Very beautiful hotel and enjoyable stay, but a few non 5 star issues

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 22 Aug 2020
The hotel and the surroundings are amazingly beautiful. It is great being on a private island just steps away from the old town. Medieval former monastery with a cloister with paintings from the late 1800s of historical events. Large lovely terrace with fantastic lake views. An enclosed sunbathing area ("beach" with terraced lawns) with access to go into the water. Towels are provided and there is a shower. I enjoyed my daily swims; the water temperature was pleasant. There were warnings about strong currents but that was nothing to worry about (but young children should of course be supervised). I could feel som currents just by the terrace of the bar but it's not like it's the Pacific ocean.
We had a superior twin room and paid the extra fee of 20 euros to have a terrace/balcony. These rooms are on the side of the building so you get a nice lateral lake view especially if you are in the rooms nearest the lake (for example rooms 214, 215 and 217). We also enjoyed looking at the storks that live in a high tree in the garden. I found the room to be relatively small for a 5 star hotel, but it was ok. Rather typical hotel furniture. I appreciated that there was good closet space. However, I didn't like the bathroom door which seems to be an international trend as I've seen it in several other places: A frosted glass door with gaps on the sides and underneath.
As much as I liked staying at this hotel, and would recommend it to anyone who goes to Konstanz, I wonder a little how it can have 5 stars as the service level isn't really up to it.
There were two water bottles in the room when we arrived but these were not replaced during our 4 night stay. However, we appreciated the water bottles given for the journey on the very hot day when we checked out.
I would recommend making use of the "Do not disturb" sign. One day, housekeeping entered our room without knocking - it was 11.45 AM so I suppose a lot of people would be out but they shouldn't assume that. The next morning they knocked on our door at 8.30 when we were sleeping, then again at 9:20 and at 9:55.
I found the service in the Zeppelin bar to be a bit slow. They also turned the light off for the outside seating at about 11 PM, without any warning, even though we were several people sitting there and the bar is open till midnight.
Most mornings, when we arrived for breakfast, the staff was busy cleaning and setting tables and nobody greeted us, assigned tables or acknowledged our existence in any way. So we seated ourselves and this led to that we once accidentally "stole" the table of 2 other persons who were inside getting food at the buffet (the table wasn't marked as taken).
The selection at the breakfast buffet was decent but not fantastic. It might have been more limited than usual because of the Corona situation. Bottled juices and other cold drinks are available on a table which is somewhat hard to find: there is a sign in German only, informing guests where it is and I did not understand the word "kreuzgang" (now I know that it means "cloister"). You can also order fresh orange or grapefruit juice at the table. However, this wasn't anything they advertised or offered until we asked.
There is no concierge. The receptionist can give some information, but they don't sell tickets for the boat tours for example.

Great experience from reception to restaurant and cocktail bar. Stunning views, beautifully positioned hotel with private access to lake, great restaurant and superb breakfast. Rented bikes for a nice tour. Only reason it did not get an excellent rating is that you can only have breakfast outside from 9h, not earlier, and when the weather is nice, it becomes very hot inside. Then if you arrive at 9h to have breakfast outside, you end up queing for a very long time. Reception told me that this rule exists to protect from the outside noise those who want to sleep late. The noise is apparently not from the guests, but from the staff setting up the tables outside. So the hotel knows what they need to work on!

Booked 2 rooms as part of a family celebration, one a large deluxe room as we have a child, it was traditional and spacious. The second room was lake front and the decor was extremely sharp and airy. Staying in Konstanz it would be hard to find a better hotel. Going into a 14 day quarantine for this trip, that hotel like the next in Bavaria is worth the penalty.

Room tip: Pay the extra for lake front

Outstanding historical hotel on own quiet area down to Bodensee and next to old town of Konstanze. You can swim directly in Bodensee from hotel area and walk to restaurants in 5-10 min. Great breakfast included.

Wonderful hotel located in a 700 year old Monastery on Lake Konstanz. If you have the opportunity to stay here do-you won't regret it. The Hotel is on its own island and separated from the mainland by a bridge. An easy 10 min walk from the Railway station and over the road from the bridge to the Hotel is the 'old town' We were in a 'partial sea view room' on side of the building which had a small balcony and great Lake views. Staff were friendly, professional and helpful. Room and bathroom well appointed and spotless. The outside Terrace Restaurant was a wonderful place to enjoy a superb lunch and dinner and to watch all the activity on the lake. I can't recommend this Hotel highly enough and can't think of any improvements that could be made. I often think back to the days spent there and will return one day.......

Beautiful hotel and gardens right on Lake Constance. Quiet and peaceful rooms with fantastic views of water, sky and mountains. Yet a few minutes away by foot from picturesque old town filled with restaurants and shops. We especially appreciated the relaxed breakfast buffet until 11 am with lake views. Great service: our firm mattresses were replaced with softer ones. Reduced off season rates in January were excellent.

Room tip: Double Room with lake view.
