We stayed at the Hotel Souleil d'or over New Year and were delighted with our choice. We booked through Crystalski and they were also excellent, they made sure at all points in our stay that we were satisfied with all aspects of our break .(Cheers Dan and crew)
The hotel staff also made our stay pleasant, being ignorant Brits, our French was to say the least basic, but most of the staff had good language skills and this made things a lot easier for us. They were courteous and eager to please, which some have said was not the case during their stay, so maybe they are taking notice.
The room was well decorated and comfortable, with wooden ceilings and a fantastic balcony overlooking the slopes. There was a little noise at night as the snow cannons are quite close, and the noise of explosions during the early morning which we were told was avalanche precautions, but nothing so bad that it kept us awake, just thuds in the distance.
The facilities include sauna and Jacuzzi, small bar area and lounge, computer access, table tennis and heated ski storage. The resort ski pass includes the heated outdoor swimming pool, in the town, which seemed well used, but at between -5 and -15 not by us!!
The skiing in resort we found a little daunting at first, but once up the mountain we soon found our favourites and began to relax into the alpine skiing experience, the snow was better higher as are the views. The instruction was good, although it was a little slow as we were placed in an English and Italian group, so all explanations were done twice.
Finally, a lot has been said about the food and it is superb, breakfast was continental style, and the evening meals were a real treat, well cooked, well presented and tasted fantastic. Wine was €19 for the house red, but curiously no house white, and really set off our meal. If you can't manage a full bottle, they will save it for the following night.
We are already looking to book New Year 2009, and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

We stayed at this hotel for 7 nights over the New Year and loved it. The hotel is centrally situated, right at the bottom of the slopes. Everything was spotless and very warm and welcoming.
We had room 20 on the second floor, which had a lovely balcony with stunning mountain views. The double bed was very comfortable and there ws a spare single bed in the room also. The bathroom and toilet were separate and the bathroom had a shower and a bath. Towels were plentful and warmed on a huge heated towel rail. The bathrom has a hairdrier, but there's no kettle - we took our own. There was also a TV, although there was only one English channel (BBC News). The safe in the room is free.
The meals were outstanding - excellent choice at breakfast and four beautifully presented gourmet courses every evening. New Year's Eve was a Gala dinner - with seven courses altogether. At midnight, a highland piper came into the restaurant, which was a lovely festive touch, then there was a disco afterwards.
In the basement of the hotel there are ski lockers - one per room - which are free. These have boot warmers in them and plenty of room for your stuff.
Contrary to other reviewers, we found all the staff very friendly and helpful. They were able to answer any questions we had and all of them were keen to make sure we enjoyed our stay. On the last morning, we left at 6am, and the lady on reception came to find us the night before so we could order our early breakfast.
We'd definitely return to this hotel.

We stayed at this hotel in March 08.The holiday was booked on the internet with Crystal, for myself,my husband, his twin brother and wife, and another couple. We were celebrating the twins' 50th birthday (feb) and our silver wedding (may). We chose the holiday because of the good reviews on Trip Advisor, rather than specifically for Les 2 Alpes, which has been called the 'Blackpool' of the ski resorts. Not a pretty resort, and very popular with snowboarders.

