“Amazing Cultural and Culinary Experience in the Italian Countryside”
Reviewed 23 July 2015 for a stay in April 2015

My wife and I spent an unforgettable week at La Cucina Sabina, a casually elegant villa in the heart of the countryside outside of Rome. The week was filled with experiences that reflected the highlights of the region’s cuisine, history and architecture. Locals guided us to “cultural gems” that would have been almost impossible to find on our own. Our trepidation about being part of a group was dissolved as soon as we arrived on the gorgeous estate and interacted with the others participating in our weeklong program. The actual property has been recently renovated, with modernized guest rooms and a showcase kitchen, replete with brand new high-end appliances and a stunning view of the vineyards and hills in the countryside. It was a great base, close to important sites, yet very inviting as a relaxing and luxurious destination on its own.

The hosts, Mike, Giuseppe and Nanci speak excellent English (Mike is an American living in Italy and Giuseppe is an Italian who lived in America, an important distinction in that they can each contrast cultures in both countries). All three, along with the others on the team, were friendly, professional and demonstrated great care that each guest had a personalized and memorable experience.

Another initial concern I had was whether our cooking skills, particularly with Italian cuisine, were sufficiently advanced. That issue was addressed by the pace and style of the courses. The professional instructors who visited the villa to teach us were very inclusive and allowed participants of different levels to participate at their own pace. Some of the more skilled guests who seemed to have attended prior cooking schools were able to hone their skills while others were able to learn more through observing demonstrations, although everyone had the chance to help prepare the delicious regional cuisine. And the food was consistently excellent, with good variety in both styles and ingredients. The basics of making pasta, pizza and sauces was taught, as were more specialized dishes with vegetables, meat and seafood. Portions of food and the accompanying local wine were generous and led to really interesting and enjoyable dinner conversations.

I was pleasantly surprised by the trips to nearby cities, villages and farms. We travel extensively, almost always independently, and found the visits to have a more relaxed, flexible pace than we expected. Without exception, each visit exceeded our expectations and were places to which we would almost certainly have missed on our own. We have been to Italy many times, including to the Rome area, and we saw completely different sites than we had seen before. We visited both an ancient olive grove where fantastic olive oil is produced and a vineyard/winery that makes wines typical of the region. Some opportunities, like having a private visit to a castle (including a view of the private art collection) and a remarkable dinner at a private home overlooking the Rome skyline could not have happened any other way than through this program.

As you can tell from this review, we were thrilled to have booked the program at La Cucina Sabina. Anyone seeking the combination of a gorgeous country villa and an immersive experience in local food, wine and culture should share our feelings about this very special place in Italy.

“Best vacation of my life !”
Reviewed 7 July 2015 for a stay in April 2015

My wife and I travel a fair amount so I would describe us as "discerning travelers". With that said, I can tell you that the week we spent at La Cucina Sabina was everything we could have wanted in a vacation. Our room was luxurious and VERY comfortable. Though recently renovated and contemporary, the owners did not sacrifice any of the charm you would expect at a place like this. Our particular room had a balcony with a spectacular view of the countryside and in the mornings we would open the doors to take in the relaxing morning breeze.

I have never enjoyed vacations where I feel like I am merely along for the ride with the tour group. I never even felt remotely like that on this trip. No pressure to get to the next activity or meet some ridiculous schedule. That is not to say that we did not see and do plenty-it's just that it all seemed to be designed so that we could enjoy all of the experiences without feeling like we were always on the move. The pace was perfect for us.

The cooking classes were, of course, great fun. The chefs were not only wonderful cooks, they were also terrific teachers. Some of the guests in our group had more experience than others and yet everyone was able to learn and participate. (I would point out that while the cooking was an significant part of the experience, even those in our group who claimed they never cooked at home truly seemed to enjoy the time in the kitchen. (Honestly, if you imagine going to visit close friends and hanging out in the kitchen while dinner was prepared, you can get a feel for what the cooking part of this week was like. And by the way, the kitchen is spectacular - surrounded by windows on three sides with sliding doors that open out to the porch and views of the hills!)

