“Basic apartment with broken equipment”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 May 2013

We stayed in a 4 bedroom apartment for 10 people on the first floor in chalet 1, the building next to the main building that contains reception and spa. On the entrance level was a small kitchen, one bedroom, one bathroom and the living area with two sofa beds. Upstairs were three bedrooms, a toilet and a shower room.
Some of the plates, glasses and other equipment in the kitchen were dirty, so we had to wash some of it before using it. We cooked dinner most nights but the quality of the equipment (e.g. pans) was not good. There was a large dining table with room for all of us, but there wasn't much space around it, so it became quite cramped. The sofa beds seemed old and well used and hence uncomfortable. The radiator in the dining area worked well, and heated the living area. However the radiator in the bedroom on that same floor did not work so it was cold in that bedroom. The button for flushing the toilet was partly broken so you had to remember to push another button as well to stop the water from continue running after the container had been filled.
Upstairs were more flaws. At the toilet the light bulb was broken (we got a new one when asking at the reception). In one of the bedrooms the radiator could not be switched off so the room was constantly too warm, and in that same room the window was very high up near the ceiling and could therefore not be reached and opened. There did not seem to be any ventilation in the apartment, so we had to open the windows every morning and evening to get some fresh air. The bedrooms were very small with just enough space for beds but no other furniture. There was no space for open suitcases on the floor, so we had to unpack everything to the closet and keep the suitcases closed standing in a corner. Sheets for the beds were provided by the reception, however there were no duvets but just simple bed covers that had to be used instead of duvets.
It was just a short walk to one of the pistes that ran alongside the street. It was also possible to start skiing at the back of the building, but that was quite tricky if you are not experienced, so I found it better to walk along the street to the piste. When coming back in the afternoon there was a piste where you could turn off to a cul-de-sac that ended just behind the hotel but the end of that piste was steep and became very icy and difficult in the afternoon.
Overall this accomodation was a disappointment, I would not stay there again and not recommend it.

We had a party of 11 staying in a 4 bedroom chalet/apartment.
The bedrooms provided accommodation for 8, while 3 of our party we required to sleep in "put up" beds in the main living area.
The TripAdvisor reviews I have read pretty much accurately reflect the status of Les Balcons. This accommodation is 3 star at best. Our chalet/apartment was generally clean when we arrived, but the fixtures and fittings are getting tired, the bedrooms are pretty small, about average for a French ski resort.
The chalets are in no way luxury, they provide all the basic facilities that to require for a self catering skiing holiday.
Their location is about 10 minutes walk from the centre of VT.
On the question of ski in, ski out; it is possible to ski-out from the boot/locker room areas a down to the pistes. Ski-in is not possible, you can ski close to Les Balcons, but the final 50metres may be too challenging for some, and then you need to remote skis, walk down a bridge/gangway, and cross the road to Les Balcons, before negotiating the way down to the boot rooms.
Some of our party used the facilities of the swimming pool, spa and sauna, these do get busy at peak times, so beware, and don't expect a luxury spa/pool experience - because you won't get it!
Personally, I can't complain, because we were on a cheap deal from the UK, and we didn't pay a lot for a week in the chalet/apartment.
In summary, don't expect luxury, don't expect everything to be perfect, and Les Balcons will meet your expectations.
As for VT and the skiing, well we had a great week, with lots of snow (at Easter), modest queuing and good weather for more than 50% of the week. VT lacks alpine charm, isn't cheap, and seems to attract quite a few "skiers", who seem to be more untested in drinking rather than skiing. Would I go back - of course YES.

We stayed with 17 people in the big appartment. It was big enough for all of us and there were enough bathrooms. The place is a bit old and really needs a improvement. The kitchen is small but there the common room is very big with enough tables to eat together. The complex had a (Cold) swimmingpool and a tiny sauna (but not bad at all). There is a ski (but hard and not for beginners) in but no ski out. Do i recommend it...yes i think so.

Btw, under the complex is a very nice restaurant!

The only thing to say about this place is 'OLD'. Old hall way, kitchen, bathroom, beds, etc... There isn't even wifi/internet except at the reception area... that is in another building! Really?!?...
We took a 7p apartment for 4p so that no one had to sleep in the living room. Good thing is that you have a supermarket very close by and that you have a parking spot.

