This place didn't have great reviews so I wasn't sure what to expect (they weren't bad by any means, but it wasn't at the top). In my opinion the Schaufele is some of the best around.

Even if you don't go for food, go for the beer - the Schwarzla. Bamberg is known for its smoked beer, but this beer stands out to me. Its a black lager and tastles like a cross between a dunkel and a guinness. It was my favorite beer of our entire visit to Bamberg.

This was our final stop before dinner. We dropped in to try their best beers. It was light and crisp with a clean taste. When we arrived it was very crowded but jumped on a reserved table with 90 minutes before they arrived. It was full of Americans with 1 German couple. By the time we left the Americans had been replaced with locals enjoying a cleansing beer before dinner! We had lots of laughs!

We came for lunch on a sunny Saturday afternoon and the place was packed. There are three (or more) rooms inside plus outside tables, and it was nearly full. This, even though the place is away from the heavily traveled and touristy streets.

The menu is limited but the food is well prepared, the portions are more than generous and the prices are modest. You sit at communal tables (that would seat six or eight) and so have an occasion to meet new friends. Service when we were there was a bit slow, but that was likely because of the number of customers; we could see into the kitchen from where we sat and they were moving at a furious pace. The beer is very good; the darker beer, schwarzla, is slightly smoky but delicious. The atmosphere is in keeping with the Middle Ages feel of a lot of Bamberg.

My wife had the Wiener schnitzel (two large pieces) and potato salad and I had three bratwurst with sauerkraut and bread. We each had a half liter of beer and our tab came to 22.20 euros. We were stuffed and very satisfied with both the meal and the experience.

It was my first bier garden! The inside was very charming but the outside garden was a great place for a first visit. Great beer and dinner was great too.

I went there for lunch and had a very tasty house salad and a local beer that was really good. Quiet location.
