“Another great Shearings holiday at the Alpen Roc!”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

Just returned from a wonderful holiday in La Clusaz with Shearings! The extended dining room is excellent as is the food, you never leave it hungry! The staff were very helpful and if some previous reviewers had ready the hotel guide in their room they too could have requested a kettle for their room as we did. The room was perfectly suited for a holiday where you spend very little time in it - very comfortable, clean and a lovely refurbished bathroom with plenty of hot water and towels. Once again our excellent driver, David Burgess made the holiday extra special with his historical knowledge of the area and his sense of humour!! We are already planning our return trip next year Carole and Barry

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the front or the side with a balcony for the views you'll love!

Ok, cheesy title but myself and my 2 sons were pretty impressed by this 3 star, essentially ski lodge. We have just returned from the long bank holiday weekend after doing the
Alpine Challenge via the Events firm 7sense.
The hotel is smack bang in the centre of town. It's warm and cozy although the weather over the weekend was relatively warm anyway. Never actually ate at the hotel apart from continental breakfast which was what you'd expect.
The rooms, well the ones we had, were roomy enough. TV, comfy beds and ensuite bathrooms. One of the rooms had a balcony which afforded brilliant views of the mountains. Friendly reception staff who were most helpful re directions etc.
The bad points....remember this is a 3 star and does pretend to be anything else. We stayed on the 8th floor which was a bit of a hassle to get to. 2 elevators and then a flight of stairs. Hall carpet looked like it needed replacing particularly at the end of the hall where there is a big stain whick looks like someone may have been sick there quite some time ago and no end of cleaning manged to shift the appearence that that was the case.
There is a pool, sanua and jacuzzi in the basement. There is also a shower room. Unfortunately the shower cable is broken so water sprays all over the gaff and is therefore a bit useless.
Grumpy waiter staff, let me clarify this by saying there was one individual grumpy waiter this morning. Not all laid tables had coffee cups. No sooner had I taken one from a laid table to get some coffee than an older gentleman waiter relieved me of it, putting it back from where I picked it up. He did bring another cup from elsewhere but failed to utter a word (French or English would have been fine). He obviously needs to go on a hospitality course and discover that manners cost nothing. Apologies for banging on about this but I was genuinely quite shocked and it kind of pissed me off particularly as all the other staff were so pleasant and friendly
All in all it's a great place to stay. All very woody and alpine.
La Clusaz itself it a very pretty town with lots of bars and restaurants. Never been to a ski resort during summer but the place was pretty alive in part due to the Bellier Run on the Sunday.

Room Tip: Go for one on the lower floors

Travelled for a month in France in Summer of 2014. This was by far the worst hotel we stayed in, regardless of price (This Best Western is quite overpriced given the room size and decor). Our first room (see photo) had multiple brown stains on the carpet. I would not take my shoes off in this room. The friendly staff person agreed and allowed us to switch rooms. The second had a newer carpet- much better. The bathroom however was a disaster. The shower "door" was far too short, so the bathroom floor was covered with water after a shower. The shower bath itself was very slippery. On successive days, both of my children actually slipped and fell while in the shower. The room itself was very small. A good location but at $255 Euros/night truly a terrible value.

Room Tip: Renovation in some rooms but not others- ask to see the room first if you must stay at this hotel

Hello,

We have taken note of your comments and are sorry not to have met your expectations.

In fact, our rooms are not very large (around 20 sqm), that’s often happens in the mountains. Regarding the shower bath, we inform you that the anti-slip mats are available to our guests at the reception. The carpets of the rooms are currently being changed. The complete renovation of our facility will be completed in late September 2014.

Best regards.

We have just returned from a fabulous week spent in la Clusaz.
We travelled with Shearings and our driver Dave Burgess made this trip extra special with his vast knowledge of the area and his caring attitude to ensure we all had a great time. Most of us collected free maps of the area from the local tourist information and Dave spent his own time in highlighting the whole weeks tour as well as other points of interest. Well beyond the call of duty and the best driver we have had on our numerous Shearings tours. Thanks Dave.
The hotel was very pleasant and the staff very friendly. The swimming pool was a bit small but it did have a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi.
The room was large with views of the mountains. The room did not have tea making facilities but these could be requested from reception. We recommend you take your own travel kettle as there was sometimes a wait for a kettle to become available.
The food was good with a good choice. We found the salads were fresh with a good selection. The sweet selection was exceptional with cheese and ice cream also available.
The scenery on this trip was stunning and golden eagles a regular attraction. We have recommended this trip with Shearings to our friends.

Room Tip: Most rooms have a good view of the mountains

Excellent location, every thing else was adequate. Poor choice of veg and salad with evening meals, they appeared to just mix random ingredients together in various bowls, also every desert had crushed pistachio nuts thrown over it, chef obviously thought everything needed a touch of green. Rooms were clean and comfy (but no kettle- for a hot drink you had to go to the bar and carry it back to the room).

We recently spent a week at the Alpen Roc as part of a Shearing Coach holiday. We couldn't fault the hotel, our room was very clean and comfortable with a lovely view. We asked for a complimentary tray [an electrical kettle] so we could do our own brews in the room. The buffet style meals were well cooked and presented and there were several choices to suit most tastes, a great salad bar and desserts to die for. All in all it was a fabulous week thanks to the good people we met and David our tour driver. He took us on some excellent trips and enlightened us with his enthusiasm and vast knowledge of the area and its history. We would recommend this holiday to anyone. Janet & Cliff Lever, Todmorden.

Room Tip: A high floor will get you better views and a balcony is even better

We stayed at the Alpen Roc hotel whilst on holiday with Generation Travel from Stokesley in England. The hotel was quite high in the village with lovely views from the balcony and hotel rooms.
The hotel was very clean and the food at all meals was excellent. The staff were very obliging and nothing was too much trouble The only common complaint was the silly size of the shower screen which allowed water to escape on to the floor. This in itself did not detract from an excellent holiday. We would definitely go back to this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms above the fourth floor up to the seventh floor have to change lifts on the second floor
