Harlyn Sands Holiday Park

Excellent caravan site, the beach is about 600 metres away and what a lovely beach it is, dog friendly for the pet lovers but also an excellent family beach well policed and well looked after. Other beaches are just a short a lovely walk away.

We have been visiting Harlyn for many years, as children too! We love the fact that we can leave the car and walk to so many different beaches within minutes of the site! The views are stunning whatever time of the year. The Park is quite congested in July & August as it caters so well for children and is ideal for families. Therefore we prefer to visit out of season when it is a little quieter, although we do try to take our grandchildren with us whenever possible. Love it at Harlyn Sands can't wait for our next trip in September!!

As a local, we like to see the weather forecast, pack up the tent in the car and go away for the weekend, the advantage of living in this beautiful part of the world.

Over the years we have stayed at many of the camp sites in Cornwall and many around this part of Cornwall but never at Harlyn Sands.

The campsite itself is nice, not offensive, it is well maintained and tidy, you couldn't really ask for anymore. It is very large, the biggest we have stayed at but with the large site you get the bar, food outlets, shop, swimming pool, amusement arcade, parks, fair ground rides and evening entertainment. Of course this means it is much louder and busier than others we have stayed at but if you want your children entertained and fed and for you to have a drink and walk back to your accommodation then it will be perfect.

The pitches are large enough for a family size tent and to still be able to park your car, however, none of the pitches are very private and are ordered in rows and rows of tents and caravans. If the site was full, there would be no open grass around your tent for children to kick a ball about. There is a very large additional field which is opened at this time of the year which is closer to the beach, much quieter, has great views but is further from the facilities, if we went again this would have been our preference.

The location is by far the best thing going for the site, one of the best we have stayed at, the beach of Harlyn is walkable with lots of small coves on the way which would not look out of place in the Med.

However, there are 3 things about this site would put me off rebooking.
1. There is only one shower block for the whole site and the showers are 20p for 4 minutes, an unexpected cost and inconvenience spending your holiday hoarding 20p's.
2. The swimming pool is expensive, especially like us you have a young family who want to go swimming in the morning and again at the end of the day, over £11 per visit. The rules of the swimming pool will take 5 minutes to read and are enforced by the pool attendants who must work on commission everytime they blow their whistle. All three of my children swim unaided but because I waited at the bottom of the slide to catch my children and also choose to swim around the lazy river with them, was told that they clearly can not swim so must stay in the toddler pool and if they were seen in the main pool again I would be asked to leave. Consequently you have an over full toddler pool and not many people in the main pool.
3. The third issue is the icing on the cake. There is no toilet paper in the cubicles but a central dispenser which you need to decide how many sheets you need before going to the toilet, not something I had every asked myself before. The central dispenser is so high up the wall that my children could reach it. I have never come across this arrangement before. My advise is to take your own toilet.

Overall a pleasant site but the few things that annoyed me over a weekend would have worn thin by the end of a longer stay.

Room Tip: During the peak season ask for a camping pitch in the overspill field.

ACCOMMODATION
We booked a private caravan as it was around £50 cheaper than booking through the caravan park itself (no. 116 via ukcaravans4hire - if anyone would like a review of this particular caravan please contact me!).

GETTING THERE
The site was relatively easy to get to. The usual narrow cornish lanes only wide enough for one car. Our satnav actually sent us the right way but, me being me, I decided it was wrong, turned round and went another way! We eventually found it. You just follow the signs, drive over the bridge near the beach and carry straight on for a while.

THE CARAVAN PARK
We were so so pleased with both the caravan and the site. The caravan was in the quieter part of the site away from the clubhouse and play park and we were surprised how peaceful the park was, although this could've been because our holiday was in term time! The park was well-maintained, the shop stocked everything we needed and the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly! We don't really do the "entertainment" thing but went there one night and had to leave after 15 minutes through embarrassment for the animation staff! They were lovely though, seemed very professional and the whole thing is obviously geared up for kids. The 3-13 year olds seemed to love it and this is a very good site and beach for that age group. There is a pool table and the usual amusement arcade and dance machine thing which always seems to be occupied by two identical tiny blonde girls stamping away manically with looks of fierce determination on their sweaty little faces!

The indoor pool was attractively designed with varying depths for kids and a couple of lifeguards. Although I was a little concerned that anyone could just walk into the changing rooms from the rear entrance! I went in looking for my daughter as she had the caravan key only to find her bag in the changing rooms with cash/cards/mobile (and the key!) Handy for me but also for a thief!

