“Family holiday of a lifetime”
Reviewed 17 April 2014

I’ve just returned from the family holiday of a lifetime in Samoens, France, the freshest most picturesque part of the French Alps (the French proudly describe it as one of their monuments historiques).

I took a family group of ten to enjoy the penultimate week of the ski season, which is the best of both worlds: skiing in the morning, and sun lounging and lake walking in the afternoon!

We stayed with Absolute Alpine, a luxury chalet company who cater for those looking for that extra special something in their summer or winter holiday adventure. The chalet (La Grande Ourse) was just perfect for us all (spacious yet cosy/comfortable) and we didn’t have to lift a finger at all, particularly during breakfast, lunch or dinner - we simply glanced over at the menu on the black board and waited happily for our next gourmet meal. This meant we could spend even longer in the hot tub after an arduous (and often hilarious) day’s skiing. No complaints there!

Sam and Steve, the couple behind Absolute Alpine were just amazing. They ensured our stay was of the highest standards. They took us to and from the ski hire shop/bubble each day, and offered unlimited assistance whenever requested. We travelled with our three 1/2 year old daughter and they were very understanding of our additional needs as parents.

We would love to return every year, twice a year (summer and winter). Fingers crossed we will...

Thanks for your lovely review.

We're so glad that you had such a lovely family holiday with us. It was a pleasure looking after your group and it's always exciting to see new skiers (and boarders) experiencing the joys of a ski holiday alongside the 'seasoned pros'.

We're also very pleased that you all got to appreciate the benefits of a holiday later in the ski season. I agree that a long morning's skiing followed by an afternoon more akin to a summer holiday is a real treat... That said, it's still pretty early in the year for me to brave swimming in the chilly mountain lake as one of your party did - it's typically a summer activity and a winter season swimmer is certainly an Absolute Alpine first!

Thanks for choosing us to contribute to a lovely family holiday - we very much hope to see you out here again!

Thanks again for sharing your review,
Steve, Sam and the Absolute Alpine team

Four of us stayed in La Petit Ourse last week and we had the most fantastic time. This was our first foray into a catered chalet having always rented a chalet privately before and we were not disappointed. The apartment is spacious and well appointed, and had everything we wanted.

The team at Absolute Alpine are brilliant and nothing was too much trouble. We were looked after throughout our stay and I honestly struggle to find fault in the whole stay.

Every morning we had a lovely breakfast, with a 'hot option' which changed every day cooked by Lauren the chef. If preferred they would also cook eggs and bacon for you in the chalet to your requirements (Stuart’s poached eggs are good). When breakfast was finished Steve would load our boards in the van (a nice touch by the way) and drive us to the telecabine. If Samoens was busy he would happily take us to Vercland to miss the queue which is a good tip.

After a long day on the slopes we would end by the Vercland lift in a nice and pretty bar (La Reposette I think) and give Steve a call. He then came straight out and collected us, waited while we finished our drinks and even joined us for one on our last day. This made getting back to the chalet a breeze and certainly beats the sweaty Samoens 'ski-bus'.

Upon getting back to the chalet there would be a cake, bread and preserves and tea and coffee facilities waiting for us. The cakes were amazing; we still talk about Lauren's chocolate brownies which were probably the best we have ever had.

A dip in the private hot tub with a beer followed while we wound down and rested the legs in anticipation of dinner which was fantastic every evening. The food was varied and different every night, and served with wine which perhaps we enjoyed a little too much. The food was so good, we certainly didn't miss going out to a restaurant every night.

The little extras they did for us were brilliant, loading the boards in the van every morning, booking us a restaurant in advance for the day off, ensuring the honesty bar had everything we wanted in it, Alice getting up at stupid O'clock to ensure we had breakfast before our stupidly early transfer, all added to the experience.

We would like to say a special thanks to Steve, Sam, Stuart, Alice and Lauren who made the whole stay enjoyable, it’s highly likely we will be seeing you again very soon.

