“Worth a visit!”

The cathedral sits high on a hill overlooking the town and its surrounding landscape. It's claim to fame is the "Bamberger Reiter", a statue of historic background

“beautiful city high on hill over city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 September 2013

Well worth a minimal hike from old city. The cathedral has several interesting doors that a guide will unlock better than a guidebook. Inside are wonderful tombs, statues and two differnt styles at each end. Surrounding buildings make the whole complex very interesting.

“St Peter & St George Cathedral - huge”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 September 2013

This cathedral was founded in 1007 and it stands high on the hill overlooking Bamberg city. It is very large with many tombs and large stone sculptures to see but I found it also very dark and dull inside. The architecture is a mix of Gothic & Romanesque.

“Beautiful city, beautiful Cathedral”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2013

Bamberg is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. It has been preserved (like Heidelberg) from bombing during WW2 and therefore is very well preserved. The cathedral, Little Venice, the old city hall are all well worth visiting.
The cathedral (called Bamberger Dom) is a building from the early Middle Ages, with 4 towers outside.
The interior is imposing, the sculptures and the carvings are historically very interesting (an equestrian statue, the tombs of an emperor and an empress as well as one of a pope)
The organ has a wonderful sound (if you are lucky enough to hear it play during a brief concert)

“Treasure of faith”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2013

the interior is clean and the whole internal structure is spacious. Feels like a plain romanesque-gothic church, free from influences that sometimes makes churches feel more like museums. If you are lucky, you can listen to the organist rehearsng for the next concert or mass. don't miss the Prince's Portal outside.
