“Not quite 4-star but excellent value for money - recommended”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

This hotel doesn't really have the amenities to justify a 4-star rating, but it matches a good 3-star at the price of a 2-star, so no real room to complain - and the rate should warn you before you arrive. The hotel is well located in a small and quaint town, walking distance of everything you want to see (and also the station for trips on the Skeletal trains). Parking is a bit limited at busy times, and the rooms don't have aircon, and are naturally quite warm. However, the hotel has plenty of character, the rooms are kept very clean, breakfasts are good and the staff are very helpful although their English is limited. We stayed for 4 nights over Easter, and the room worked out at just a touch over £50 a night including full breakfast for the pair of us. If we come back to the Harz mountains, we will stay here again.

Our stay at Hotel Schlossmuhle was equally great & frustrating simply because the product is very good but a lack of attention to detail meant that the room suffered from several serious defects.
First the good: The location is excellent, in the very shadow of the castle, therefore in easy walking distance from the centre, which means that you can park the car during your stay and forget about it. This is also well managed with a large car-park just across the road from the hotel. Staff were always very friendly and efficient. Breakfast - we stayed four nights - was always excellent with plenty of fresh rolls, eggs, bacon and small sausages - the closest you will get to a full English on the continent - was all good. The service was quick, and we enjoyed an excellent dinner on our first night. While the menu was slightly limited the food was well prepared, served in reasonable time and VERY tasty.

However, it is in the accommodation that the hotel lets its guests down. We arrived to a room without toilet roll on the first day, this wasn't helped by a shower curtain that was on incorrectly so wouldn't pull shut properly - I had to take it down and fix it. We had a defective light hanging from the ceiling (pic) and a wardrobe door that would only half open because the fixed wardrobe was too close to the bed (pic)! Finally, the towel rail had begun to loose it silver coating and looked tacky (pic).

Come on 'Best Western' - you can do better. With such a good location, friendly staff and good food, these are easily fixable with more attention to detail. However, the price was extremely competitive and the overall product very good, so recommended but could do better!

We spent 10 days in this hotel for a walking holiday in the Harz region. The town was an excellent base for exploring the region and the hotel was wonderful. The points mentioned in previous reviews about lack of staff did not spoil our time as they were all so cheerful and helpful.
One couple in our group lost their passports on the first day and the hotel management sorted out a trip to the british embassy in Berlin for temporary passports and even met them from the train on the way back. The buffet breakfasts were enormous and our group was seated together for evening meals and they gave us a conference room for our last night's meal. The meals were of a very high standard and comparable to local restaurants. The rooms were very clean and in the old part really quirky. The soundproofing was very good and you couldn't hear neighbours or traffic.
We booked the hotel through the Tourist Board and paid 20 euros each for bus passes lasting 10 days which we collected at the hotel. Well worth it to explore the region.

Room Tip: Some of our group were in the modern part of the hotel and these rooms were like any hotel room. The...

We stayed in one of the self catering apartments for 2 weeks in August 2013.
Our apartment was clean and tidy although a bit basic. The biggest problem was that the rubbish was not emptied often enough.
There is space at the front of the hotel for 4 cars and the rest of the car parking is across the road from the hotel.
Location is good for walking into and around Quedlinburg.

We stayed there for 5 nights in June 2013 in a standard room with TV and mini bar, seperate bathroom with toilet and shower. But the room was on the 3rd floor under the roof and it was very hot even though the outside temperature was rather normal (around 20°C); there is no airco. When we first entered the room there was a strong smell of mold coming from the bathroom. The silicone joints badly needed replacing, we kept the fan going with the bathroom door and the window open (all 5 days) and the smell just about cleared. Not exactly what you expect from a 4 star hotel, and it would never pass a health inspection in that condition.
The breakfast buffet was very nice with something for everyone, the staff were very friendly and helpful, but unable to keep up with tidying the tables for new arrivals, serving coffee and re-stocking the buffet, they were obviously understaffed. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant 3 times and the same happened there; Friendly staff, we didn't have to wait long for the food but any time we wanted a drink or anything else we had trouble getting a waiter to our table. They had to run around too much, the waiters (most of the time they were 2) had to go into the bar to pour out drinks, open wine bottles etc for which they really had no time in between all the rest. They even had to wait the terrace outside which was quite busy at times. There should have been at least an extra person, and this certainly takes a star out of the rating.
There is free WiFi in the hotel, but it works with a hotspot service. At the reception desk you are provided with a username and password both of which you have to enter each time you want to access the internet, not exactly userfriendly. On top of that the download speed is very slow, barely sufficient to check emails.
The hotel is conveniently located at just a short walk from the beautiful town centre which has several nice places for dinner and/or drinks. It has good parking facilities (free of charge) and is a convenient home base for visiting the Harz national park. The tourist office in the town centre offers all kind of info about the region and any activities, definitely worth a visit if you (still) need to decide what to do or where to go in the Harz.
This hotel could be at a 4 star rating but for that they need to reconsider staff management and clean up their (bath)rooms.

Room Tip: avoid the top floor

My all the best feedback words about this beautiful, cozy, clean, caring hotel! It ideally fits to the environment in this quiet medieval German town with its castle, to which only 5 minutes to go through the narrow streets ... We were staying there for three days and have got very-very pleasant experience and excellent impressions!

Lovely well located hotel. Everything in walking distance. Service needs tightening up. Had to search for waiters and desk staff when needed. The first room was noisy and readily changed the next morning.

Room Tip: Avoid room 102
