We chose Val Thorens for it's high altitude as we travelled the week before Christmas and we weren't disappointed, there was so much snow it was almost unbelievable.
We chose Le Sherpa hotel as we wanted something a little special this time and it certainly was that. The rooms are lovely, with comfy beds, although we are glad we paid a little extra for the Superior rooms which gave us a larger room with a balcony with a great view.
The highlight for us was the bar/lounge area, it always had a fire going and plenty of space day and night to sit and have a drink or just play cards. It was expensive for drinks though but them the Alps are generally.

The food was top quality, I don't eat meat and they were always happy to adjust the menu to suit me and my fussy children. The staff at this hotel were just wonderful, nothing was too much trouble and they obviously took pride in there hotel, I think if helps with this being a family run hotel. We travelled under Crystal Holidays' "FINEST" I am not sure that this is the finest we have seen but for the money it was great.

Only 2 negative points - do not travel to this hotel if you are a beginner and like the idea of doorstep skiing, there is a tough blue run back to the hotel, or walk 15mins through the village with your skis, uphill!
Also, as the hotel is up a hill, the transfer coach can not get up it during the snowy days (or maybe anytime) so you have to drag you luggage up the hill from the coach when you get there and also on departure. Having to do this in the snow, at such a high altitude is a strain, much more so than skiing all day. This is the only reason that we will not return to this hotel, there are plenty of accommodation in Val Thorens which coaches can pull up outside but not this one and with 2 children and our own skis and boots, we have a lot of heavy luggage. It was a let down to be honest. If you travel light, don't worry but don't under estimate the stain of hauling suitcases in the snow at this height either.

Room Tip: We are glad we chose the superiour rooms!

we stayed last Christmas and the hotel and our Christmas were all and more that we hoped they would be. The lounges are beautifully furnished and cosy, the barman very good, the food in the restaurant great especially the cheese trolley which was laden with local cheeses which our waiter knew all about. The Christmas eve gala dinner was the special event it should be and enjoyed by all. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the hotel bootroom fine. The staff are to be commended on their excellent customer service and the pride they take in the running of the hotel. We travelled with Inghams and would highly recommend this hotel. The resort was fun especially Folie Douce the bar up the hill and the Christmas Eve torchlight descent and fireworks were magical

Room Tip: Any of the rooms with a balcony

I took my partner for her first ski holiday here, thinking that if she and her skis did not get on, then she could sit on our S facing balcony (extra cost with Crystal) read and drink wine!
This was my fifth stay at the Sherpa in the past 15 or so years, and the only ski accommodation I have returned to. For me, VT is a known quantity. Always good snow, a hotel with good food, decent facilities. and best of all, friendly, helpful staff.
Writing this I think I, or we, should go more than once every 3 years!

We, three friends, stayed in this hotel for one week in March 2011, ski holiday. We booked 2 single rooms and one double. The single rooms were really tiny single rooms, but clean. The breakfast was good and dinner (5 courses) very good with a choice of excellent wines. After dinner you could make use of the large, comfortable lounge. Friendly staff. The south / west facing terrace was fantastic to end the end the skiing day. Sauna is good as well. This hotel is a ski in, ski out place. Just 10 meters walk to the ski path that brings you to the slope.

We stayed there for a ski week. Location is OK. It's not a ski-in-ski-out place, but slopes, are close enough - 2-3 minutes walking.
the room was nice, it had a double bed and a bunk bed, although we were only the two of us. The bunk bed took part of the space, so it wasn't very roomy, but we used is to spread our stuff. I wouldn't recommend it for 4 people. It would be pretty crowded for 4, even if 2 of them are kids.
Lounge and bar area are very spacious with a few rooms, and different decor, so you can find your corner to sit, play, drink, read, or use your electronics. There is free WIFI in the lounge, not in the rooms.
We had all our breakfasts and dinners at the hotel, as part of the deal. Food was good!!
The staff was friendly and helpful.
Ski room, a bit too crowded at rush hours, mostly in the mornings, when everybody goes out, approximately at the same time.No boot heating.
Sauna and jacuzzi where very appreciated, after a ski day.
Car park, a few minutes walk from the hotel. You download your language at the entrance, and drive to the parking to leave the car. There are a few places at the hotel entrance, but the reception asked us not to leave the car there.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay very much, and would love to come back

We spent 4 days in the hotel. We dined in hotel restaurant only once.
It was total disaster. We had to wait for menu 15 minutes, my partner ordered medium rare steak with recomended mushroom sauce. When waiter brought steak he mentioned that sauce got burned so he can bring home made butter with herbs or waited 5 more minutes for sauce. Partner agreed with butter as he did not want to let his steak got cold. Waiter brought piece of butter absolutely frozen (directly from freezer)! It was not melting at all!. When he started to eat steak - it was rare, not medium rare.
Other "funny" thing was that waiter took little bread from next empty table (where it was already prepared on plates) and slide it to our plates.
Finally we paid only for my food (not for steak).

Other problem was with the breakfast. For Michelling guide recommended hotel I would expect bfast more with imagination. 2 types of cheese and one type of ham everyday the same can be expected in cheap pension, but not in 250euro/night hotel. Other problem was that at 7:45am when bfast should start there was everyday something missing - once hot water, then hot buffet, next day bowls for egg, next day eggs, etc.

Hotel service was ok, but not perfect - as only 4 nights customers we did not have bath robes on room, as we stayed till sunday (not saturday as most of the clients) we were disturbed on saturday afternoon with maid which needed to hang the clean curtains (obviously they wash them every saturday, no matter if you stay there longer).

Other services were good - the best was greeting and providing the basic information about slopes and hotel.

Dear Barkris,
We thank you for your stay in Le Sherpa and for your comment on it.
Most of our guests’ comments in Tripadvisor focus on the quality of our cooking. We hope to have the opportunity to demonstrate it to you at another occasion. When it comes to our rooms, they are equipped with bathrobes. In case the chamber made forgot them in your room, we are happy to give them to you on request.
Kind regards
