“Amazing holiday”
Reviewed 4 March 2016 for a stay in January 2016

We had the most amazing week in this chalet. It had everything we needed and was very comfortable. In a great location, close to the town and with beautiful views across the valley. Sitting by the fire was wonderful after a long day skiing which the slopes certainly provided. The ski area was fab with a good variety of runs and great off piste. All in all a brilliant week and would certainly return! Thank you!

“Great time in cosy chalet”
Reviewed 17 February 2016 for a stay in January 2016

I had a great stay at Eridan with a group of friends in January 2016. The chalet is lovely and cosy with a big log burning fireplace (with loads of chopped wood provided). The kitchen is very well equipped to cook for groups. Beds are comfy and showers are hot and powerful. The wifi works well throughout the chalet and there is a big TV with movies saved on a hard drive. Good location, 5-10 minutes short walk from samoens village.
Samoens itself is a really nice little village, not overrun with hoards of people.
An excellent find.

“Great warm stay in lovely new chalet”
Reviewed 3 February 2016 for a stay in January 2016

We had a fantastic stay in Eridan, Samoens is a lovely village and Eridan is situated overlooking the entire valley.

The chalet has all the amenties; hairdryer, coffee press, television with external harddirve of films, iPod speaker. All fittings and appliances seem new. Plenty of wood for the fire! Beds were extremely comfy and chalet was clean.

It is about a five minute walk to the free bus stop which takes you directly to the main lift, or a fifteen minute walk all the way. We hired a locker at the main lift station (50 Euros/week) which comfortably fitted 5x skis and boots, and 1x snowboard - so we didn't have to carry those anywhere! Definitely worth it.

The ski area is fantastic, not too over crowded. Plenty of wide blues and reds, great for beginners, as well as more challenging off piste and blacks for more competent skiers.

“Lovely place to stay”

We had a great experience staying at the Chalet.

Hats off to Andy, Liz and their team - particularly Jamie, our chalet cook and host, to whom our 3 young girls took to almost immediately.

The chalet was clean, modern, warm, quiet (a big plus), superbly furnished, easily accessible and it was possible to park right outside the front door. The open log fire was a great bonus, particularly for a fire-bug like me (!).

The centre of town is only 5 mins walk down the hill, with all the amenities you could need within a few hundred metres - ski equipment rental, bars, shops, restaurants ... you name it ...

We stayed on a fully-catered basis and couldn't have wished for better food in terms of quality and quantity ... for all meals - breakfast, afternoon tea and evening dinner.

The lack of wifi is really NOT an issue - really. In the general area of Samoens, the network infrastructure really just isn't there to adequately support the population, so even basic mobile phone signals are weak and erratic - this is not the fault of the owners !! In reply to a previous occupier who complained about lack of wifi, it was a joy NOT to be bothered by work, thank you ! (Who goes on holiday to work, I might ask ?) ....

This being said about phone signals, beware of trying to pay in any of the mountain restaurants with any type of bank card as they use phone modems to authenticate credit card payments ... with the erratic network, these are often not operational. Just take some cash, and you're sorted.

We used Andy's recommendation in terms of ski lessons (with the group called Zig Zag) for our 7 year old twins and the local crèche for our youngest of 4 years .... this gave us a breather, so my wife and myself could ski on our own, but also meant that our twins could join us on some of the red runs just after the first few days - quite an achievement since they never skied before, and a reflection on the level of quality and service of the recommended ski school !

Personally, again in part-reply to a previous comment, I don't come on a ski holiday to watch TV, thanks, so the lack of channels isn't an issue. The supplied media box, with a great selection of films for all ages, was more than enough to cover any 'media starved' need.

All in all, a lovely holiday, good food, great snow (and sun) while we were there, super location and good value for money.

A+++

“Fabulous week in Samoens”
Reviewed 28 February 2014 for a stay in February 2014

We have just returned from a week in Chalet Eridan and absolutely loved it.

Samoens is a lovely, quaint town, with lots to do and as we stayed on a self catered basis found some great restaurants. The snow was excellent and the ability to ski over and enjoy a full day's skiing in Flaine was awesome!

The chalet was spotless, well equipped and spacious whilst still retaining its cosy feel. I will not forget waking up to those fabulous mountain views from the master bedroom (and we both commented that it was also the comfiest bed ever!).

The hosts were great, knowledgeable and attentive and went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay.

“Cosy with nice views but not well connected”

We stayed here on a fully catered basis. Chalet Eridan sits on a hill overlooking the village of Samoens. The views across the valley are stunning, but the hill is quite steep, and is not without its challenges when icy - for my money it would be foolish to attempt it in ski boots. Thankfully this was not necessary as we were given a lift to the ski shop where we stored our kit each day. We did walk back on 3 days - the walk from the lifts to the chalet took about half an hour at the pace of an 8 year old. Again checking the website, a lift to "bubble lift" upto 1600 is not part of the package so I would check before you book - for us I think lifts were only possible because we were not competing with the other chalets for the lift opening - had the kids been in lessons we might have been struck. Personally I would want to have a car if I was staying here again for skiing especially if self catering.

