Just back from a long weekend in Hotel La Carlina and am glad to say it turned out to be a good choice. We picked it because we had limited choice of hotels during the french half-term but they were happy to accommodate our party in several rooms for a short (3-day) stay.

The resort - nice little town. Lots of chalets further out form the centre which looked nice but would have required a car. Heavy traffic clogging up the roads in 'rush hour' over the weekend we were there. Quite a few hills - the hotel is about 500m up the hill form the slopes which is no problem in the mornings but a bit of a hike to get home at the end of the day. Fortunately the hotel has an arrangement with Sport 2000 in town and skis can be left there (50m easy walk from the pistes).

Skiing - really good. Quite easy. Extensive red and blue runs in a circuit (in one direction - not quite connected in the other). When we were there most of the blacks were closed. Those left open looked steep with huge moguls. Effective lift network but includes quite a few button lifts and 'old' chairs. Fine for a long weekend or a week for less serious skiers. The extended lift pass (which includes another resort 7 km away) would be worth buying if there for a week to extend the skiing.

Rooms - rustic / wooden. Not luxurious but clean and very modern bathrooms. We paid the extra for South facing and the views over the town and up the slopes were great. Big balconies with chairs and tables. Interconnecting rooms available. One room near the lift and we were glad it stopped operating between 10.30pm and 7.30am which enabled a good night's sleep.

Public areas - Hotel looks a bit tired from the outside but fine inside. Free wifi throughout (and in rooms but signal a bit weak in places). Lovely bar / lounge. Nice indoor pool (free) and fitness centre/spa (€12/day pp). Luggage can be left after checkout and the pool changing rooms used after return from skiing if checked out.

Dining - buffet breakfast included - largely continental with breads / croissants / fruit / yoghurts / cereal etc + ham, cheeses, fresh boiled eggs - exactly what was needed. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was really good and they have a €30 for 3 courses (a la carte) arrangement (which includes things like fondue / steak etc).

La Cordee restaurant (which I highly recommend) is just across the road (but down 55 steps to the entrance).

We will be back!

We stayer here with friends for a weekend. The service was verf friendly and the rooms are very nicely decorated. The breakfast buffet is amazing. Make sure to take a room with a view of the mountain. Only downside is the fact that you have to pay extra to use the sauna and to park your car (no enough space outside). At these rates that should come included!

Hotel Carlina is not the most expensive hotel in La Clusaz, but it definitely is one of the best options ! We have been going there nearly every year for more than 15 years, as a family of four, and also with friends, and the way the hotel has improved its charm and decoration over the years is just amazing. Wooden decorated rooms make this Chalet-looking human size hotel a very cosy and romantic place, and kids also like it thanks to the smimming pool.Every detail has been well though of, and bookworms will love the incredible libraries in the cosy bar area. Ski slopes are a bit far away, but the hotel owns lockers right on the ski slopes, so you do not have to carry your gear. On the other hand, location is the best in the village for watching the Aravis mountaign range, and having a drink on the terrace in summer, before enjoying the always delicious dinner, is just a great experience.

Room Tip: "South" rooms have the best view.

When I found out that the hotel Carlina was only a 3 star I was shocked. The rooms were nicely presented in a log cabin inspired attractive decor, bathrooms were modern, but unfortunatly lacking a bath. There are two room options; north and south facing, south being a more expensive cost. The south facing rooms do have a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains, but it's wasted as your hardly in the hotel at all. I had room 109 which is a north facing room but as it was on the end I had a balcony with a view of the mountains and the surrounding chalets. Throughout the day the rooms do tend to get very hot so it's best to turn the heating down. A digital satilite television is avalible English channels are around 20-30.

The facilities at le Carlina are excellent, the swimming pool is fabulous as you can see the mountains while you swim, the use on the sauna, jacuzzi and gym (spa) however is an extra €12 per person per day, which I feel is a little pricy.
Whilst looking at the photos the pool area and gym has had a re-vamp and looks a lot more professional and relaxing.

The area of la clusaz is a warming, friendly town, although it is very busy during the ski season, food can be a little overpriced but is always of a good quality. To go out for a meal you do have to book a table otherwise you will be waiting hours.

Overall the holiday was beautiful and worth the money, just wish we stayed longer than we did.

Just returning from a 5 day ski break with our 4 teenagers. Would highly recommend the Carlina for really good 3 star hotel in a pretty ski resort. Rooms are comfortable and bathrooms recently refurbished to excellent standard. But more importantly if you are a bit of a foody and like authentic French produce well cooked , then chose half-board option. It's much easier than walking to town and is certainly worth any extra cost ! Only negative comment is there is an up hill walk at end of the day skiing which is tough on the legs and it would be nice to have tea/coffee making facilities in the room. Would not put me off we would definitely go back !

This hotel was super. We haven't got tons of cash so for a lower budget it was quite luxurious. Great little leisure club, near local 25m pool, opposite slopes, short walk into village. Helpful staff, clean rooms, the rooms at the front looked amazing with a superb view but we opted for the cheaper rooms at the back and it was lovely. Small but not the end of the world. Expensive restaurant and bar, on the whole great trip.

Excellent location in the village, walking distance from all shops, but in a quiet area overlooking the resort (amazing view).
Excellent food a la carte with a very good staff.
Cosy rooms and nice swimming pool .
Very charming hotel like a big chalet, to be recommended for summer vacations.
The resort must also be a very nice place for skiing in winter!
