Had a short ski break in December 2013. The hotel is a typical mid-market ski hotel. The hotel was clean and functional. There are apartments on top of the hotel - they are a different business. The hotel is the boxy building below.

The TV had a load of channels including two BBC channels. The en-suite bathrooms have been refitted recently and there was plenty of hot water. Staff were terrific and very friendly. We booked through the central Val Thorens reservation service and that worked efficiently.

Breakfast was a buffet with cereals, croissants, cold meats, cheese, fruit juice, eggs, coffee, tea etc. Dinner in the hotel was a set menu which good every night. Half board seems good value whether or not you eat in every night.

Best thing about the hotel though is the location. Right on the slopes!

I hope to return and wouldn't hesitate to book Val Chaviere again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the slopes.

we have just had a week in Val Chaviere and it was pretty good, better than some reviews suggeasted that it may be.
The hotel has a dated 1970's interior, clean and tidy with very professional and helpful staff.
The rooms are ok ; a bit basic with en suites.
Dinner in the evening was a 5 course affair, soup, salad type course, meat or fish, buffet sweets and cheese. I think the food was not great but just about ok. They should serve just 2 or 3 courses and make them better.
Drinks in the hotel were very good value and the position is great with true ski in and out facilities. Skiing in the resort was the best I have ever seen in the world.

Great ski hotel, but.... lacks soul and attention to details :(

The hotel is quite clean and well positioned. The rooms are neither large nor small, but overall quite functional. So why didn't i like it? It lacks soul and definitely attention to details. If you are looking for a bed to sleep in, this hotel is absolutely great, but if you plan to spend some time there, you may wish to keep looking around, especially if you do not speak french... The hotel staff is very friendly (but not all) and speak english, but not very helpful. I was not expecting a concierge, but would have been nice to get some advise upon settling in!

We had a problem with the hotel that ruined it for us. Children are generally welcome everywhere but somewhat expected to be on their best behaviour... a tick and immediately they are frowned upon! In our case it was books and toys that made it to the bin whilst we moved from the aperitif to the dinner table, to be told by the waited that "we should clean after our children..." Seriously? That specific comment got me a "physical threat" from one of the staff that wanted to "teach me a lesson"... obviously he did not speak english but him ponding a fist in its hand did not seem a very polite sign...

Dinner is quite superficial. On the first day we were welcomed by a large metal bowl of leafy spinach soup... would not know if it tasted any good as presentation did it for me. Food was generally good but no choices as they offer in ski resorts across Italy or Austria.

Would recommend to travellers on a budget looking for mid-range accommodation... but if you do not speak frech or travel with children, you may want to check what the market offers.

Hotel staff very helpful and friendly, they had no double rooms when we arrived but quickly assigned us a twin room and had staff come by within about 15 mins and convert to twin to a double. Hotel very clean and rooms cleaned daily.

Rooms are a little dated but still bright with big windows, clean and functional. Rooms had a good size wardrobe and space to store 2 cases ( which can be rare in done ski hotels) bathroom had a seperate toilet which had no window and ventilation was minimal!!! Location of hotel was perfect, ski straight out of ski locker room all the way to chairlifts etc. some rooms have balcony and view of pistes :). Rooms nice temp, not to hot not to cold

Food in restaurant was excellent, 5 courses inc soup, salad dish, main course ( different every night) cheese course and buffet dessert. You certainly won't go hungry. no choice with main course but one of out party doesnt eat fish and on the evening of fish spoke to staff ( only 30 mins before dinner served) and staff arrange a different main course with no fuss. If vegetarian or special dietary requirement would contact hotel before booking just in case! Breakfast consists of classic continental breakfast with yogurts fruit cereal bread cheese and ham, pastries and cakes. Also able to cook eggs yourself on griddle or boiling water.

Val thorens fantastic ski areas for everyone.

This has to be best hotel we haves stayed In Skiing in Europe, should be starred higher than 3 but I guess slightly dated rooms may bring it down a little.

Definately recommend to couples, groups or families a like :)

HOTEL
Hotel Le Val Chaviere has a great location in the quieter part of Val Thorens with access directly onto the piste and only 5 minutes walk to the pedestrian part of the town which has lots of shops. The hotel does have a ski storage room but no ski boot room, at first this was slightly disappointing but by the end of the week we thought it was an advantage as you could then put your ski boots on in the comfort of your own bedroom and indeed take them off in the comfort of the balcony whilst drinking a cold beer.
ROOM
The room we had was number 408 and had two single beds pushed together. There is a flat screen T.V. in the room with bathroom and separate lavatory. The bathroom has a bath with power shower over and large sink area. The room had a balcony facing the slopes and I think it is better to have a room on the higher levels from the view perspective. Also rooms with uneven numbers (on the opposite side of the corridor) would have had a street view. The beds were comfortable although they did have a memory foam mattress which I personally dislike so found myself sleeping (very well) on top of the duvet with the bedspread and blanket on top of me. There was enough storage space for two of us in the room, however we would have benefitted from taking extra coat hangers. There was a security safe.
FOOD
The food consisted of a 5 course evening meal: - soup, starter course, main course, cheese, and then dessert. This was too much for me so I had the soup the starter, and cheese. My husband had 5 courses every night. The food was nice enough but nothing special. The kitchen did a different 5 course meal each night and all guests had the same menu every night.
GENERAL
There is a Carrefour small supermarket literally across the road for supplies. We hired our skis etc from ValTho Sport which is located next door but one to the hotel. I would recommend you get your equipment and lift pass when you get there as I think it is considerably more cost effective. Our party of four consisted of ages 35 – 45 (made up of two couples). The bar we liked best was West Face it is quite contemporary and did a good range of cocktails and après ski drinks. Throughout the resort a pint of lager ranged in price from 5 - 8 Euros. A glass of wine ranged from 2.50 Euros to 7 Euros, a cocktail was 7 – 9 Euros. Up the mountains food ranged in price also. A burger and chips cost in the region of 10 – 30 Euros, Soup ranged from 6 – 12 Euros. Overall I think Val Thorens and the Three Valley Ski area is marvellous.

We've skied quite a lot over the last 20 years or so, both Europe and USA and we have to say this is the best hotel we've found so far. Location is excellent, down to the ski locker room on the ground floor, and ski from the door! It is also well positioned within Val Thorens with easy access to bars and shops.
The hotel is clean, warm, and the rooms are well appointed with modern tiled bathrooms and toilets. The rooms are not huge, but who wants to spend time in their bedrooms? They are more than adequate for a couple.
All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Marie was our waitress, and our party of four have never found a more friendly and efficient waitress in all our years at holiday hotels.
The selection and quality of food was very good. And as stated by other guests on this site, we were not ripped off by the bar prices, which we have certainly experienced at other hotels.
All in all, an excellent place to stay, and we certainly intend booking at this hotel in the future.

we had three nights here visiting our son who is working a season and he had booked us in here. we loved it! very much enjoyed the 5 course evening meals, all very efficiently and professionally served, and if you don't finish your bottle of wine, they put your room number on it and it comes back the next night, a lovely service! breakfast was good too, as others have said, do it yourself eggs, fruit, yogurts, toast, pastries, cereals, and again all very efficient and buffet style. the bar prices were very reasonable and there was just a lovely overall atmosphere about the place. our room was not large, but had a piste view, a bath and shower and bbc on the tv if you wanted to catch up with the news. great ski room downstairs for storage of kit and from there straight onto the slopes. would certainly recommend this hotel, charming and helpful reception staff too.
