“Chalet Maryse”
Reviewed 11 March 2013

Just returned from a week in the Inghams Chalet

We were a group of 9 adults, and the chalet was an ideal size for our group, we all thought that if 12 people would been there, the living/dining area in particular would have been very cramped.

Lets get the negatives out of the way first:-
1) there are a lot of stairs
2) not every room is ensuite
3) ski in/ski out is only really for confident experienced skiers

The positives
1) the highest chalet in Val Thorens so great views
2) 3 mins walk from bars/restaurants
3) 10 min walk to slopes
4) Our chalet girls Athene & Tershie, fed us well, and were friendly and helpful.
5) Ben our rep was great, organised restaurant bookings, ski lessons amongst other things on our behalf.
6) 3 vallees so very large ski area!

Room Tip: alll rooms very similar size, but room 3 had full en-suite and most space

We booked Chalet Maryse as a party of nine and it worked very well. Would be a bit of a squeeze, especially at dinner, for the full 12 people (six twin rooms) it is supposed to accommodate.
Only one room had full en suite (WC and shower) - a couple of others had their own shower but no WC, remainder had neither. This didn't bother us as we were all one party - might not be so keen if sharing the chalet with strangers. On the plus side there was one bath (as opposed to shower) which is always welcome after a day's skiing but not that common in ski accommodation.
We made good use of the indoor pool (although it is not very well heated) and the adjoining sauna (in theory it is 'on' from 4pm but this was a bit erratic). Both are shared with another chalet and the hotel in the same building.
As noted in a previous review, the chalet is high up in the building and there are a total of four flights of stairs between the lift and the chalet itself. Whether this is a problem depends on how fit you are.
The chalet is described as ski-in, ski-out but this is only realistic for pretty advanced skiers. However you can ski to within c100 metres of the building by taking a left hand road half way down the Plein Sud (blue) run. For access to the slopes, those of us who didn't want to use the 'ski out' from the boot room found the best way was to walk down about 250m towards the centre of the resort, bear right and just past the 'caisses' where you buy lift passes there is a short slope down towards the local lifts - this was fine for all but absolute beginners.
We did have a fantastic holiday overall and found the chalet, despite a few shortcomings, good value for money.

Room Tip: There is a near-identical chalet in the same complex which is not quite as high up - fewer stairs, t...

Booked this chalet last minute with Inghams and although we booked the small twin and the twin under the eaves without en-suite, we were expecting a 3.5* size chalet (and in some brochures it is a 4*) The position of the Chalet in Val Thorens is elevated on the edge, there are 94 steps up to the chalet using the lift and when the lift is out of action there are 153 steps and this is after a very steep walk from town. Ski out is very steep and was only attempted by the brave and experienced (quite fun if you enjoy this sort of thing!), ski in, well there isn't an easy one, you need to access a button lift (this is exclusively for competitors of slalom training or competition - so you need to persuade the operator, not always possible) then exit the steep button lift at the 4th pylon, jumping left then going across a peak and then down again a very steep hill to access the boot room (again great fun if you enjoy this sort of thing!). The Chalet is very cosy, our rooms were very basic, the beds are rather small and uncomfortable, there is no heating in the rooms or bathrooms, there are a few room heaters available but not sufficient for every room. The living room only seats 6 comfortably and 9 on uncomfortable squares. The fire in the living room cannot be lit, as there is a back draft, which covers the room with smoke, soot and hot ash (we are very experienced with fires and we were not able to solve the problem, without altering the chimney). The staff with Inghams were lovely, we enjoyed good food and good service from them. But sadly these Chalets are just in need of some maintenance, broken parts in dishwasher, no extra pillows when requested, no room keys, nowhere for the staff to put there hoover etc (so hallways always cluttered), broken heaters, broken plug for bath - makeshift one works. Possibly this chalet is ideal for a lesser number of people, using one of the rooms as a store room for staff or 12 people on a lower star rating. We had a brilliant holiday, as the snow was fantastic, we enjoyed the skiing challenges set by the Chalet, the company in the Chalet we had was great and the food was good. However, to choose this Chalet again, it would have to be at a reduced price again, otherwise the position (steps) and size indoors and the lack of comfort would have to be seriously considered.

Room Tip: All the rooms were basic, some were larger than others.
