There is a confusing smorgasbord of options when pondering booking a jungle/river experience out of Manaus. The Dolphin Lodge does not have a web site, does not advertise and if you are diligent enough to have found this post you will soon appreciate this is exactly what you have been looking for.
Run by a happy, service oriented hard working third generation Amazonian on the wide, placid banks of Mamori River named Mo. He took a personal and profound interest in maximizing our Jungle and Amazon experience. Be it getting up at 5 to watch the sun rise over the river from a canoe, to grabbing a caiman by the neck during a moonlit adventure, to hacking trails by foot and canoe with his machete so that we can be in awe of the birds, monkeys, sloths, creepy spiders, awesome electric eels and variety of other things that make this lodge at this location a destination to be experienced.

The accommodations are basic, the air conditioning is non existent, there is no internet, the food is wonderfully diverse (love the locally inspired desserts) and the loving care Mo puts into his presentation of the beauty of the Amazon experience is something that you will appreciate as long as you have a memory. Anyone can take you to the Amazon, Mo can make you a part of it. It is the correct choice for anyone who prefers the road less traveled.

Room Tip: They all face the river...you can't go wrong

Dolphin Lodge is truly a hidden gem in the Amazon rainforest. So is the owner and the guide, Mo (Mocinho), a warm-hearted Amazonia.
I stayed there for seven days in December, 12.
The lodge is right on the bank of Amazon River. Walking up twentyish steps in dry season and probably ten or something in the rain season, you are in the lobby of the lodge. I heard other places you may have to carry the luggage walking half an hour to get to the lodge. The view is breathtaking. Looking through the window of the lobby, the river is meandering through in front of you. The dolphins are diving in the water.
The majority of the forest around the lodge is primary rainforest. A jungle walk is just a backyard walk. We saw monkeys every time we took a walk in the forest.
The food and services were great. Fresh fish and tasty tropic fruits every meal, very well cooked. We were there over the Christmas. The dinner on that night was very impressive. I live in DC and I’m a foodie. I give 4 out of 5 to their restaurant.
This is a small lodge. Totally 8 private rooms and some other dorms. The seven days we stayed, there were four or six guests in total. Some days only two of us. It felt like a private tour.
The owner, Mo, has twenty years guide experience in Amazon. He’s a very nice guy, a truly Amazonia. The lodge was built on his family’s private land. His two brothers and his parents live next to the lodge. He knows the area very well. A very knowledgeable guide. Because we lived next to his family, the stay felt more like a home stay. Mo was very nice to accommodate our requests. The last day we joined his brother and friends for a fishing trip the morning. We got chance to really experience the lives of local people.
The activities were very enjoyable and educational. That area is great for dolphin watch, caiman spotting. We even saw a three toes sloth on one trip.
Mo used to partner with Maia Expeditions, but after Maia built his new lodge they split. Maia owns the web site. This is why you don’t see too many reviews for Dolphin Lodge. I would definitely give some credits to Mo for all the great reviews for Maia Expeditions because he was the guide and the lodge the reviewers stayed was Dolphin Lodge.

I was living in Dolphin Lodge during my Amazon trip from Dec 25 to 29, 2012. I really really love it! Not only because of the cleanness, best view to the Amazon river, the food, but more because of the people. The owner of the lodge was a really really nice guy and provided me and my friend wonderful service. Under the situation that there were not enough guides from Manaus to our lodge, he took the role to lead us to walk in the jungle, canoe, and catch the cayman at night! lol He speaks pretty good English and knows almost everything in the Amazon jungle since he is a native here. To thank him we decided to make a small video. Check it out!!
