A group of friends and I booked a Bay Retreat villa through secretescapes.com for a long weekend break. We were drawn to what looked like a high-quality, contemporary finish. We were certainly not disappointed!

Downstairs, a generous hallway featuring under-stairs cupboard and a glass wall to the living room offered a warm welcome to the property. A small WC off the hallway was nicely tiled and finished with high-end sanitary ware.

The L-shaped open plan living area had a fantastic contemporary kitchen, dining area with 4 chairs and a corner group sofa. This worked really well for our lazy weekend of cooking, eating, drinking and chilling out, as it lent itself perfectly to being sociable. The kitchen was very well equipped, with halogen hob, oven, extractor, dishwasher and washer-dryer. It also boasted a number of utensils and crockery and cutlery. The only slight negative was that the sofa was made of faux leather and, as such, was not that comfortable to sit on for very long!

Upstairs, the villa had two bedrooms; one double, and a twin. The double had a fantastic Velux double window-cum-balcony, which was really cute, and had room for two or three people to step out. The twin was spacious and well appointed, with contemporary furniture with clean lines. The upstairs bathroom boasted floor-to-ceiling tiles, a proper enamel bath and power shower over. The finish was very high-end.

The rental included towels and tea towels, all electricity and utilities and was a bargain of a price booked through secretescapes.com. As we were staying in November, we weren't expecting good weather. Thankfully the modern storage heaters kept us toasty warm all weekend.

Whilst we didn't use it much during a soggy November weekend, the villa also had a small garden with decking area at the rear. This garden was small, but was a nice outside space and would have been ideal for a summer breakfast or evening barbecue.

The villas are located in the small village of St Merryn, a short drive from the Cornish town of Padstow. Padstow has a lovely harbour and boasts a number of Rick Stein food venues. Sadly, most of these were closed during the weekend of our visit :o(

All in all, we had a great time and I would most certainly recommend to others that they stay here.

Room Tip: The villas are arranged around a square, with a terrace of about 8 villas per side. Our villa was at...

Ok, so the villa's are situated on a slightly run down looking holiday park but being in their own little cul-de-sac you wouldn't know. On arrival we collected our key from the keysafe with no problems. Some reviewers have mentioned that the exterior of the villas is a little drab compared with the photo's, but as they were probably taken when the villa's were built in 2008 a bit of weathering over 5 years is to be expected.
Anyway, you definitely can't judge a book by it's cover as the inside of our villa (24) was very well maintained. The carpet and bathroom suites looks like new, the general furnishings in very good condition, and the bedding and towels very clean and good quality. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to cook and eat a meal, as well as a fridge, freezer, washing machine and dishwasher. There's a Londis on site, right next to the villas, which sells all the essentials. Our villa has a shower over a bath in the upstairs bathroom, with plenty of hot water, and there's also a separate cloakroom downstairs. Both bedrooms are a good size, the twin especially spacious. It was very quiet, during the day and night, and we all slept very well. The small garden area at the back feels private, and if it had been sunny we would definitely have used it, but as it's mid November we stayed indoors when we weren't out exploring the Cornish coast and the heating kept us warm and cosy.

Stayed for three nights through travelzoo offer. Absolute bargain considering three course meal at beaucliffes was thrown in. We were a little bit concerned when we arrived at a holiday park but the area where the villas are is nice. The villas were modern and spotless and fully equipped with everything that you'd need. Dog friendly was a bonus. Location good (let's face it you have to drive everywhere in Cornwall!) to explore from. We were starting to get a little twitchy about the security deposit being returned, as there is no paperwork when you check in stating any known damage and the property isn't inspected or signed off as OK in your presence when you leave which would be more formal, professional and reassuring. We left the place spotless and took photos just in case of dispute but deposit just been returned ten days after departure.

A small contingent of chicks arrived for a hen weekend and overall we were really impressed with the standard of the accommodation. The villa's themselves are fresh and neutral and have a full compliment of kitchenware. The beds are comfortable and clean and well kept and the carpets are spotless- always a good indication of attention for detail. My only concerns were when I found a (singular) flea hopping around-(could easily have come in via the garden) on the sofa- however, the place does allow pets and the pull-out sofa beds were really grim- pet hair, dusty and rather stale-I wouldn't sleep on them at all. I'd advise folks to bring a blow-up bed as there's plenty of room in the living area. Just a note- the place has no internet and zero reception for Vodafone or orange -O2 was ok - outside.

We booked our deal via travelzoo and for the price I would say it is a fantastic deal. We dined at Beaucliffs restaurant as part of the deal and the food was very high quality as was the service. Though be aware it cost us £70.00 return for a taxi from the villa as it's about 20mins away- however, that was for 7 of us and given the steal of the overall price -easily acceptable.

Room Tip: Use the bedrooms- don't use the pull-outs!

We booked a long weekend via Secret Escapes, and being out of season it was very cheap. When we turned up we found our key in the coded safe box like promised and let ourselves in (two couples). We were very impressed when we turned up, the place was spotless. We arrived at night so couldn't really see the outside of the building at that stage. Over the course of the weekend, a hen group moved into the villa next to ours, they were very noisy but could only be heard when in the garden, the walls are either very thick or have excellent sound padded so they didn't ruin our visit at all (through disturbed sleep). The location was great for exploring Padstow, Newquay etc. The outside of the "villa" was a little rough in places but we didn't really notice it at all. Had a great trip to Padstow and Bay Retreat Villas played their part.

Just returned from a 3 day break for two adults and three teenagers. Outside of villas is a bit weather beaten but the inside of our villa was spotless. Really impressed with size of rooms and storage and loved the airiness of the balcony in the main bedroom and two sets of French doors downstairs. Garden was ok for what we needed it for. Overall felt very comfortable while we were there, plenty of space, lovely and clean and great location. Would definitely use again.

It is obvious when you arrive that the professional photos were taken when the villas were new. The externals have not been maintained and looks extremely shabby when you arrive, this is in addition to the realisation that you have entered a 1970s chalet park.

The villas themselves are spotless inside although the plastic brown sofa wasn't very inviting to sit on and I think we had the short straw on allocation cause there wasn't a garden as such to sit out in as it was extremely small and backed onto the road and chalet park, with a plastic table and chairs. We didn't want to spend too much in the 'villa' and as such we left a day early.

On a positive note It is a great location.

Room Tip: If this is your type of thing and you are thinking of booking avoid room 4 and I guess any on that s...
