“Great hotel, super ski area!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2013

Good place to stay.
If location is important, this hotel is fantastic!
The hotel itself offers a good standard of accommodation. The staff are friendly and helpful.
Bedrooms
The room we had was reasonably sized for an alpine hotel. It was clean, had enough drying space (important!) and had a good sized bath. The temperature of the room was just right, not too hot or cold. It also had a choice of pillows.
All bedrooms in the hotel face the piste. This means that they are quiet at night, you should not hear late night partiers returning to their own dens. The only noise is the 7am pistie beater doing the first run of the morning.
Food
Breakfast is simple; continental plus either fry or boil your own egg. Coffee is good and orange juice of a reasonable standard –not freshly squeezed.
Evening meal is good. Five courses starting with a large tureen of soup. The starters and main course were not fancy, but well presented and varied. The cheese course and deserts were from the buffet table, both offered a very good choice.
Every Thursday is Fondue evening, you have the choice of either meat or cheese. We went for the cheese option and found it to be really good.
Service in the restaurant is good, having a buffet option for cheese and desert certainly helps.
Some reviews moan about the vegetarian option. My wife does not eat red meat. The hotel catered very well for her offering fishy options at all meals.
Drinks
Both wine and bar prices are very good for alpine accommodation. Good local wine costs from 15 Euro a bottle and a pint of Kronenberg 1664 was 5 Euro. This is half the price of similar hotels in the area.
I recommend ordering a cocktail from the bar, these are freshly made and of very good quality.

Overall, for the price, this is a great place to stay.
Last year we stayed in the 3 Valleys hotel. Not a bad place, but really pricy (bit of a rip off for beer and wine), very noisy at night and what a terrible afternoon treck from the piste.

Area
The skiing is fantastic. Go for a 3 Valleys pass as it is easy to find yourself crossing the border. All resorts are great. Due to the size, queues are minimal, even at half term times. For an excellent lunch time option go to Les Menuires and the restaurant at the bottom of the Granges lift –fantastic onion soup!!

We stayed in this hotel for one week. Before arrival, the staff was very helpful and attentive, they responded to every e-mail very promptly. After arrival, check in was fast, and in general staff was very friendly.

Rooms: they are quite small, but adequate to have a place to have rest after the whole day of skiing. They are clean and most of them have balconies.

Food: separate dishes are ok, although lacking taste. Soups are watery and lack any spices. Combination of separate dishes into evening menu is rather random (bean soup (cream, btw everything seems to be blended...), tuna quiche (very nice), lamb curry (?)), And sometimes strange tastes (vanilla potato puree!!!). Puddings are great though, so be prepared to out on weight! Breakfasts are very limited in choice - same cheese, same ham, same stuff every day...

Location: great ski in and ski out, and very close to the city centre!

Other comments: although the hotel was very accommodating towards children, there is a lot to be improved to be truly child friendly place. Baby cot was brought from the basement, so had a smell of dump. We we moved to another table in the corner of the restaurant so three children (aged 2-5) could play on the sofas close by, but the bar tender was then complaining they make too much noise (being children...). One day we left some toys on the table in the lobby (in a view, close to our restaurant table) as the planes that boys painted were drying out. The bartender threw this away without even asking, and when asked, he said we should have cleaned ourselves! Well...I would have expected that knowing we are the only people with small children who sat at that particular table (he served champagne to it 10 min before), he could have asked us, or remarked on it to us, and not throw away toys, and when we asked I would not expect a hotel staff to talk back at me...anyways, after the intervention of a manager, we we offered free drinks to make up (although he whole situation could have been easily avoided in the first place). Also, when you have small children, do not expect to be served first. That would be my logic - give food to people with noisy children to get rid of them quicker :))), but in this place you gave to wait, and also expect that if a waiter comes with a pot of hot boiling soup, it will be served to the table over the head of your little wiggly one :(((

Overall, good value for mine, but could be better for a family establishment.

This time we organised the trip ourselves, and found the hotel very helpful in the booking, and then with our additional requests ie for a reserved garage space. When we arrived they were very accommodating in getting adjacent rooms although we had booked separately from our daughter.
The rooms are the same - clean, comfortable. The food I thought was perhaps better than last year, and again plenty. The waitress was great, a real credit to the hotel. VT had dumps of snow before & during our stay so skiing was brilliant & varied.

Room Tip: Not sure there are any bad rooms, lower down (1/2 floors) you are close to the ski room but further...

