It is worth to spend some proper time on the outside of the kapelle, where many small paintings hang. Very interesting

We were lucky, as when we visited the urn of Bavarian king Ludwig II was on display (just for two days). lots of visitors so it is quite a que trying to reach the heart of the chapel with the "Altöttinger Madonna". Grace Chapel, octagon, pre-Romanesque octal roundhouse with eight hal-cross shaped Windows. Anno 700 founded by a lanogobardian master (East Germanic people originally residing in Scandinavia) as original baptistery (and therefore one of the oldest in Germany). The ship was lean-to built in 1490. Covered way around the building. Even today pilgrims bear wooden crosses on the shoulders and turn in prayer around the sanctuary. Miracle images and votieft panels remember the mother of God to the concerns and needs of the pilgrims. At the sides of the ship also votif images. Side altars from1668. The altars images show a Pietà and Anna Selbdritt. One enters the octagon trough a Romanesque pillar portal. In the twilight stands the silver altar of grace with in the Middle the grace image. In the interior are valuable oil lamps, one of them was donated by Pope Pius XI in 1854. Vaulted niches show silver votif gifts of the faith of the pilgrims from the Baroque period. In niches are the silver urnes containing the hearts of past Bavarian ruling princes. A west Portal, direction Kapellplatz, adorns a Rococo facade. The Slim Tower on the ship, together with the pointed roof of the Octagon, give the grace Chapel its typical appearance.