The apartment is quite new and pretty comfortable. I would agree that the kitchen is much better than most apartments, certainly much bigger than the MGMs that seem to be sprouting like weeds everywhere. The bedrooms too are a reasonable size and the view from the master is wonderful - the back bedroom has no view though. The apartment is quite spacious for 4 people, although if you are planning to fill it up to 8 you need psychiatrist help - perhaps, maybe in summer?! The whole place was spotlessly clean.

The food was pretty good, although the couple feeding us were a bit stretched since they were also catering for the Orion chalet which is much bigger and 20y away. Despite their best efforts there was always a sense that we were an extra. This is always a risk when a chalet is only part catered, and I am sure they will get into a 2 chalet groove. This may have been exacerbated by the fact we were the first catered guests, and one of the staff in another chalet was off sick for a few days, so I think it was a case of all hands to the pumps. On the food front, being picky I wouldn't have minded a few little hors d'ouevres as a prelude to supper - they don't cost much and they are.., well "nice"!

The single biggest downer was the lack of Wifi. This is compounded by the fact no mobile phone signal is strong enough to support 3G in the chalet so you can't even make a choice to pay the rapacious roaming data charges to ensure access to the outside world. To be fair Wifi is not advertised on the site, but beware. We extrapolated from the other chalets on the site, but this was a mistake. I had some work to do so this was a big problem. I ended up sitting outside the Orion chalet as snow fell just to borrow the Wifi signal. I cannot understand why the owners haven't invested in wifi or at least offered a few hundred quid to the neighbours who do have wifi!!?? We were with the kids so the lack of TV reception was a further issue - half a dozen DVDs simply does not make up for this - every other chalet we have stayed in at this sort of price point has at least had a sky box delivering free view.... New year was not the same without being able to watch a few fireworks and some inane celebrity blablah. There are no iPod docks either - so no music... Why - this is so easy to rectify? After a couple of longish (teenager) showers we ran out of hot water - water is heated overnight.... The chalet staff turned the heating on, but the warm up was ... well... glacial.

Please don't get the idea we disliked the place. As I said the chalet is comfortable and the log fire provided me with plenty of caveman satisfaction and entertainment. The recommendations for bookings on the chalet staff night off were safe and solid, and more to the point made even before we arrived since it was New Years day(!) - my wife is still raving about the pear liqueur enhanced sorbet she had. The thing is with wifi and a TV with a few working channels, the place would be a lot more rounded. Catered 4 bed units are in short supply, so I hope in future the owners commit a bit more and hire a chalet host and a van specifically for Eridan rather than making it an extra. For me they need to decide one way or another.

Samoens too is a great place - the village is very pretty, and remains very French - neither he Brits nor the Russians have taken over as they have in say val d'Isere or Courchavel. The skiing was good too!

Management Response

Thank you for taking the time to review apartment Eridan. We truly value the opinions of our customers, and were disappointed and surprised when we read this review, especially considering you had left stating that you had “had a lovely time”.

To address your points in order:

We do offer a free shuttle service to the ski lifts in the mornings and returning in the afternoon. Although you walked back to the chalet on three occasions, a return lift was offered to you every day, and it was your choice to walk. We are always flexible when offering runs to the ski lifts, and start early in the morning, to ensure children can get to their ski lessons on time.

Eridan is one of the few chalets in Samoens that offers a fully catered service exclusively for four guests. The cooking is done in our neighbouring chalet, so as not to disturb the guests in chalet Eridan as it is an open kitchen, and then served by your chalet host each night. We offer daily breakfast with a hot option, afternoon tea and homemade cakes, and a four course evening meal with quality wines. We don’t currently serve hors d’oeuvres, although we do offer a cheese course every night.

We take on board your criticism that there is no Wifi offered in the chalet. This is something that we hope to remedy in the future. There is an Ipod dock in the living room. Although there are no television channels, we can offer a media player with several hundred movies for you to enjoy. We are sorry that you ran out of hot water on one occasion. We immediately rectified this and it didn’t happen again throughout the stay. The chalet is far from “glacial” – there is underfloor heating throughout, heated towel rails in the bathrooms, and an open log fire.

Some of these problems could have been easily remedied during your stay if we had been made aware of your concerns at the time. We are glad that you found Eridan comfortable, with beautiful views and spotlessly clean, and we hope to be able to welcome you back in the future.

“Fabulous views over Samoens and the mountains”
Reviewed 27 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

We've stayed in Samoens several times and this chalet was by far the best. The kitchen was a good size and well equipped. Comfortable settees in the living room. The terrace off the master bedroom had excellent views. The apartment is spacious with parking outside the front door. There was lots to do in the village as it was a festival week. The park, lake, and outdoor pool are just a walk away. The walk from the village is uphill but that is what you'd expect in the Alps. The owners were very accommodating.