Overall we had an excellent stay at Val Chaviere. It is very good value for money for ski holidays. The Three Valleys has a reputation for being one of the best ski areas in the world and it certainly did not disappoint.

Rooms

Very small but clean. Separate toilet and shower/bathroom. The bathroom facilities looked to be fairly new and in good condition. We had a room with a balcony facing the slopes which was lovely. Perfect positioning for the Monday night fireworks too. Sometimes we found the room a bit cold on an evening and were unable to increase the temperature of the radiator.

Food

Breakfast is a small buffet with a limited selection of food. Evevning meal is a 5 course meal which was of good quality. I am a vegetarian however and was aware that the hotel did not offer an alternative meat free main course. The was largely fine as I was able to eat most of the other courses on offer.

Other

The hotel location could not be better for access to the village and for ski in/ski out. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, in particular the waitress who served us every evening. There is a ski locker (enough space for 2 sets of skis per room). There isn't space for boots but we were happy to take our own boots back to our room. The lift, as mentioned in other reviews is very slow and small. It did break down one day during our visit but was fixed the day after. WiFi is available in the bar and lobby area but it does not work in the hotel rooms. Breakfast was available at 5am on 'Departure Saturday' which was useful for anyone catching an early flight home.

Room Tip: Room facing the slopes.

stayed here from 12-19 january 2013. we arrived at nearly 10pm on the first night and were amazed when we were told that the restaurant had stayed open for us and our 5 course dinner would be served when we were ready!
the hotel is centrally located, right on the piste to allow easy ski/board in and out, its also really easy to access all of the other amenities VT has to offer.
staff can't help you enough, always smiling and polite.
food, although not perhaps what i would choose from a menu, is very good quality and there is certainly plenty of it. we struggled to finish the 5 courses!
thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend to anyone!

My Husband and I stayed here between Saturday 12th-19th January 2013.

Our first impressions of this hotel were good. Check in was fast and the receptionist was very friendly and helpful. We were offered a family room on level 4, below the restaurant. This was roomy and clean, but had no balcony. We asked to see another room with a balcony, but this was rather smaller in comparison, although also a family room. We therefore kept the first room we were offered. This had a double bed and was comfortable.

We went to Dinner on our first day in the hotel. We were very disappointed. It was a set menu, so we had no choice. The first course, soup, was watery and tasteless. The main course, penne pasta and meatballs, was equally unimpressive and very sparse. There was a cheese board brought to our table as the fourth course. This would have been nice, however, there were no crackers to go with it so we had to ask for some bread. This cheeseboard was then passed onto another table. Also to mention is that there is no option for vegetarians at all. In short, you get little choice and can not be a fussy eater at all. I would like to add that I am not a fussy eater, although my Husband is vegetarian.

We did try Dinner the next day but, after being given soup which I can only compare with dish water, we walked out. This was also because we were so hungry and, having seen the next course of salad being served, which was tiny, and as there were only 3 waitresses serving the whole restaurant, we decided not to bother and to get something from the supermarket instead. We then did not eat Dinner again in the hotel as we preferred to eat out for better food.

Breakfast was very basic, but adequate.

On a good note, the location of the hotel is great and there are so many slopes to choose from with a 3 Valley pass.

We are both boarders. The lockers provided are only ski brackets and not designed for snowboards. We took our boards to our room rather than risk them get damaged.

We would love to return to Val Thorens, but would definitely not return to this hotel.

The Crystal rep, John, was nice and helpful so we would travel with Crystal again.

Room Tip: Do not get a room under the Dining room. All you can hear is the scraping of chairs during meal tim...

I stayed over Christmas 2012 (22nd to 29th) December. The snow conditions were superb, lots of it and still snowing - really christmassy. It took us a few days to settle into the hotel - the room felt a bit small and bare, But once we'd settled in with our stuff it felt cosier. It had huge windows, a balcony and great views of the mountains. The bathroom was spacious, modern and clean. The hotel lounges and dining room are little bit dated but cosy . To be honest i didn't want to leave when the week was over :( They don't do christmas like we do in the UK and I was surprised by the minimal lights and decorations, but you've got the snow and mountains! Food in the hotel was fine. I'm quite fussy but there was always a course that I liked and I got addicted to the cheese board!!! On christmas day the families children served us canapes before dinner it was a lovely touch. I've stayed at la Sherpa where the food is amazing (but le Sherpa hotel is a lot more expensive) and val Chavière is in a much better location than la Sherpa. I would definitely return to val Chavière - love Val Thorens this my fourth visit. Overall a great stay at Val Chavière :)
