“Standard fare .....”
Reviewed 22 February 2014

Having read the reviews only after I had booked, I must say that I was apprehensive regarding the standard of accommodation. We have stayed many times in Samoens and tried different apartments, this was standard for the area. The residence is on the outskirts of the village and we walked to local restaurants frequently and it was easy. There is underground parking which is a bonus when it is snowing and your car is hidden underneath a mound when you get up in the morning ! There are no frills in the apartments and a bit more thought in this matter would go a long way to making the place welcoming. We self-catered mostly and a double ring and microwave was just adequate. An oven is necessary but not provided. The beds are uncomfortable and this would be my major gripe - though there again this is not unusual in this type of property. The indoor swimming pool is tiny but it was warm and clean. We took the option of Wifi in apt and this worked well. Many people sat in the foyer each evening and used the free Wifi. The staff were helpful and on the Sunday evening there was an introductory talk in French about the residence and its rules and the resort in general followed by a glass of wine and nibbles. This was a nice touch. If the beds were comfortable then I would return.

The hotel is large and in a quiet suburb a bit too far to walk to town (although there are ski regular free ski buses). The apartments are OK, but the sofa beds are incredibly uncomfortable.

The apartment has no oven, but a dishwasher? you can borrow (free) a small microwave sized oven from reception. If you can catch reception open. It is open from 5 till 7.30, which seems ok, but if you ski, the resorts closes around 5.30 you then have to queue with thousands of other skiers to get the gondola back to town, then more queuing for the ski bus, then a short walk of around 300m from the bustop through the hotel underground car park into the (non heated) ski locker room. you are not allowed ski boots in the hotel. By the time you have done this, got to your room, and out of your ski gear, you dont have much time to get to reception.

We booked here as it looked a nice town, and it is, although we only visited once on a very snowy day, as in the evening it was too far to walk, after we had skied all day. The hotel was chosen as it had a pool, and a family room.

The pool is very small, and on the chilly side. The kids normally don't notice, but here they stayed in for 5 minutes, and never went again. There is a small sauna, but on the day we went to the pool, I think everyone else in the hotel was squeezed in the sauna.

The large family room has free Wifi, a fire, and 2 pool tables. The room is large and was cold (it was below 10c outside) as the fire is lit at when reception opens, and then is left to die and is normally out by about 8 o clock. Don't go thinking you will sit by the fire.

The rooms were warm and quiet, the bus service was good, and the gondola to the slopes very efficient.

I'm not sure if it was just our apartment, but there were no cups or mugs. There were some espresso cups, which we used to have 8 cups of tea for breakfast! Take some mugs.

It was OK, we paid around £500 in half term feb for 2 adults 2 children, we would go back but the price would have to be a lot less £300?

Room Tip: We had the smallest studio, and it was fine for 2 adults and 2 children at 25m2 which is quite a bit...

The Grand Tetras is a large complex of flats within walking distance of Samoens centre and just about within walking distance of the main ski lift.
Our two bedroom flat was slightly larger than I expected, but this was the only good surprise. Everything about the place feels cheap and supplied with the minimum level of investment necessary. Wifi is available, but only in the reception area, and supplied at a glacial speed that I haven't experienced since the days of dial-up even when there are no other users. The long corridors are paved with bare lino with money saving light timers so short that you'll always have to fumble for a switch in the dark before you reach your residence.
There wasn't enough counter space in the kitchen to prepare food, there weren't enough shelves to store food. The dishwasher worked but was noisy, the basket to hold the cutlery was worn out so knives and teaspoons fell through. There wasn't enough lighting in the living room to comfortably read by after dark, we had to request additional lighting to see properly. There weren't enough power sockets for us to all recharge our devices, one socket was unusable, dangerously hanging out of the wall. The bathroom contained the sole mirror in the flat, but the towel dryer didn't work, the plug in the bath didn't fit properly so you couldn't quite take a bath.
The maintenance guy was pleasant enough and sympathetic, but finding an additional standing light was all that he could do for us. Equally, the reception staff were pleasant but all they seemed to be authorised to do is collect payment and hand out sheets and meagre towels.
My overwhelming feeling was that this was a resort run by a large corporation based far away. Our flat was styled with all the flair and panache that you'd expect from a distant accountant counting each and every penny to save as much money as possible. The location is good, the underground parking is a bonus, but frankly there are better places available.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere.

Just spent a week at the Grand Tetras with my 3 grown up children and their partners. The place could be great but lots of little things let it down. There is a fireplace in the entrance lobby which would have been so welcoming on the Saturday we arrived but it wasn't lit. The long corridors have got the shortest time on their lights- need to sprint along if you don't wish to be in the dark. We had the largest apartment which could sleep 8 (there were 7 of us). The apartment was spacious but it was very poorly furnished. The large lounge area had a settee/bed and that was it.! Max 3 people could sit on it and it wasn't comfy. We all spent every evening sitting round the table on hard chairs with wonky legs that needed re gluing/nailing back together. The 2 double bedrooms had wardrobes but those sleeping in the twin bedroom and lounge had nowhere to put clothes even though lots of space for a wardrobe/chest of drawers/hooks - i hate living out of a suitcase. None of the bedrooms had a mirror - only one in bathroom, which caused a queue with 4 women wanting to makeup. There was very little info around - we had a fluent french speaker with us so it wasn't that we didn't understand - but we didn't discover until the last day that we could have rented an oven/grill which would have made some meal preparation easier. Mind you the 'extras' mounted up very quickly - taxes, bed linen and measly towels and the final straw was being charged for a car parking space that i was under the impression was included, all came to 137 euros.
