Just back from a long weekend in Hotel La Carlina and am glad to say it turned out to be a good choice. We picked it because we had limited choice of hotels during the french half-term but they were happy to accommodate our party in several rooms for a short (3-day) stay.
The resort - nice little town. Lots of chalets further out form the centre which looked nice but would have required a car. Heavy traffic clogging up the roads in 'rush hour' over the weekend we were there. Quite a few hills - the hotel is about 500m up the hill form the slopes which is no problem in the mornings but a bit of a hike to get home at the end of the day. Fortunately the hotel has an arrangement with Sport 2000 in town and skis can be left there (50m easy walk from the pistes).
Skiing - really good. Quite easy. Extensive red and blue runs in a circuit (in one direction - not quite connected in the other). When we were there most of the blacks were closed. Those left open looked steep with huge moguls. Effective lift network but includes quite a few button lifts and 'old' chairs. Fine for a long weekend or a week for less serious skiers. The extended lift pass (which includes another resort 7 km away) would be worth buying if there for a week to extend the skiing.
Rooms - rustic / wooden. Not luxurious but clean and very modern bathrooms. We paid the extra for South facing and the views over the town and up the slopes were great. Big balconies with chairs and tables. Interconnecting rooms available. One room near the lift and we were glad it stopped operating between 10.30pm and 7.30am which enabled a good night's sleep.
Public areas - Hotel looks a bit tired from the outside but fine inside. Free wifi throughout (and in rooms but signal a bit weak in places). Lovely bar / lounge. Nice indoor pool (free) and fitness centre/spa (€12/day pp). Luggage can be left after checkout and the pool changing rooms used after return from skiing if checked out.
Dining - buffet breakfast included - largely continental with breads / croissants / fruit / yoghurts / cereal etc + ham, cheeses, fresh boiled eggs - exactly what was needed. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was really good and they have a €30 for 3 courses (a la carte) arrangement (which includes things like fondue / steak etc).
La Cordee restaurant (which I highly recommend) is just across the road (but down 55 steps to the entrance).
We will be back!
