“Comfort and charm”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2012

I first visited Ferme de Montagne just after it opened & have been back twice now. One of the things that really impresses is that not only have the very high standards of friendly care and service been maintained, but they continue to balance charm with comfort - even checking what sort of pillow you prefer to sleep on before you arrive! I love the ambiance of the first floor dining room with its big fire and views over the snow, with the glass of champagne before dinner. The quality of everything - whether it's the homemade spelt-flour bread for breakfast, the bedlinen, the wine list, or the food - is of a much higher standard than many top hotels. And a real bonus point for me was the luxury of a really excellent facial and massage to counteract any exertions on the slopes! I've tried to think of any aspect to staying here that doesn't please, because it's unusual to find a place that manages to consistently tick all the boxes but, for me, this one does.

Room Tip: All the rooms are beautifully appointed and comfortable and have nice views.

I knew this was going to be a good experience when they contacted me before I arrived to discuss my needs. It is proving even better, the ski guide picked us up from the airport and we had rented skis and were on the piste 6 hours after leaving Edinburgh. Everything is sorted for you, passes ready on arrival, massage etc. a real treat, but the best is the food. You would come here all year round to enjoy this food, though the skiing helps work it off.

Many of the guests staying here I'm sure come for the amazing food - we certainly did. We've stayed at several other very good hotels in the Alps for our skiing holidays, and nowhere comes near this for sheer good value, not only for the hotel, but especially for the food. Every meal was a real treat, every day. Unlike other hotel restaurants, we had several choices that changed every evening. The cooking is impeccable, imaginative, always spot on. Even the breakfasts are totally wonderful. Why this chef doesn't yet have a Michelin star is a mystery. Perhaps Michelin remains out of touch and old fashioned - we have been to a couple of other fabulous restaurants that should clearly have a star, but do not not.

Well, there's also the hotel that we really liked. It was simply utterly comfy, elegant, everything we wanted was there. Totally comfy beds and bed linen, totally comfy bathrooms, it was always warm and cosy, windows opened on to snow covered trees. There was a gorgeous wood fire burning in the dining/living room.

The staff, mainly young grads, are always tryied to please, the owners were the most friendly and charming of people, who were exceptionally nice to us.

We liked the swish hassle-free pick up at the airport, our driver picked up all our suitcases, opened the car doors for us, we were treated like VIPs. The same on arrival at the hotel.

The TVs in the room had only a couple of English channels, and were rather small. But there was an i-pod dock, which was a real plus - good music and a glass of wine late at night in our room was lovely. The managers were a rather gloomy couple, he managed not to engage in any conversation with us for our whole stay, and the manageress seemed disinterested - she drove me down to the village on a sunny day in a vehicle with dirty windows, which would have taken no more than 1 minute to clean, and she walked past some litter by the front door with me as though it was someone else's job to pick it up. Everyone else was very interested in making our stay special, and it was.

Brilliant food, a gorgeous building, we felt completely rested and refreshed after a week which went by all too quickly. Great value too.

This could be the Country House or Ski Chalet of the Savoy.

Utterly different in style, but equal in quality, a great experience. I thought about the connection when we stayed at the Savoy, and I ran myself a bubble bath. The bath salts (albeit meagre in a cellophane packet) were pretty good, but not a patch on the gorgeous home made salts in a huge glass jar at the Fermes des Montagnes.

Everything you could want in the bathroom ( cosy heated floor and demisted mirror, what a treat). Fantastic food, sort of contemporary Michelin, not fussy or complicated, just superbly cooked. That said, my husband remarked that you don't get a quick meal here. The breakfast is the best of all the 5* hotels we have stayed in, incredibly good coffee, proper eggs with glorious golden yolks, toast made from trendy Spelt, all the rage in healthy eating these days.

Just loved it, and a complete bargain for what you get.

One of our top 10 places to stay. Many things are perfect: firstly, the genuinely warm welcome and the feeling that you are special. The owner is fantastic at this, as are the young smiling staff.

Secondly, it is a beautiful chalet in an unbeatable location, directly opposite the ski lift, away from the noise of town.

Thirdly, the food is phenomenal – the chef is definitely a rising star.

Fourthly, it is actually very good value, because so much is included at no charge.

The wifi works all the time (and is not charged for), the beds are bliss, with lovely smooth sheets, and the homemade bath salts are exquisite. The manager did not seem to be that attentive, but we had a fabulous stay.

This is a fabulous chalet/hotel, and we will come again.

You never know whether a favourite hotel will be as good when you go back as it was on your first visit. We were not disappointed coming back here. The lovely building has been kept in excellent condition, with many small improvements that we noticed: new Nespresso machines, new flat screen TVs (although still small), I-pod docks, more comfortable seating around the fireplace with a gorgeous coffee table (featured in the Lutyens book alongside), much better WiFi.

The food is of an even higher standard, absolutely superb, a highlight of our holiday. The wine list is much more interesting (especially the Burgundies) and some excellent value. The lovely owner is still around a lot, but less hands on it seems in the day to day running of the hotel, with a manager in place. And it shows in the details...Whilst we thought that the hotel was still fantastic, not all the standards were as high as when the owner managed the hotel herself. Small things, but they matter, almost as though the manager had not worked in a hotel of this standard before. But still one of the best chalet hotels around.

One of the best holidays we have had. Fantastic food at breakfast and dinner, top class ski guiding, gorgeous building, super comfy beds, silky sheets, delicious bathroom products, and lovely guests (at least when we were there!)

Although obviously there are some who are not only picky but also write nonsense: the library/afternoon tea room downstairs has at 7 leather seats , not 2 – true, upstairs there isn’t a big sitting room, but there are 9 comfy leather chairs, plus barstools at the bar and a banquette area where our family plays cards and games.

And accommodation is underpriced really, if you deduct the cost of all the extraordinarily good food, ski guiding which would cost more than 400€ a day, airport transfers about 140€ each way locally, not to mention all the complimentary things, Jo Malone body lotion (and my wife now makes me buy it for her, I know the cost), good quality champagne when you arrive and the owners occasionally offering decent after dinner drinks..

To be fair to the guest before, the hotel is not wholly soundproof, but nor is it noisy. And to be fair to the hotel, if the sound of children is not ok, then there are weeks with no children. Even we try to come then as well. The most irritating sound issue for us was the new Manager/ head receptionist talking in the corridor outside our room. Actually very rude, not to us directly, but to the owner, which was not very considerate of us. Otherwise the staff were so friendly, considerate and pleasant, all young and cheerful. The owner is a completely naturally talented hotel person.
Forget the picky guests– we love it here.
