The previous review sums up most of what I would have said. The chalet was fab, staff amazing, nothing too much trouble. They were always at hand if needed. Great ski hire and due to it being In house meant you could always change them if not happy. A friend of ours who skis several times a year said they were the best skis he had had. We hope to return as don't think we would get the same service anywhere else. Thank you once again for a brilliant holiday.

Room Tip: The quietest rooms are at the far ends of the two floors but due to wooden floorboards you can still...

Just returned from an amazing week at Chalet Giffre. We were a party of 18 (8 adults & 10 children) so we took sole occupancy of the chalet. Darren (David!) was very helpful from the beginning of my initial enquiry right up to the last day of our holiday.
Dale met us at Geneva with no problem. We were met at the chalet by Leane, Megan & Charlotte with a very welcome tea/coffee & cakes. Dale had all our skis & boots ready, & was very helpful with fitting all of us with the right boots & helmets. Excellent quality Skis & boots with no hassle (well worth renting direct with chalet). Our ski passes were collected for us too!
Bedrooms are great & are all different. The kids all shared with their friends & adults had our own rooms (ours had a great power shower).
Lounge & kitchen are comfortable with lovely log fire. English TV & WiFi available.
Lifts to & from the slopes were all very organised (even though there were 18 of us!). A quick phone call to the chalet & Dale or Darren were at the bottom of the slopes to pick us up & help with the skis! Much appreciated!
Back at the chalet we had fresh cakes, tea & coffee. Very welcome after a days skiing!
Kids had their dinner 630/7pm., leaving the adults to have a relaxed 3 course evening meal at 8pm. Lovely food (we ate & drank far too much!). Always plenty of wine, beer & soft drinks. An honesty bar is also in the chalet for anything extra.
Cooked breakfast, cereals, toast etc each day (Tuesday is chalet girls day off but we helped ourselves to breakfast)
The Grand Massif skiing is excellent for both beginner & advanced. Plently of green runs for the kids to enjoy (the 5km Marvel green run going into Morillon was a firm favourite with the kids). A few of us did the 14km Cascades run which is well worth doing. Beautiful views.
We were very lucky with the weather & snow conditions. Fantastic blue skys & fresh snow the beginning of the week, & a fresh fall of snow for the second part of the week.
We tended to take the lift from Vercland in the morning which was quieter than the main Samoens Telecabin, but took you to the main area for ski lessons & to pick up the Express.
We arranged ski lessons for the kids with ESF as we booked too late to use the local ski school ZigZag. We would not choose ESF again as the majority of the lesson is spoken in French as most of the pupils are French. Saying this, the kids all learnt to ski & received their awards at the end of the week!
In the words of the kids "this was the best holday EVER!"
Thank you Darren, Dale, Megan, Leane & Charlotte! Hope to see you next year!

Date of travel : 1st to 8th Feb 2014
Group : 3 couples and 2 sharing a twin
Travel from : 6 from Leeds, 2 from Gatwick
We are a group of friends that holiday every year in the snow. We are roughly 1/2 and 1/2 skiers and boarders.

Booking
David was very easy to deal with and helpful in the booking of the rooms. Even though I varied the numbers once or twice, David was very patient and helpful.
The chalet's web site was useful and informative and gave a true representation of the chalet.

The town and Chalet
It's about 1 hour from Geneva and we were picked up on time by Dale at the airport.
The chalet is in a good location only a short walk from town where there's an abundance of shops, bars and restaurants.
Samoens is a real gem, prettier and much less commercialised than the big resorts.
We were on a fully catered basis and it's also open in the summer on a B&B basis

As it's much quieter, the slopes are much less crowded and you've got plenty of varied runs across the Grande Massif area. One run (Cascades) is 14.4Km long and well worth doing!
Flaine is well worth a visit with it's natural bowl, plenty of off-piste and served by several modern lifts and telecabins.
The atmosphere in the bars is also excellent.

The main Samoens Telecabin (Grand Massif Express or GME) is only a short 5-10 min walk away.
Alternatively, Sam and her team will drop you (and pick you up) at any of the main lifts at Samoens, Vercland or Les Morillon. The Vercland lift is a 60's egg that you've just got to ride for the experience (it also has a great Apres-Ski bar at the bottom) whilst the others are modern large telecabines.

The chalet is "upside down" with the kitchen, dining room and lounge on the top floor.
The lounge is very comfortable with obligatory log fire - really nice.
Most of the rooms are huge, unless you're two blokes and you get to share the much smaller twin room. However, they all have good en-suite facilities and everyone liked them. I was in the small twin and found it comfortable enough.