FOOD AND DRINK
We only ate at the restaurant once when we had the carvery on a Thursday night. 3 courses for £8.50 I think it was or 2 courses for £7.50. And it was such good value for money. Large portions of your choice of meat (or some of all of them!) and help yourself to potatoes, veg, cauliflower cheese, stuffing etc. We had to take the puddings back to our caravan as we just couldn't eat them! Nice puds - different sorts of cake/gateaux, small pail of strawberries and ice cream, lemon meringue pie etc. I was very surprised at the cheapness of the drinks in the bar - 2 J2O's and half a shandy came to £3 something! I didn't feel at this Park that they were trying to make money out of you left right and centre like at some other Parks. No tennis courts though which would've been nice.

We went to the Harlyn Bay Inn for a meal one night. The food and surroundings were nice and reasonably priced and it's very easy to reach, you can just walk along the beach to it! I would say that they seem to take last food orders very early so it's probably worth getting there early as they seemed quite busy. From memory there is also a small beach shop there which sells inflatables etc.

LOCATION
But, by far and away the crowning glory of this caravan park was its location. Although only a few caravans actually had a view of the sea it was about a 5-10 minute pleasant walk down to the most wonderful beach. The pathway down is a little rocky so difficult with prams etc but do-able.

The beach consists of 3-4 little coves and the main stretch. White soft sand and crystal clear aquamarine water! The coves are easy to walk round to at low tide but do get cut off at high tide so be careful! We were "stranded" on one cove for a couple of hours but as it was beautiful we were quite happy! We could've clambered over the rocks perhaps but decided to "Crusoe" it! We also took a bbq down to the beach one evening which was lovely and incredibly peaceful. As the site is so near to the beach it's relatively easy to pop back for suntan lotion, to replenish food supplies or the loo!

I couldn't get over how quiet everything was, very few people on the beach. Rock pools for the kids, ice cream van and loos at the end of the long stretch of beach. A few areas in this stretch of shingle and rocks but most of it soft sand. There were quite a few jellyfish in the water which made the kids a bit twitchy! Gently shelving water for kids/paddling and gentle waves with only a couple of rocks - as the water is so clear there's no way you can accidentally stub your toe on them!!

There's a lovely coastal walk past tiny coves and hovering kestrels, taking in Mother Ivey's beach after about 30 mins. This was quite an idyllic beach and, again, unbelievably quiet. I've actually researched the cost of caravans at Mother Ivey's caravan park since our return as the park was very smart and handy for this beach but they do seem very expensive! There are benches at strategic points along the coast path which was handy. In a few places you're relatively near the edge of the headland so be careful if you have young free-ranging kids! If you carry on round you come to a lighthouse and Trevose Head - possibly an hour's walk? And then round to Boobies Bay (yup, really) which was rocky and Constantine Bay, a large stretch of sand which was frequented by surfers as the waves were rougher than in Harlyn Bay. The beach is monitored by lifeguards which provided entertainment for my teenage daughter as they sprinted into the water "Baywatch" style!

Or you can take the lazy route and leave from the front entrance to the caravan Park, turn right, past Mother Ivey's Park and take the left fork at the snack hut (not open when we were there) which brings you to Boobies and Constantine Bay in about 20-30 minutes.

We weren't overly fond of Padstowe, expecting a quaint fishing village for some reason, but it was fine. About a 10 minute drive away. Touristy shops, pasties by the dozen, a small supermarket (Tesco nearby apparently) and a lovely wild-flower lined walk up a hill where we sat in a field overlooking the beautiful bay. We also went on a speedboat ride (£6 each) which was very enjoyable if slightly damp!

To summarise - beautiful area, lovely scenery, relaxing caravan park with friendly helpful staff, soft white sand and aquamarine sea - what's not to love?!

We have travelled down to Harlyn again for a few weekends this year already, staying in both our campervan and in one of the sites luxury static vans on different occasions. I cannot recommend this site enough, the location is stunning with its own little beach, the staff are all helpful and friendly and it has a real family atmosphere.

Room Tip: They have quite a few static vans with a sea view, you can hear the waves...beautiful

A brilliant site for families or couples. The food in the restaurant is excellent value for money with a good choice of dishes We have been coming to this site for several years and are treated as part of a family. The caravans are clean and modern and very comfortable. All the facilities are clean and if there is a problem anywhere on site its resolved very quickly. I would recommend this site for everyone.