We also loved our excursions - our visit to Rome was nothing less than magnificent, capped off by dinner overlooking the city and St. Peter's Basilica in the distance. (Not something you get to do every day!) Similarly, our visit to a small olive oil producer's orchard nearby, introduced us to the fascinating process and history behind the olive oil industry. Our host Giuseppe later gave us a primer on tasting that was - like the rest of our trip - great fun as well.

The week at La Cucina Sabina was absolutely one of the most enjoyable and memorable experiences my wife and I have ever had. Everything - our hosts, our accommodations, the food, the wine, the excursions. . . . all came together (clearly not by accident) to truly make this the trip of a lifetime.

“An amazinging vacation! An absolute must for those who love to cook, eat and be treated like truly invited guests!”
Reviewed 5 July 2015 for a stay in April 2015

This was an experience of a lifetime. We laughed, made new friends, experienced Italy off the beaten path - like a local but with fine appointments and attention to detail on every event planned. Dining in castles and roof top exclusive homes as well as hands on learning of easy to understand cooking lessons/recipes. And then the extra benefit of eating the amazingly delicious fine food we made along with lots of wonderful wines and regional olive oils. The resort is kept meticulously clean, the rooms are perfectly appointed and the owners and entire team makeyou feel like family! It was fantastico!

“Cuchina Sabina is more than a vacation...it's a total immersion experience of a lifetime!”
Reviewed 1 July 2015 for a stay in April 2015

From the moment we arrived at the airport, we were enveloped, by Mike and Guiseppe, in the warmth and beauty that is Cuchina Sabina. Luscious olive trees and vineyards surrounded by massive cyprus trees on sunlit green hills awaited us. The Villa and grounds with outdoor dining, manicured lawns, views in every direction, and crystal clear pool were heavenly. Each couple had a private suite and bathroom with the most comfortable beds I have ever felt in my life. Every meal is shared with all guests and right away, my partner and I, both women, felt right at home! We actually made lasting friendships with the other couples attending that week!
I was apprehensive as I've always preferred hot dogs and baked beans to actual cooking. However, I was the first of our group to actually try some of the wonderful recipes and techniques we learned when we got back home to Portland, Oregon. I found the excursions to castles, gardens, vineyards, and the city of Rome just fantastic! We met so many people, went to places too fantastic to put into words and came home refreshed and filled with gratitude for such a wonderful week. Cuchina Sabina is not your ordinary cooking school...it is an adventure of a lifetime!

“One of the best trips we have had to Italy”

We rented a villa in Chianti last fall and the villa was out dated and not well maintained. This villa was newly remodeled and the bathrooms were modern and clean. We attended the cooking school that they host at the villa with 17 people. Mike and Giuseppe were the perfect host's!! Everything was handled perfectly and the schedule allowed us to see some very unique sights along with learning about the Italian culture. I would suggest anyone who is interested in experiencing a true Italian experience to try this.

“La Cucina Sabina”

My husband and I celebrated the first week of our Honeymoon at La Cucina Sabina; the cooking school hosted at Villa La Tartaruga Sabina. We were very pleased by our newly renovated room and bathroom, as well as the very expansive living areas and AMAZING new kitchen! We thoroughly enjoyed the pleasant staff, learning how to make all of the delicious food, and getting to eat everything we made! The tours each day made us feel pampered as we were able to see things typical tourists may never get to see including a private tour of a thousand year old olive grove, a private castle, many beautiful churches, Rome!
Our favorite tour was a private home located in the center of Rome where we enjoyed cocktails and dinner on the rooftop overlooking the city. Our favorite meals were the Veal Saltimbocca and the fresh pizza made in the outdoor pizza oven.
When we arrived we were greeted by the staff and introduced to the other guests attending the school. At the end of the week we ended up exchanging our contact information with everyone at the school as the people we met and connections we made that week were truly remarkable. My husband and I highly recommend La Cucina Sabina to any couple or group looking to get away and be pampered (and very well fed). This was truly a VIP experience.
Also, don't miss the opportunity to purchase the olive oils and wines sold in the shop at the villa as they were wonderful!
