Description: In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 and now run by the Trum family in the 6th generation, it is the fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier"). The smoked beer is here at the brewery tavern still being tapped directly from the wooden barrel according to old tradition. "Even if the brew tastes somewhat strange at the first swallow, do not stop, because soon you will realize that your thirst will not decrease and your pleasure will visibly increase."

The beer (Rauchbier) has a smoke aroma and a pleasant smoke taste that goes well with the normal smooth German beer experience. We had our Rauchbier with a roasted pork knuckle (schweinhaxe), sauerkraut, and dumpling. The smoked flavor of the beer was a perfect compliment to the tender pork.

It is lovely medieval pub/restaurant with a great atmosphere. There are several rooms and a beer garden. The beer is lovely at a very reasonable price.

There's a large crowd standing outside drinking. We had a reservation, that's the only way to get in. Dinner was goulash with noodles, salad and apple strudel with creme anglaise. The goulash was just ok. Dessert was the best.

Oh I forgot we had soup with a liver dumpling. The dumpling was like a meatball, not liver.

Dear Heidi Y,

thank you for your rating. A reservation is however not absolutely necessary, as we never reserve more than half of our seats, so that sponateous visitors always have a principal chance of getting a place.

Best regards,

Matthias Trum

During the day (even on a Friday/Saturday) it's relatively easy to get a table here. My wife and I just grabbed a beer from the window and stood outside to enjoy the weather. They were serving their Marzen and Urbock (both of which are made with smoked malt) - the Urbock was only being served at the bar INSIDE the restaurant though. Service is what you would expect from a to-go beer window - know what you want to order and have your money ready. The beer itself was good and grows on you (so even if you don't think smoked beer sounds good - try it). However, it isn't my favorite smoked beer in Bamberg - that is Spezial.

At night this is a great spot to grab a beer and stand in the street (it's a party). Even if the line for the beer window is out the door it doesn't take more than a few minutes - see tips above).

On our Viking River Cruise Budapest to Amsterdam we stopped at Bamberg on a Sunday - the shops were closed but the smoked beer was delicious at Schlenkerla. Highly recommend.
