“Things that count so much”
Reviewed 2 May 2012

This agriturismo hotel is really situated awaw from Giardini Naxos and in the meantime is so close. It's only 10 minutes by car to Giardini. The rooms are really large and spacious. Views from rooms are also good. The grounds around are full of lemon and nut trees. Rooms are reasonably clean. In our room we had a shower with no door or curtain. I had to hold the showerhead with my hand, directing the water to my body, as otherwise, putting the shower head into it's holder will result in a flood in the bathroom. Breakfast is really poor. A boiled egg will put you back 50 cents, a slice of ham and cheese is 1 euro. On second day my wife went down for breakfast at 0815 and found almost nothing. Whatever finished was not replaced. Paying 100 euros a night for bb, is not that cheap.

Room Tip: Room 15 is very good.

To be disappointed, naturally you have to have some expectations. Sadly our expectations were built upon the Terrenia website and Trip Advisor and other comments (about all that is available for most folks). If you rely on the beautiful photos and the website for your information, you will feel as if you have experienced a scammer’s bait and switch.

The fact that the website is also in English is the worst of the illusions conjured by Terrenia as neither of the proprietors speaks English and if you don’t speak German or Italian you are out of luck. What appears so lovely, neat and well maintained online is in reality far from it. While the property is well maintained and tidy, as are the rooms, you won’t be living in an almond tree, and the grounds are better cared for than the guests.

The laundry list of minor irritations eventually overwhelms any of the charms that Terrenia might possess. In Terrenia’s words: All double bedrooms, are tastefully furnished in Sicilian style with great care over every detail. While we have no comments on the furnishings, we must clarify that very little care has been taken over even the simplest of details. The air conditioning, which was desperately needed, since the temperatures during the day ranged between 34-40 degrees, was placed below the mezzanine level, subjecting those above the air conditioner to punishing heat and sleepless nights. The sofa bed below is woefully inadequate and will not support normal sized adults with any level of comfort. At best, a night on the sofa will treat you to being slowly sucked into a central vortex of lumpy discomfort. The bare fibreboard floor upstairs is more comfortable. If, in your desperation to salvage the night, you might decide to read in bed, again, good luck. While Terrenia is kind enough to provide you with a table lamp, they neglect to provide you with a power source. Undergoing the Terrenia nightly weight loss program, it would be wise to have a constant source of cool water on hand, but this will be impossible since you have no refrigerator (a service which we had at all other Agritourismo’s in which we stayed in Sicily, even the three star ones.) and you won’t be able to buy water from the proprietors as the office is so infrequently open that you’ll be lucky (or unlucky) to check in in the first place. You can fight your children for one of the two plastic cups you are provided for the full length of your stay. We spoke with other guests and the problems are the same in other rooms.

The list goes on and on. The problems with hygiene, safety, comfort and services are many: none really serious but of the nature mentioned above. On vacation, who really need this?

As regards the owners, more than any other aspect, this is where Terrenia fails completly. Our family has travelled all over the world (with children and without) and we work in the travel sector. We have been in youth hostels in third world countries and 5 star hotels on the Riviera; we know the business. We have never encountered two people so ill suited to the job. The owners seem to display none of the requisite competences or behaviours for running a lodging and worst of all; they seem to take no pleasure in what they do. Rather than being the very reason for their business, as guests you are treated as an interruption of it. One owner is surlier than the other and the advice they provide is almost useless: in some cases it was just wrong. When we suggested a few cheap and easy ways in which the comfort and safety of the guests could be improved (while we were begging for a fan to move the hot air around in our room) we were treated with such incredible rudeness it beggars the mind.

Finally, on a personal note, we are animal lovers. We make special note of how poorly the animals on the property are treated. While you may not like your treatment as guests, the animals are far worse off. All of them appear to be malnourished to some extent, with perhaps the exception of the Siamese cat and the Puppy (yes, there are quite a few). The others fend for themselves as best they can it seems and all of them retreat to the pool in the afternoons in order to get water. If you’re feeling hot without air conditioning in your room in 40 degrees, think of these animals in their fur coats and no water.

We have never written a negative review of any B&B, Hotel, etc. before, as there seem to be enough negativity to go around but felt compelled in this case because Terrenia relies on disgruntled clients saying nothing.

There are many fine Agritourismos all over Sicily, ones where your family can stay in real comfort and safety and with owners that are happy that you’ve come to stay with them. Go there and enjoy every minute of this fantastic part of Italy. We’d suggest you find somewhere other than Terrenia if you want to enjoy your holiday.

Room Tip: Look for a room in Gardini Naxos or Taormina
