“Superb hosts”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2014

So, Location is good and only 2 stops to Zermatt and about a 10 min walk to Randa station, Some stunning views from the hotel. The hotel was clean, Tidy, comfortable and had what you needed. WIFI was perfect when i was here also. Now onto Maurizio and his lovely wife, He made us feel nothing but welcome whilst we were in his hotel, Let him cook the chefs special for you rather than order specific meals as his food was superb and varied so you never got the same thing, 5 courses of great food each night although I struggle the second night due to eating a late lunch to which I was not happy as I was served up an amazing shellfish pasta for my main. They also have some excellent wine. All at good prices

We were recommended this hotel by a friend, and it seemed to be good value for money and at a reasonable distance from Zermatt, where we had planned to go hiking for the weekend.

However, when we showed up, the host was extremely rude from the first moment, for one reason: we showed up earlier than check-in time. We had ALREADY INFORMED him by email that we would be arriving at that time. We even tried to explain to him that we arrived at that hour due to the train frequency to Randa, we only wanted to leave the suitcase at the hotel and we had no intentions of staying in the room, we had plans to go to Zermatt immediately and we would only return to use the room in the evening.

But he would not listen! He went on to scold us for not following the rules explained in his email, even to the extent of asking what we do for a living, whether we make above minimum wage, whether we are familiar with the Swiss way of living (which was to say rules are made for everyone and we must learn to follow them). It took us a good couple of minutes to come to terms with the fact that we were actually being yelled at, completely not what we were prepared for at the check in desk of a tourist hotel.

This completely ruined the start of an otherwise great vacation, and we wanted to have nothing to do with him or his hotel for the rest of the stay apart from the reality that we had already arranged to sleep there: we didn't use the restaurant or any of the other amenities because we were fed up with his attitude and didn't want another interaction with him that would ruin the rest of our experience at Zermatt. And it paid off: we had a great weekend!

Looking at the other reviews of him and his hotel (on this and other websites), it looks like he is a great and friendly host to those that follow his boundaries - but the moment you overstep that by circumstance, intent, or accident, or EVEN WHEN IT IS HE who misunderstands the situation (since we did inform him about our arrival in advance), his short fuse is blown and he acts like you've offended the gods and your behavior is punishable by belittling your presence. The other staff of the hotel were great and courteous though... our brief interactions with them were pleasant- the complete opposite of the owner.

My name is Maurizio Monticelli and I have only one word.

About your check in, you came in my hotel at 10.30 in the morning out of the booking rules and without our permission.

About you had my email where was written really clear that was not possible to check-in so early.

You think to be different and privileged? All my guests have the same conditions why you have to be different?

Next time remember to respect the booking rules also the people that are working for you and remember the universal keys to open the doors PLEASE and SORRY. You have no any right to offend me only because your idea was to profit of our free services.

I stayed at this hotel in April '14. We got in late, but were able to find the hotel and not loose our rooms. The views were amazing. Next morning Maurizio, the owner, gave us a ride to the train station. I will stay here again.

The walk from Randa train station is not the easiest, having to roll luggages up a gentle slope, but it isn't too bad. For extra CHF, you can get a return shuttle service. We did not pay for this, but the owner was kind enough to offer us a free ride back to the station. He was very friendly with us, though we were a bit wary at first given some of the reviews we'd read. It all turned out well!

When we arrived about 6:30pm, there was noone at reception- only an envelope with our name and the key. No problem- we knew to expect this as it's a family business. We found our own way to our room, but it took some effort to get the luggages up 6 flights of stairs. Only later did we realize there was actually a lift, when we saw the owner's wife using it.

Our room was clean with nice views from the balcony. There was satellite TV with English news, which was a nice change for us. We also made use of the coffee machine provided, and the bottle of free water and a couple of chocolates. The bathroom was very spacious. It was great except I should point out that the bathtub was quite high- up to my thighs and I'm 160cm tall. So be careful getting in and out to have a shower- I think elderly people would have some trouble. The only negative about our room, which was at the end of the corridor was the bad wifi reception. I could not get connected at all, while my friends did manage to by getting close to the wall. However, the signal would keep dropping out. Our neighbours had the same problem.

Inside the envelope we received at reception, there was a breakfast voucher for CHF7.50 each instead of the usual CHF12.50, so I suggest not pre-paying for breakfast. Breakfast was good- yoghurt, cereal, chocolates, bread (toaster provided), pineapple, cold meat, coffee/cappuccino. The owner seemed very happy to serve his guests.

In summary, the room, breakfast and the hosts were all quite good. Yes, Zermatt is super expensive and Randa is cheaper, but only a few stops away. However, we still paid about AU$60 per person per night- the equal highest amount with Zurich, and the most in our entire 4 week trip... so I think it's fair to also expect good WIFI reception.

After a nice walk from the train station we were greeted by staff saying why did we walk they would have come and got us. This was the start of plenty of friendly conversations and joking with the staff. If your looking for flash modern amenities then this place is not for you. If you are after a place that makes you want to stay longer because they make you feel welcome then you are home. As Australians who love being in a family environment we enjoyed our short stay, the big serves at dinner, the quirky singer and the quaint surroundings. If you stay here make sure you don't cut short your stay in Randa and at the hotel because it is a wonderful spot. Thank-you for everything Maurizio and staff, hope you liked your kangaroo pins.

I don't even know where to start in raving about this gem! First of all, if you want to visit Zermatt and "do" the Matterhorn experience, go in to it knowing that Zermatt is WILDLY expensive, and everything you will want and need to do will cost 10X more than you had hoped! Because of this, I had searched for hotels nearby Zermatt, as the rooms within the small village proper were exorbitant.

This hotel is in a tiny hamlet called Randa, which is really nothing more than a cluster of a few streets off the main highway, which contains a smattering of similar small mom-'n-pop lodging. The Randa "hotel village" is only a couple of miles from Tasch, which is the closest actual town.

From Tasch you get the 10 minute train to Zermatt, and explore it by day-tripping, super easy! We had a rent car so drove 4 minutes from the hotel to the Tasch train station, left it there for the day while we traveled to/from Zermatt by train. But the incredible hotel staff will also run you to the Tasch train station for just a couple of CHFs, if you don't have a car. Keep in mind that Zermatt is completely pedestrian zoned, no cars may enter the town. So the closest you can get by car/road is Tasch, anyway, and from there there is no other access to Zermatt other than the train or a taxi.

The hotel is a delight--small, comfy, cozy, family owned and run. The rooms are spotless and well-equipped. They have a dvd player in every room, and a library of dvds to browse through. But the real treasure of this find is the restaurant....

The hotel owner and his wife man the kitchen and restaurant and served us quite easily one of the most magnificent meals we had ever had in our lives. The portions are gargantuan, the quality out of this world, everything is handmade, and made with true love and affection. They were concerned with every bite we took, and it was pure bliss. The food was indescribable, the attention tireless, and the passion for every diner's satisfaction palpable! They even ended up putting together some things for us off-menu, to cater to some special dietary needs and requests.

If you stay here, which I hope you do, do NOT make the error of day-tripping to Zermatt and thinking you should stay over for dinner at a restaurant up there, too. You will overspend horrible resort-town prices ($30 for a hamburger!!!), when all you have to do is get back to the hotel before 9pm for some of the best food in Switzerland. And then you can just roll in to bed.
