“Excellent hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2014

My wife and I have just been to the hotel for a short break snowboarding while the conditions are still good. Firstly the location was brilliant from the ski room you are ready to hit the pistes within 60 seconds, as for getting back you can get the very last chairlift of the day (so you maximise slope time) and ski right through the platteau and directly to the ski rooom, then you have 10 paces down to the room....... DONE !! NOt only is the location brilliant for the slopes bu you are absolutely smack bang in the middle of the town with both shopping centres less than 1 minute walk away, not to mention all the restaurants and creperie's that are scattered around. The hotel is simply cool with redisigned rooms, we had a privelage room which was extremely comfortable with a seperate room with sofa etc in it, gave us that other space to goto when needed, saying that the lobby is such a calm and relaxing placee to be you would not spend much time in the room, every evening we would spend in the lobby on one of the sumptuous sofas sipping hot choclait after hot choclait, one thing that was important for us was that we have noticed that mst Ski hotels have rooms that are too cold and lobbys that are so hot and stuffy you just dont want to be there, this is the exeption, the rooms were just right and the lobby temprature COZY just perfect. The room was clean and also followed the simple cool modern design of the rest of the hotel. The Spa is fantastic and the pool/wellness area a real treat at the end of any hard day on the slopes. Also very clean and tidy. Breakfast had all you would want or need and no skimping either, if something ran out it would be promptly replenished, from the braekfast room you look out across the main platteau and can see the day starting with people milling around and prepping for the day outside. The staff are very attentive and nothing is a problem, just ask and they do their best. We were lucky enough to be met by the manager Mr Antton Duhour, as good as a manager can be from the perspective of a client he did all he could to keep us happy and seemed very genuine with it too. This hotel is a cut above the rest, to anybody thinking Val Thoren this is the one, i would say go for it, you wont be disappointed, it make sthe whole holiday a pleasure from getting on and off the slopes, to the service, the pool, the food, the rooms, the great lobby and the staff...... go for it and if you get a chance try and say hello to Mr Duhour, do so he wont forget you !

Room Tip: The privelage room was great , just gave us a little more room to put stuff and a sofa to chill on

In this hotel the young and service minded staff really tries its best to get the customer feel welcome and "home". I spent one sunny Mars week skiing stayed at the hotel. Payed extra for breakfast. Payed no visit to the hotel's spa area though it was included in the room price.

To sum up the pros:
- large and airy room with a semi long hair full carpet (that was kept clean daily).
- beds match what one expect from a four star hotel
- a high standard french type breakfast buffet
- magnificent location in the village and for skiing as it is directly at the slope
- excellent spacious, functioning and clean ski/boot locker area
- a huge sun terrace that is divided nicely into different areas
- hotel guest get 20% off when hiring skies etc. from the shop by the hotel entrance.

The cons:
- rooms facing the village must stand the shouting of the lively nightlife people
- the wi-fi username and psw must be renewed at the reception daily
- the wi-fi is unstable and I had daily difficulties in the breakfast area
- the elevator seemed to irritate lot of customers. In a 4store building you waited often 3-5 minutes or more before it came. No intelligence in the elevator system or information as you wait on any floor.
- small details on the service /cleaning level do not immediately irritate but are a bit annoying

The over all impression is a hotel trying really hard to stand up to the fourth star and to have customers coming back. For people looking for something different the reception area is interesting. The staff sits by two oval tables that gives an open and familiar atmosphere. The interior design is modern including a three meter high desktop lamp and a very creative piece of art on the wall. On a ca. 2x3 meter uneven plastic canvas are tiny figures projected that climb the wall. (Artist Samuel Rousseau)

Room tips
Enjoy the view, silence and balcony (on a sunny day) when choosing a more expensive room towards the slopes.

We have jst come back from the hotel , my wife and 2 kids. The hotel is fantasic, the reovation is modern yet comfortable, the pool was beautiful and brillint for when the weather was bad and at the end of each day we spent about an hour nin there relaxing, the whole wellness area is great. The rooms are well appointed and just about big enough. We had a fantastic view overlooking the main plateau where the magic carpet pops you out in the centre of the resort. Breakfast was great and the dinner buffer amazing. The whole hotel is immaculate from the rooms to the lobby to the pool, even the ski room was always tidy and clean. Everything we asked for was done very quickly. The day before we departed we knew we had a late flight out of geneva and with 2 kids we wanted to the most of the day and get some boarding in during the morning and early PM. We realised that without a late checkout this would be hard with 2 kids and tantrums. We requested this the night before, on call was the manager Mr Antton Duhoor. with a smile and no feeling of being done a favour a whole room was allocated to us for the last day including bathroom , safe etc etc, this was granted until 16.00 which allowed us to enjoy the mountain until 15.00 almost a whole extra day. I understand that this was done on an avliability basis but knowing our position they could have esaliy charged a reduced rate for this but this was not on their aggenda. Annton was very pleased to help. I will definately go there again with the family. The location is as good as it gets, right in the middle of everything from the slopes which are 40 meters away to the shopping to the restaurants. the amazing thing is that even with its prime location noise was never an issue. IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT JUST GO THERE, you wont regret it !!!

Room Tip: Standard rooms are fine, on this type of holiday you just sleep there and the lobby is like a living...

We stayed at the hotel in Jan 14. The hotel was very nice and comfortable and the spa facility's were good too. However the food was a major let down. Not only was the service slow and inconsistent, the resturant also lacked atmospher. The food was poor and no choices given. Very small portions and very odd combinations of food. The fondue resturant however was very good! Breakfast was as you'd expect but often had to wait for you one cup of tea or coffee! Overall a nice hotel but not 4* quality food at all.

Our first time in Val Thorens for skiing. we were in Demi-pension. the breakfast was what you expected, full of choices. the Dinner menu was always prepared with a touch of taste. We even had lunch a few times, same quality and attentive service all the way through.
After a hard day of skiing, the spa was a welcome relaxation. Pool-dry sauna-steam room all delightful. Massages at the spa were top notch.
We will be back in January, its the low season and for us Canadians, we like to have room on the slopes.

Room Tip: Slope side rooms all have views on the hillside, its really nice.

This hotel I think has the best location in VT, very much ski in ski out, which for us is a must have.
I read the negative reviews before travelling and was a little worried, but the hotel was fine. The decor may not suit everyone though, its very modern.

We would visit again.

If you visited this Hotel in or prior to the 2012 ski season then you need to know that it has changed ownership. The beautiful wood interior has now been painted brown grey or black and could not be more incongruous with it's Alpine setting. We arrived with the intent of enjoying the demi-pension arrangement and indulging in the four course menu choices with amazing cheese and dessert selection as in previous years. All gone! You are now told you will eat the one appetiser, main and desert offered or leave the restaurant. We chose the latter and went on to the Fondue restaurant to discover that the demi-pension menu does not actually offer a fondue. I stay in five or six luxury hotels a month in my profession and I am not aware of one that claims to be four star status with such a poor service. Prisoners in the UK get better choice than this and do not have their cells painted dark brown. Also be aware that having paid your deposit the new company will take the balance of the payment from your credit card 14 days prior to you arriving without warning or receipt under the guise of "making it easier for you".
