“Hotel Marmotte - Les Gets”
Reviewed 22 April 2013

Our family has stayed at the Marmotte many times and it now feels like Home from Home. The staff are unfailingly friendly and helpful. The food has been inconsistant upon occasions but this is just about to get a whole lot better with planned investment in the kitchen. The Spa is a delight and although Les Gets is on the edge of the Portes du Soleil it has real charm and some great mountain restaurants.
Oh and the Marmotte could not be closer to the lifts and ticket office. Intersport next door offer great ski hire service and really care for their clients.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front have great view of the slopes. Duplex rooms are great fun for a budget weekend wi...

We stayed for a week in January and were so satisfied with the hotel that we arranged for all the family and some friends to join us so on Easter Saturday when 20 sat down for dinner in the splendid restaurant. Our booking was very complex,a single, doubles, family and mature family rooms, all with differing arrival and departure dates.the booking staff could not have done more. Superb embracing our every need. The rooms suited our requirements and the games room and large pool were great for the kids.ski hire next door discounted and slopes across the road.food quality was excellent and varied and the wines reasonably priced. That the snow was excellent and the sun shone sometimes enhanced an unforgettable family adventure.

Room Tip: It's worth paying a bit more for an upgraded room facing the slopes

A fantastic family ski hotel. Great location, close to slopes, ski lifts, shops and restaurants. Extremely helpful, welcoming and efficient staff on reception. All staff very friendly. We stayed in a family room in the recently renovated La Tapiaz, an annexe to the main hotel and above the spa. Well decorated in contemporary style. Only problem was that first family room had a tiny and rather airless children's bedroom with bunk beds, which would have been ok for small children. With 15 and 12 yr old boys, it definitely wasn't big enough. We were quickly changed to another similar family with better accommodation for our older children. Great swimming pool and spa. Restaurant was fine but no choice on the menu in the evening and we preferred to eat out. Breakfasts in the hotel were very good. La Marmotte also run a very good mountain restaurant - La Paika - which is definitely worth a visit. Bit of a shame not to have a ski room but Intersport right next door was very convenient. Believe the bedrooms in the main hotel will be refurbished in the near future, which I'm sure will be a good thing. Would definitely go back to La Marmotte and would recommend it highly for a family ski holiday.

if you are in les Gets you will not see a better location. just about 50 paces from the main chair lift and 100 from the ski school start points.

Skiing
one very annoying thing for a ski hotel: no ski room. stunned. you had to leave skis in next door intersport. fine but a pair of gloves went missing, in a ski equipment shop... mmmh... anyway, skiing is les gets is really impressive. if staying less then one week only get the les Gets lift pass. it covers Les gets and the next door resort, and is mre then you need for 4 to 5 days.l longer and you can get the full pass. grooming best i have seen anywhere. not challanging. my 6 and 8 year olds did theri first black runs there, so not great if you are happy in swiss alps. generally though the run quality and choice are more then enough for intermediates and beginneers

Breakfast
typical european smallish choice, all good quality. great coffee.
Dinners was ok. not too easy to get something that suited all of a family of 5. bit eclectic and high end without being actually good. excellent food at end of side street nearby, "les copeaux". top quality and reasonable
spa
good pool, but chilly, after day skiing a few extra degree would have been nice. sauna, damfbad etc well below austrian, german, swiss standards, shame
Room
we had a 2 room suite in newest part of hotel. not cheap. compared to pricier austiran resorts made it seem VERY expensive. ok quality. very few in room extras. main annoyance was two beams which meant i had to keep ducking. should have been told when I was booking. I assume the othger floors did not have this problem
Staff.
very helpful. manager seemed extra grumpy most times

overall location alone make it a winner. cant compare to other Les gets places, but compared to other better austrian and italian resorts it seemed overpriced

Room Tip: dont take third floor above spa part of hotel. beams an issue

Really impressed with the warm welcome and the friendly staff. The location couldn't be any better for the skilifts at Charvannes. Lots of hot water and the access to the spa with pool/sauna/wet room and hot tub was a luxury. OK, so the room could have been larger and the matresses weren't brilliant but I am being picky now...

The staff deserve a specific mention. They were friendly, helpful - arranging airport transfers, restaurant reservations, ski passes etc - and always a pleasure to deal with. Amazing how much difference this made.

I would recommed this hotel to anyone looking for a good hotel for a ski trip.

GOOD POINTS :
Location close to ski lifts
nice big lounge with fire place
good comfy beds
rooms well heated
electric shutters outside windows
small safe
private car parking(fee)
friendly staff
BAD POINTS ;
no fridge, no water , no kettle in room
bathroom needs updating (stained basin and top)
standard rooms small, superior room ok
no ski storeroom in hotel
ski/boots in open store room at shop (inter sport) next door down steps
food average
conclusion : This hotel is in the Thomson ski brochure and as a result
the Thomson ski customers pay a reasonable price for 1week half board
including flights and transfers. When you book privatly a double/breakfast room
in the ski season you pay between euros 350-400 per day per couple.
This rate is high and you would expect better rooms and breakfast but you
get the package holiday service as most customers are Thomson.
My advise is book with Thomson if you want this hotel.
If you have your own expensive ski boots you wont like storing them at the shop.
If you rent at shop you get hotel discount however still cheaper to rent
beforehand online with Intersport.
This hotel has in a building next door a spa/swimmingpool which we did not use so cannot comment on this facility.
Message to hotel : If you charge your private customers such prices, treat them accordinly !
Better rooms,better breakfast,and table service.

Room Tip: superior room

We have been skiing in many resorts throughout France, however we were taking our 2 beginner skiing children aged 10 & 11 this year, so we searched for family friendly resorts in France and then narrowed this down by choosing one as far north and west as possible as we were driving this time and didn't want to subject the kids to a drive from hell.

When we arrived at La Marmotte in Les Gets (just 9 hours door to door including the channel crossing) we were warmly welcomed and then struggled with all our bags up 4 flights of stairs as the lift (1) was out of service. The room was 'ok', nothing spectacular and quite small to be honest. Lights were somewhat dodgy and flickered constantly, the patio door didn't lock properly and head height upstairs was limited. On the positive, the master bed was very very comfortable and the duvet was thick and very cosy...

What we didn't realise until we ventured out, was the location to the slopes. Quite positively the best location in town and the lowest lifts (2 drag, 1 chair and the gondola) were just across the road (5 metres away) This made for a moan free trappes with the kids :-)

We ate in the hotel one evening and were shocked to be charged such high prices for not a lot. Example, the kids didn't want to join us for a cheese fondue so they opt for the chicken nuggets and chips (which were served in a polystyrene container as they were brought in from an outside source (take away style) and we were charged a whacking €24 per head - not great, and 2 adult servings of cheese fondue with some lettuce came to €135 - a tad steep I thought.

To summarise: Ski school was good, slopes fantastic, restaurants in the locale were as expected in a keen ski resort in France, hotel was expensive, but cheap feel, but done the trick nonetheless... in total, we had a fantastic time and the kids came home wanting more :-)
