We turned right on entering the pub and found ourselves in the bar rather than the restaurant ( nothing wrong with the restaurant - we like bars!). It was lovely - exactly what a country pub should look like. Massive open fire, beams, with tables and chairs that looked like they had been there when the pub was built!

The customers felt it was OK to put logs on the fire if it appeared to be dying down - that sort of pub!

The staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Due to the weather we enjoyed 3 lunches at the Oak and loved everyone of them. The salad dressing was to die for ( can I have the recipe please!!!).

If you like traditional country pubs that are snug, cosy and welcoming then this is for you! Go for a walk around the reservoir to build up an appetite and have lunch at the Royal Oak - you wont regret it!

Before reading on I would like to say that I have eaten here many times before and have loved the food and drink enormously. However, this experience was different. A group of 16 of us had just walked around Burrator before Christmas. It was cold and wet and we had 2 children with us. A large number for sure, but all we wanted was a drink as we had converged from many different places to catch up before Christmas. So we walked into the bar with the restaurant being full and the bar empty. Some ordered drinks and sat down. The waitress saw my 6 year old boy and 18 month old daughter and told us they couldn't be in the bar. I asked where else we could go and was unceremoniously told that we could go outside (in the cold and wet) whilst all the others were indoors. We asked for an explanation and merely got a repeat of the instruction - children are not allowed in the bar. I humbly suggest a review of this stance in the light of the fact the bar was empty and that it did you out of considerable business. (It is not against the law to have children in the bar - particularly as they were not in danger of being served or being bought alcohol). In the end we left with all of our friends and it put a taint on what has otherwise been a favourite venue up until now.

ordered beef burgers at £11 and received a beef burger, looked and tasted processed bulk bought with no extras, very thin, low quality burger. Chips were cheap frozen affair that needed a lot of ale (which was good!) to wash the flipping' monstrosity of a lunch down. We previously had had a fantastic ploughman's lunch there