There's a small boot room which isn't really adequate for a chalet of this size but that's only a small complaint. As we had the small room it was difficult to find room to dry our gear.

From the photo, you can see the conservatory where you store your ski's and boards. It's also a great place to boot up and de-boot rather than in a windowless room like we've had before.

So, the chalet and location was great but what really makes the difference are the staff.
Dale, Sam, Leane, Megan and Charlotte just couldn't do enough for us. Nothing was too much trouble. They also had some good recommendations for bars and restaurants.
We followed their advice on piste selection when the snow came down heavy and visibility was poor, which turned out to be spot on advice.

The food was excellent and varied. Even when the chalet was full for the last 3 days, the service and quality was maintained.
The week after ours had been booked by a party that had 7 or 8 kids. Sam and her team genuinely seemed to be looking forward to it that shows they know what they're doing. Apparently, families with kids book regularly.

Finally, Chalet Giffre can also rent you your gear. The feedback from our guys was that it was first class for quality and convenience. As it's all stored on-site (or brought in), fitting and storage is all done at the Chalet. I have my own gear so can't really comments but the guys that did hire were very satisfied.

Room Tip: The room at the very top can be a little noisy as it's above the lounge - depends on the guests...

A little late in sharing this review but anyhow, here goes. We spent our first Christmas in Chalet Giffre and Samoens this year (December 2013) and had an absolutely amazing holiday/trip. The chalet experience was top class - this was solely down to Sam, Dale and their team. The hospitality, exceptional food, good company (you know who you are), comfort and extra touches really made the trip for us. I would definitely recommend Chalet Giffre to my friends and family...We also hope to be back again soon.

Room Tip: Though, the room above the kitchen/living area is a lovely room in itself - it is difficult to get a...

This was our 3rd visit to Chalet Giffre as we have always had a great welcome from Sam & her team. They work cheerfully hard to make our stay a pleasure especially the food at Christmas was perfect. On Christmas morning we heard on of Santa's little helpers crashing about to leave a stocking filled with gifts tailored for each of us; red wine for me how did Santa know?
Samoens is pretty low but that virtually guarantees access from Geneva. It is a working French town with markets, bakeries too many to count and friendly locals. Spoilt for choice on the selection of a restaurant on the girls night off but they are all good. The bars are also more local than apres ski but I'm happy with that.
We tried to book for a short trip later in February but fully booked but hey there is always next Christmas.

It's with great reluctance I write this as I know it will mean we will suffer in the long run due to limited availability!! After 20+years of skiing we've finally found a chalet and ski area we know we will return to many times, I've never understood people who return to the same place year after year when there are so many other pistes, so many chalets and/or hotels to experience until now. After suffering the last 4-5 years in Austrian 4* / 5* hotels where the owners appear at best to tolerate us Brits, it's been wonderful to return to the French slopes and the hospitality of a well run chalet. From contacting David via email to enquire about availability to meeting Dale, Sam and the girls I just knew we were in good hands and had chosen the right place.

The chalet has comfortable bedrooms that are only needed for sleeping in, a very cosy living area with log burner, satellite TV, selection of DVDs and books and games available. Breakfast was good and arranged to be served at a time to suit - selection of cooked breakfast (croque madames / scrambled eggs /poached eggs different each morning) cereals, yogurts, fresh French bread and jams. Packed lunch available if needed (also good but mountain restaurants seem reasonably priced too) afternoon tea and cakes waiting for your return from the slopes and then a 3 course meal later in the evening, our package included wine and beer during the evening meal. The food was really good home-style cooking and the hosts very flexible if the menu is not quite to your liking.

Ski hire was sorted out through the chalet and was ready for us on arrival.

Lifts to and from the slopes to the Chalet were available most of the time or the 'blue' bus stopped just outside the chalet.

Lovely little village to explore.

The ski area of Flaine is within a 10-20 mins of ski-lifts (although this seemed to be packed full of '2nd week' skiers no longer needing lessons and happy to throw themselves down the mountains at any speed and not with much style). Much preferred the better maintained runs down to Les Carroz and Morillon, that appear to attract of more experienced, less manic type of skier!

If you're looking for a ski chalet that ticks all the boxes this is it - just don't book the week we want it please :)

Room Tip: Depends what you need - pictures of rooms available on their website, but you will not spend too muc...

This is the perfect place to stay for groups of friends or families. Clean, comfortable, great food, but what really makes this the ideal venue for your ski holiday is the girls and Dale who cannot do enough to help. Need a pack up? Need a lift to the caw car? Need a coffee? Just ask and the girls do it with a smile and laugh. Perfect service!!
