Have to admit I wasn't expecting much, judging from the pictures. But this hotel is a hidden gem. First of all, dinner in the restaurant was excellent. We went into town one night to try something different but we couldn't find anything that appealed (either too expensive, too gimmicky or too seedy) and ended up coming back to the Hotel Fohr. The menu may be limited but each item is carefully, thoughtfully prepared: clearly they care about what they put on the plate. And it's one of the few places in Germany where we found entrees served with vegetables! Also, if you want to travel to Meersburg, the Phalbaumuseum in Uhldingen or Lindau, there are two bus stops and a local train station a few meters from the hotel. We never had to hire a cab to get anywhere. The staff was so helpful in explaining the bus schedules and how to get the ferry to Romanshorn for our trip to Zurich. We'd stay here again. Definitely.

We stayed four nights in this reasonably modern hotel in a room with "lake view" (see photo) - which is also the quiet side of the hotel. Land view rooms face the busy main road between Stokach and Bregenz. Rooms are spacious and clean and the bed was good. WiFi was working but not very fast and with hiccups. Staff is friendly and helpful and the breakfast buffet is very good. The hotel is not close to the town centre - about a 20 - 30 minute walk and walking you want as parking in down town Friedrichshafen is at a premium - especially during events at the local exhibition centre ("Messe") when it can get really crowded. On the other hand: the restaurant of the hotel serves a really good meal with an excellent price-quality ratio and an affordable wine list so you don't really have to go out after a busy at the "Messe".

Room Tip: "Lake view" rooms are at the quiet side.

We used this hotel for one night on our bike ride around Lake Constance. The hotel is modern and comfortable, the only one with air conditioning from those in which we stayed. The room was very spacious with a magnificent view of the lake.

We were pre-booked into this hotel on a bicycle tour of Lake Constance (Headwater Holidays). The hotel is fine if you are a business traveller or want a motel by the side of a busy road for a night. But for the pedestrian or cyclist it is in a terrible position, miles outside the town, and with very limited facilities, and a very limited menu. There is no lounge to speak of, just a bench seat off reception. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but the lake view is in reality a view of the back of an adjoining factory/ office and some apartment blocs. Incidentally , the loading bay starts early at the factory / office.
Staff were very helpful and efficient.

I went to Germany for the first time ever and had a chance to stay at the Fohr. It wasn't a substandard hotel by any means but I would certainly agree with one of the reviews that its not a 4-star hotel either. Having said that I'd admit that my saty was very comfy with clean linen, bathroom, view overlooking the Bodensee and swiss alps. Grocery store across the street was a great facility with a petrol pump shop arond the street too. Breakfast was just satisfactory but the view from the dining room was not up to the mark as a 4-star hotel could boast about. It was rather a dumb view overlooking the apartments and car porch. The hotel was more occupied with ppl aged over 50 or so. The hotel is devoid of any round the clock service for food items. As I reached the hotel at night, I wanted something to eat but the kitchen had already closed down before 2200 Hrs. So I had to order a Pizza; thanks to the receptionist who spoke english and gave me the tel no of the Pizza restaurant. else I would have had to sleep empty stomach after a hectic flight from Shnaghai to friedrichshafen via Frankfurt - Imagine! Neverthless, I wouldn't mind if I have to go and stay there again. Let me tell all those who read this, the rates adverstised here are far too exaggerated than what they usually rent out a room for......It was for Euro 85 a night. And honestly, its only worth the price I paid. Definitely not as advertised. If I could have a better choicein this price range (80-100 Euros) I wouldn't mind going to another hotel.

Just returned from Freidrichshaffen, traveled there for a 2-day conference, plus a 2-day mini-vacation with husband. Was a bit concerned by one reviewer's comments and I would agree that it is not a 4-star hotel, which implies extravagance and up-scaled furnishings, but I didn't want the impression to be poor, either.

New travelers to the region should anticipate that southern Gernany's past and present is industrial and blue-collar, although it is also a vacation-home destination on Lake Constance for Germans and Swiss.

Even well-executed, all southern German cuisine (known as swabian) is goulash-style pork, beef or chicken wtih spatzle-style noodles - all menues include variations on this kind of cooking - and Fohr is no exception. Salads are fresh and abundant. The region's known for good local cheeses, processed meats and breads.

Hotel Fohr has excellent staff, is across the street from a grocery store and a bank, and is about 5 blocks to the lake and a recreational park and playground. Around the block and behind the hotel is a rental car office and a fuel station. The Fohr rents bicycles, so you can take advantage of extensive, scenic bike trails on the Lake.

The Fohr's reception area and dining room are dated, with dark knotty-wood paneling, but the dining room includes excellent service, cloth tablecloths and fresh flowers.

I would recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable, pleasant, well-situated hotel.

  • Liked — Excellent staff
  • Disliked — Platform type bed was lower than mine at home, and not easy to stand up from.

I have just returned from a short break to Lake Constance. There were four of us and we stayed in the Hotel Föhr in Frierichshafen having booked Lake View Rooms with a balcony.
The hotel claims to be a 4 Star Hotel but I strongly have to disagree with this classification; it’s a bit like a Travel Inn. Please don’t misunderstand me, there is nothing fundamentally wrong with this hotel, the staff are extremely friendly and obliging, the rooms are quite spacious but apart from that there is nothing which would make you say you stayed in a 4 Star Hotel. There are no other facilities, no pool, no sauna and no steam room or gym. The Lake is about 500mtr away from the hotel, the hotel itself is situated within an estate of apartments and flats, the breakfast is quite poor and rather basic and the restaurant menu is rather limited and repetitive. We only ate their on one evening when the weather was not too good, the food was excellent, but I would have struggled to find something different on another day.
It seems that the hotel is mainly used by cyclists who pedal around the lake in a week, stay for just one night and have the luggage forwarded to their next hotel or business people who use it as a one night stopover.
The restaurant closes at 10pm and the bar is supposed to be open until midnight but on two nights we were told around 11pm that they were closing and we were refused further drinks.
Walking distance to the town centre is about 30 minutes, but there is a bus stop outside the hotel and the taxis are quite reasonable at 6 Euros per trip, which for the 4 of us was not too bad.
Would I stay there again? I don’t think so as there are plenty more hotels in the town centre of Friedrichshafen which seem to be of higher standards than the Hotel Föhr. Or if I go again on another cheap flight with Ryanair ( £42.00 return ) I probably will stay in Meersburg a beautiful medieval town right on the shores of Lake Constance from where the ferry boats go to anywhere you want to go from Bregenz in Austria, to Switzerland or to the gorgeous flower island if Mainau.

  • Liked — Friendly & helpful staff
  • Disliked — Distance from town centre, poor breakfast, no other facilties normally associated with a 4 Star Hotel
