff really helped to make to trip.

Our group's week at the chalet L'Escapade could not really have been much more fun. Even though the rooms are slightly tired - the bar, the food and the staff more than make up for it. Contrary to other reviews, the food was quick and there was a definite presence of after dinner chocolates. The bar is well-stocked and the happy hour a great idea. The lift system up to the main skiing area is ridiculously slow but quite a nice, gentle wake up call in the morning! Really good value for money and in a fab location, there aren't many negative points about this chalet.

Smelly and cramped !
19 of us just spent an excellent week in Alp D'Huez. Perfect snow, sunny days, and we had a great time.
Except when we got back to the Chalet L'Escapade.
Although it has great location, and offers a steam room, broken fitness room equipment and a hot tub, it is a very very cramped chalet. You will spend most of your time in the cramped and ( Toilet ) smelly dining room, as there are only a few soft chairs and a few small rooms for the guests to use otherwise.
Expect your food to take forever to arrive, and to be warm, not hot.
Bring signs to hang on the toilet doors, as there are no locks.
The choice of evening meal is just the vegetarian option.
Dont expect after dinner chocolates.
Some of the room are that small, you wont be able to use the toilet and walk about.
And at least three rooms are almost inhabitable as the exit pipe from the boiler is just the other side of one of the walls, which will be too hot to touch.
And worst of all, Skiworld know about all this, and are chosing NOT to do anything about it