As I say in the title, probably the best chalet in Samoens – we certainly think so.

Wow! Thanks for such a thorough review.

It was a real pleasure having you all to stay in the Petite Ourse.

It's nice to see that the Absolute Alpine team effort in making everything hassle free worked a treat.

One thing that did surprise me with your review was the universally positive response to the honesty bar... From memory, the Chartreuese (a locally produced spirit with a recipe unchanged since 1737) wasn't appreciated by all 'encouraged' to drink it!

We hope that we've converted you to catered chalet holidays for good! If you're still wavering, I'd remind you once more of the chocolate brownies...

We very much hope to see you next year!

Seven smiles at the end of a super week’s skiing (and snowboarding) marked another excellent holiday with Absolute Alpine. Having previously stayed in the Grande and Petite Ourse our smaller group this year meant that Chalet La Roche was the perfect size. The chalet is spacious, modern and chic, with a beautiful view across the valley, and only a short stroll to the centre of Samoens. During our stay the weather was even good enough to get the deckchairs out on the balcony one afternoon, and the hot tub is a nice touch for soothing those après-ski aches away.

Our hosts Geoff and Vic were friendly and welcoming, and helped make the week a special one for all of us – from gentle encouragement of the brand new skiers to a lovely wedding anniversary cake; their thoughtful touches were appreciated by all of us.

The Absolute Alpine signature level of care remained evident on this trip – flexible pick ups and drop offs, tasty food and real enthusiasm to make sure your holiday is a good one. Thank you all for helping with the pre-trip-arrangements and making the week go smoothly and so successfully. We think very highly of Samoens, a charming and welcoming village, and of Absolute Alpine.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review.

It was lovely to welcome your group back to Samoens and we're happy that we managed to deliver another great holiday in the changed setting of Chalet La Roche.

We were really pleased that you chose us to celebrate your wedding anniversary with and equally chuffed that you liked the cake (Vic's cakes are awesome!)

Thanks for choosing us again for next year already - we're very much looking forward to seeing those seven smiling faces again next winter!

We stayed in La Petite Ourse. The service was outstanding through the whole week. Everyone in the staff was always very helpful and nothing was too complicated. The chalet was perfect for our family of 2 adults and 2 children. The hot tub was a tremendous success with the children. The food was absolutely fabulous. We had a big breakfast with a hot option every morning, cake in the afternoon after skiing and a super dinner in the evening. Dinner was well prepared, very ambitious and very polpular with the children who discovered new favourite dishes. The location of the chalet is excellent with just a few minutes´ walk to the village. We were well taken care of by Steve who drove us the short distance to and from the ski lift every day. The skiing has been fantastic with lots of snow in the slopes and perfect conditions for everyone. The booking process was very smooth and the transfer to/from the airport and ski passes were arranged through Sam, who was very helpful also with restaurant reservations. We all agree that this has been one of the best ski holiday experiences we have had. We had a wonderful week and we have already decided to come back next year.

We stayed with Steve and Sam at La Grand Ourse for half-term week 2014 as part of a group of 13 including five children aged 9 to 14.

We have been skiing together since 2008, and we all agreed that this was one of the best chalet experiences that we have had. From booking with Sam, through to dealing with Steve and the team in resort, nothing was too much trouble. Service was fantastic.

La Grand Ourse is a great chalet, comfortable and well equipped. The hot tub and pool table certainly got a lot of use. Location is also good, really close to the town, so you can walk in for the shops and bars easily.

The chalet crew and the food were great. No request was too much trouble, including dealing with our early arrival and accommodating a second group of friends for dinner on the last two nights of our holiday.

I'd have no hesitation in recommending Absolute Alpine. Thanks Steve, Sam and the crew. We had a cracking holiday!

Thanks so much for your review.

We thoroughly enjoyed having your group to stay with us and are really pleased that you had such a great holiday.