I was very impressed with the Hotel on arrival- an attractive building next to the slopes, pretty fairy lights, and a very warm, cosy and welcoming interior with lovely decor. We were taken to our rooms, and as the doors were opened I was pleased to see that the rooms looked warm, inviting and nicely furnished, with spotlights, modern tv on a chest of drawers, armchairs, and ornate wood carved pelmets and headboards. There was a double or single bed in the entrance, opposite the bathroom and separate loo, with a double bed in the main room. They were quite spacious, and I thought how lovely they were. Then our door was opened. What a difference. We had obviously drawn the short straw.Much smaller than the other two rooms, cramped entrance with the bunk beds,no nice carved pelmets, plain white artex walls and ceiling, and harsh fluorescent light strip instead of the soft spotlights. There was a table and 2 chairs, but no armchairs. The TV was an old black 14 inch perched high on a wall bracket near the ceiling( too high for me to reach). You had to lie flat on the bed to watch it!! The room felt like being in a basement. My heart sank and I was very upset after seeing the other two rooms. My husband went to reception to ask if we could change, but the woman is totally miserable and unfriendly (as others have mentioned) and said nothing was available. We saw guests leaving during the week, so we could have changed later, but were not offered this.
The room certainly took the edge off the holiday for me.
Otherwise, the hotel is lovely, with excellent food.It is only a short walk to the chairlift. You need good weather for Les 2 Alpes so you can ski on the high slopes which are lovely. There is an ice grotto at the top. We had two cloudy/snowy days with poor visibility, so everyone was confined to the lower slopes. This made it very busy and I was hit by a snowboarder and sent flying(found on return home that I had broken ribs). We went on a day trip to Serre Chevalier.Much prettier resort, good varied skiing over a wide area.Much quieter than Les 2 Alpes. No snowboarders!!! You can also go by helicopter from Les 2 Alpes to Alpe D'Huez for a day.

There is a great bar for Apres Ski in Les 2 Alpes called Smokey Joe's. This is a must for British skiiers. Fantastic atmosphere, great singer/guitarist plays all the popular classic songs everyone sings along to,dancing on tables, conga etc !! Certainly the best we have come across.

Overall, I would recommend the Hotel Souleil ' Or but make sure you don"t have room 12 bis !!!!!!!

We had a great short ski trip and the resort and skiing are very good.

The Hotel is in a very good position but we had a few niggles. The older Lady on reception and the young barman could both do with a lesson in how to smile and be polite to customers. The rooms all be them clean are basic and small. We spent most of our time out of the hotel both to drink and eat as the hotel was very quiet ,we are forty something's and don't want a roudy place but it was a bit dull. Having said that the position as I say is excellent and yes I would return.

* Highly recomend the Crepes Gogo restaurant on the main street. We turned up and they were fully booked however they managed to squeeze us in and what a lovely charming restaurant it was, recomend the hot stone steak for 2 with 6 sauces !!

My husband and I have just returned from a weekend skiing trip in Les Deux Alpes. We chose this hotel based upon the reviews on TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed one bit.

The room was perfect for a skiing break and very authentic and cosy. We had a south facing balcony which was great, but we were not there to take advantage of it as we were on the slopes all day. The staff at the hotel were all very friendly and hospitable and the food was excellent. Four courses every evening and it was delicious. We were also able to ski practically to the hotel door which was definitely a bonus.

The hotel directed us to a local ski hire shop where we received a 10 per cent discount as guests of the hotel.

We are returning to Les Deux Alpes for a week's skiing in March - our decision was swayed by the quality and friendliness of this hotel.

This is a 3 star rated establishment. The hotels rooms are three star and pretty basic, but travellers are not here to stay in teh bedroom. Our room smelled of smoke and had two single beds pushed together, but was fine. Bathroom is average size for 3 star. Small TV with only BBC World in English language.

The bar area is nice and big as is the restaurant. The food servred was fabulous, if you were in a very expensive restaurant you would still be amazed. Each of the 6 days we stayed the evening meal was extremly tasty, believe me you will enjoy that. The wine list is all French and reasonably priced.

There is a jucuzzi, steam room and small gym. The jacuzzi is open from 16.00 until 20.00 each day, and after skiing is popular. There is also a table tennis table in the basement along with an old fashioned video game.

We went with Crystal Ski, the ski school was booked through them and was about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. We used the European Ski school which I believe have the best qualified instructurs - they were excellent. We booked ski equipment and boots locally.

Les Deux Alps has plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from. We went out two evening for junk food to escape the bulges we were putting on from the rich but excellent hotel food.

All in all I would definitely go back to this hotel, I might insist more strongly this time for a no smoking room and double bed, but that was a minimal complaint. The service in the hotel was fantastic and they could not do enough for you. It is very well run, very clean and great food.