Chalet 3.
Firstly dirty, pubic hair/hair on bedding, even hair on the supposedly clean and marked sheets! No decent duvet covers which were clean. Appartment not been dusted, vacumed or cleaned by staff EVER (unless you pay the extra 60euro). So only ever cleaned by the previous resident! So who knows what is growing where. Dishes were lucky if they were licked clean. Never bathed my kids in the bath due to the dirty conditions. Meant to be a spa bath but would dare not switch it on for the black around the spa pieces! Therefore took showers with a hand held shower piece and no shower curtain. Only plus was the water was warm and had some pressure, unlike the pool side showers.
If they are wanting you to clean it they must leave basis cleaning products on site, rather than having to purchase it then spend a good hour trying to make it feel like a chalet rather than a poor hostel, which are still cleaner than this place! Didn't even tackle the balcony, which was covered in cigarette butts, rubbish and dirt, with no view!

Poor reception - no weather forecast, no information about anythingThe staff had no customer service. Looked like they hated their job, particularly one girl, who was just rude and should be kicked into touch. It is the hospitality trade, be hospitable! Never apologised or tried to fix things, just growled and shrugged shoulders while muttering under their breath to collegues whilst thinking they were out of ear shot!

Hardly a ski in ski out residence. Not possible for weak skiiers. We wont stay here again - better off at the bottom of the village in the Montana apartments. Lovely Chalet....

Also no internet access in the room - you had to go to reception to get thier Wifi and no English or any other language TV despite advertising HD cable TV.Television was all local stations with only CNN as English speaking option, that was after the technician re tuned the tv. He must have been the only pleasant member of staff.

So yeah, if that is your thing, go for it but I won't ever be taking my family back to Les Balcons.
Val thorens has many other beautiful places, so avoid this one with a barge poll.

Appalling, shoddy apartment, very poor soundproofing (could hear every word of neighbours), heating didn’t work one day took the management a day to fix without apology. No wi–fi anywhere. I would never go there again a complete rip off

Stayed in Chalet 3. Booked on Les Balcons Website.

I stayed in Les Balcons Val Thorens about 20 years ago when it was just built. They have not updated anything since, so the apartments are somewhat worn and torn.

We had 4/7 apartment for 6 people which worked out OK. The apartment is not large, but to Val T standards it is OK.

This is a 2-3 star place today, nothing more for sure.

Apartment was clean and everything worked.

Icky black stuff came out of the Jacuzzi, so we did not use that.

Good skiers can ski directly to the other side of the road of Chalet 3. It is a bit steep at the end but they do a good job of running the piste machines down that slope too.

Beginners can ski directly from the ski locker at the base of Chalet 3. Thats easy.

We went back for lunch several days during the week, since ski-in ski out was easy. That will save you a lot of money because most restaurants in the area are overpriced.

Whats not good?

Well, Val Thorens accomodation, food and everything else seems to be 20% above other French ski areas.
No internet in apartment. You have to go to reception and from 15-23 the speed is unbearably slow.
There is a local bar nearby. For some reason they play music most of the night that you can hear in your apartment. So ski a lot and you will sleep.

Restaurant Tip: By far the best restaurnant we found on the slopes is Chalet Deux Ours below the Boismint lift.

The snow in Val Thorens is probably the best in Europe if you are late in the season because of the altitude. The lift system must be close to the most efficient and profesional run system. It has a huge capacity but there are also a large number of people here. And the lift tickets are 20-30% more expensive compared to similar resorts. They have got a good thing and they know how to charge for it.

The crowd here is a lot more young people than a family resort. While the lift system people do an excellent job, I would say that the piste security have a real problem.

We saw drunk people skiing with vodka bottles in their hands...

There are a lot of skiers here who ski really, really fast, beyond their ability on densely populated blue runs filled with kids and beginners. They are endangering their themselves and other skiers, but they seem to be able to do what they want. There are always stupid and dangerous skiers around but there are a lot more of them in Val Thorens. I would strongly recommend families and beginners NOT to ski in Val Thorens in any of the Peak Season weeks.

That said, there are not a lot of places you can ski in 50cm powder at the end of March down from Cime Caron. Excellent.