With the games room a new addition to the Grande Ourse this year, it was brilliant to see it getting so much use and being the source of so much fun (and friendly competition!)

We love having families to stay (Samoens is a brilliant family resort) and it was great to see the your children having so much fun both on the slopes and in the chalet.

It was a real pleasure to meet you all and we very much hope to see you over in Samoens again!

We stayed in the apartment la Roche on a catered basis. This is a little lower down the hill than the main properties run by the company.

We have stayed 3 times in Samoëns, and so far this is our best experience. The basics: the apartment is comfortable, clean, warm and big enough for 4 people in the 2 bedrooms. There was also plenty of hot water, and decent showers. It is potentially connected to the bigger Chalet la Roche above, but we had it separately. Despite the additional sofa bed I am not sure I would try to get 6 adults in though. There is a garage for storing skis with racks and warmers if you need them.

The chalet is well located with only about a 20m climb and about 20 steps from the level of the main village. This gives a nice view but removes any need to complain about the thin air at altitude!

It is a 10min walk to the "bubble", but we were given lifts to the bubble and back every day.

Other facilities: - there is small TV but it has Sky and a DVD player. Steve and Sam the owners hold a smallish but useful and family friendly DVD selection too.

We were well looked after. The ethos of the company is a refreshing "it's your holiday, and our job to make it a good one", which sometimes is missing from chalets. The food was very good - varied, tasty, interesting but still child compatible. There was a hot option for breakfast each day. Our hosts Vik and Geoff (shared with the main 4 bed chalet, where all the food is actually cooked) were older and much more experienced than the usual spotty chalet host and it showed in the quality and timing of the food. The hosts have Tuesday off rather than the usual Wednesday, which makes restaurant bookings rather easier.

There is also a hot tub which primarily is for use by the main chalet. We were lucky enough that they agreed we could share this, which was nice. Putting this into the equation does add something to the skiing experience, and in practical terms there should be no reason both chalet and apartment can share in this.

To summarise - I could not fault absolute alpine. The service is excellent, properties nice, and it was pretty decent value. We would use the company again very happily - if only they had availability!

The only criticism I had was the lack of sun and powder on the last day..... Skiing eh?!

Hi Simon - thanks so much for your review.

Feedback is always appreciated and we're hugely grateful that you took so much time to write such a comprehensive response!

We're really pleased that you had such a fantastic time with us. As you mention, our aim is to make every holiday special and we like to accommodate all requests where possible - I'm glad this shines through.

We're delighted that you enjoyed the apartment (indeed, just 20 metres above the village gives uninterrupted views without the need to travel out of the village centre), the food (it's really important) and our service (something we take great pride in).

It was lovely to meet you and your family and we very much hope to see you again!

Thanks again for sharing,

We came upon Absolute Alpine by chance, but what a find, from the moment we booked to stay in La Petite Ourse and read the reviews we could not wait to start our holiday.
Having always stayed in a 'ski to the door' resort we did not know what to expect but it was one of our best ski trips and we have been on catered ski holidays since the late 1980's.
Steve & Sam have truly covered everything from the standard of the accommodation, to the professionally cooked meals, the enthusiastic and helpful staff, the little extras like the hot tub and being taken to and fetched from the lifts, you made us feel nothing was too much trouble, everything a perfect holiday should be.
We had an absolutely fantastic week and can't wait to return.

Thanks for your review Sally!

We loved having you over to stay and we're really pleased that you enjoyed venturing away from the world of 'ski-in/ski-out'. We think Samoens is an amazing and beautiful village and for the sake of a 5 minute ride in our minibus, it's definitely worth a visit.

Given your considerable history of catered holidays, it's great news that we made such an impression. We really do want to give every guest a care free and relaxed stay with us and it's lovely to get such feedback confirming we've delivered.

Thanks for picking us and taking time to write your review - we very much hope to see you again,
