“Best Surf Camp Ever!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2012 via mobile

We were fortunate to find such a gem! The camp is clean, comfortable and located in front of some perfect waves for all levels including beginners. Phil is very welcoming, Hugh is an awesome surf instructor and Steve/Stigs made up some great meals!
Personally, I was prepared for a "typical surf camp", Rise Up took it to the next level with all they had to offer. We hope to be back soon and are truly thankful for the experience.

Myself and a group of 8 other surfers enjoyed a week with Phil and his crew in Nicaragua. Our main objective was to surf, with possible small surf days being filled with trips into Leon, etc. Unlike a lot of the other reviews for Rise Up, we are all surfers with over 10years of experience. However, at the same time we were at camp there were beginners and the crew at Rise Up were able to accomodate all experience levels.

We were very pleased to have our week with Phil, as he is a former professional body-boarder who now mostly stand up surfs. He knows the waves of Northern Nicaragua very well and consistently put us in the best spot at the best time of day for waves. Conveniently, this was often right in front of where we stayed, the week we were there we had 4-6foot faces every day. We did travel to a nice point break for the first two days of the trip and had some great head high plus waves while surfing the point.

When we were either surfed out or the winds had gotten to the surf, we were able to take a tour through the local mangroves and then into Leon. For everyone this was one of the highlights of the trip, as the scenery was amazing and the interaction with the Nicaraguan people was great.

Phil and his crew were always very accomodating, whether it be fixing a broken light bulb in the room to cooking special meals according to different tastes or dietery requirements of the guests. Phil and his guys always had warm smiles on their faces and were eager to help with anything we asked for. We are all planning a trip back as soon as we can get there, as Rise Up took care of us and we would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone and go back again ourselves.

We stayed at Rise Up for a little more than a week and had an absolute blast. My girlfriend and I, both novice surfers, were truly impressed with the care Phil and everyone at the camp took to make us feel comfortable in the water. Typical day would be wake up early, surf, lounge, surf again, potentially take a day trip. My girlfriend probably had close to 25 hours of 1 on 1 surf instruction during the week we were there (again, really a testament to how much the staff is invested in your surfing and your stay). By the end of the week, I was getting up on waves and paddling out in some pretty decent-sized surf.
The house is about the most chill spot on planet earth. When the beer is flowing and sun shining, it doesn't seem like there could be a nicer place to sit out and read a book or listen to some music.
The whole trip has a pretty adventurous vibe to it and yet you live comfortably--borderline luxuriously. Also dollars and cents wise, Rise Up is pretty much a steal.
I can't rave enough about Rise Up, its superb owners and staff, and gorgeous, adventurous, relaxing Nicaragua.

We stayed at Rise up in mid-May and had an amazing time. We booked the learn to surf package and really enjoyed our week there, even though we had only surfed for a few hours total before this trip. I'm not too well-versed on quality of waves, but as a beginner there plenty right in front of the property for us to grab. We found that early mornings were best for us, and my husband continued to surf throughout the day while I hung out and read/ate/drank. What is really unique about rise up is the staff; they make you feel like you're staying with friends that you've known forever. Each of the guys are so different that there's always someone doing something to keep it entertaining in such an isolated area. The town of Leon is a short ride away, so if you're missing civilization it's not too far. We had a great time meeting up with Gemma from Greenpathways and were able to go volcano boarding, on a city tour with cultural and art museum stops and on an estuary trip (which were all really fun and interesting). The food is good and plentiful; I gained a few pounds over the week. We would go back in a heartbeat and felt really lucky to be able to experience such a special place.

Room Tip: The biggest piece of advice I have is to speak up if you know you want to do something in particular...

If you are on the fence about taking a surf vacation, jump off the fence now and go to Nicaragua!!! Five girlfriends and I did the Rise up Surf tour "learn to surf" package and each of us agreed it was a fantastically amazing experience. I have travelled all around the world to almost every contintent. I've done guided tours, self-guided and everything in between. This trip was definitely one of my top trips ever and I'm guessing will be hard to top . All of the positive reviews on this site are spot on....and the website delivers on everything they promise. To say they had great customer service almost devalues what they did for us. It felt like they invited us into their home and into their surfer world as friends, rather than as paying customers. They would do anything and everything to make us happy…their main goal was to ensure we had a good time, whether that be surfing, drinking, dancing, playing, resting, yoga, boating…whatever. Chef Steve's food was amazing, healthy and local and Hugh and Sebastian were fantastic surf/yoga instructors. Despite some initial bad luck we had with the weather (there was a hurricane off the coast), the entire team made sure we had a great time. The value you get for your money is unbelievable in Nicaragua, and as promised, practically everything you do, eat and drink is included....no surprises. We all came home with money in our pockets (despite our efforts to spend it). The hammocks were comfy, the beer was cold, the waves were amazing and all of that was topped only by the amazing friends we made while there. In addition, some of the money from the surf camp goes to fund greenpathway projects. We had the amazing opportunity to release 18 baby turtles one day, and the next day they released 300!! An amazing experience to say the least!

Amazing adventure, amazing place, amazing bargain, amazing people. No hesitation whatsoever to recommend this to anyone with an adventurous spirit!

My son and I stayed at Rise Up in mid August and scored overhead waves all week. The first three days at Puerto Sandino and the rest at the beach break and river mouth by the house. It was double overhead the first day at the point but got really good a little smaller(two feet overhead) when it lined up for super long rides. Although the waves were sick all week the best part of the trip was the beautiful desolate beach and the wonderful hosts. Phil and his crew are super chill and will make sure you are taken care of. It is also nice to know you are staying with an operation that really is in tune with the locals and is looking to be a positive influence in the community. If you are looking for great waves, very little to no crowds and a trip off the beaten path Rise Up is the spot. Thanks Rise Up and we will be back!

Rise Up is definitely the place to be. From the time we got there to the time we left all was taken care of. I went with my girlfriend and another surfer friend of mine. There were fun clean waves every single day, the only people in the line up were me my friend and four other heads that were staying at the camp and more than enough peaks for all of us to take off on. The swell was only big enough for us to go to sandino once and it was still awesome! The owner Phil is an extraordinary cook; his cook had just left to go travel elsewhere so he took up the job which turned out to be a real treat for us. I’m talkin’ gourmet [--], homemade mango chutneys and roasted red pepper Remoulade all that silly stuff to accent your deliciously marinated chicken or what ever it is you’re having. I can just imagine when he hires a chef that he holds them to high standards. A couple afternoons the winds turned onshore and although there were plenty of waves to be had we were off volcano boarding, chilling at his hostel in Leon, or ripping through the estuary with his boat captain. All activities not surfing were peripheral when I was booking this place but when I actually experienced them they far exceeded my expectations, principally volcano boarding and navigating the estuary by boat through literal tunnels of vegetation finally ending up on a deserted island beach for a surf session and some lunch. Yea yeeeaa.
A few other things worth mentioning: The staff are genuinely chill and fun to hang with. There was a beginner out in the water in some chest to head high surf and Hugh (staff) paid close attention and was always near him. I know when I first started surfing having some1 around always boosted my confidence. This is a place for beginners and experienced alike and what’s infinitely more important than anything I’ve mentioned thus far…No Crowd!!!!!!!!!!
Yea….I’d go back.
