“The best in Gotha. Just don't ask the impolite stuff...”

From the outside the castle is probably not the most beautiful due to a bad paint job and such... its time to be restored. However you will be surprised to see the inside... There are various beautiful rooms with lots of history. Imagine back in time queen Victoria had visited this place several tie since her husband Albert belonged to that line which was residing here. Still it is in restauration which means many rooms need a paint job badly. Beautiful are the curiosities and the bed room with the new restored bed. You will find also a little egyptian collection and a mummy. I give this place only four stars even though its the best you will find in Gotha. The reason is first of all the stuff. There are not knowledgable and few of them very impolite. I asked them a few questions and got cheeky arrogant answers. There are not a good representation of the castle. Other reason is the badly condition of some parts of that place.

You can find there splendid medieval art, a great exhibition of porcelain (look for the "carrot cup" = a cup with penises :) ), some treasure very similar to those in the ' Green Vault 'in Dresden, castle rooms and of course the theatre

One really can't call this a house, but more of a mega-mansion . It is a beautifully intact piece of architecture with elegant and interesting rooms ,artifacts and artwork. It is a bit overwhelming as there is so much to see but it is definitely a great place to visit for a few hours and get a good understanding of the history of this area and to look at the exquisitely preserved rooms. My favorite part is the rooms one has to wear booties over one's shoes in, to protect the lovely floors. It is fun gliding around. Afterwards walk down the street to the center of the town and and explore. When you reach the bottom of the hill/ street and make a right to go into the main square look for a small shop , on your right just as you enter the square that serves pastries and ice cream. It is a wonderful place to stop in for a pick me up rest one's feet. And the owner is a delightful man.. wish I could remember the name of the place. Gotha is a lovely town with interesting architecture.
