Castle where time stands still

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Sept 2019via mobile
This was our second stay. We stayed 10yr ago. Firstly, it remains exactly as we remembered. Stunning views beautiful rooms. Friendly atmosphere. Breakfast excellent.
Our only negative is that you cannot order food after 6.30pm unless you have booked the 4/5 course meal in the morning. I think it would be a good idea if a small menu was available to guests after being out all day.
Especially for people like us who traveled by train and no car.
As I mentioned time has stood still in the castle.... None of the clocks work 😊

Despite my fear of heights, we stayed in the highest tower room. The room, service and meals were the best overall experience of our week in Germany. The baggage service is included and well worth it. The museum is included with the visit and even the older kids enjoyed it. The private gardens are a perfect way to unwind after a day negotiating the autobahn.

I recently stayed here for three nights. This castle is amazing! The rooms are great, beds very comfortable and plenty of space for 2 people. The staff is outstanding! And the food is incredible! We wondered around the interior of the castle as well as the spacious grounds. The small town of Oberwesle is charming. I recommend the self guided walking tour. We also took the wine tasting tour, which was fun. You can not drive all the way up to the entrance and it is pretty steep walk. I recommend leave your luggage with someone at the parking lot, walk up to reception and ask for someone to get your luggage for you. Enjoy your wonderful experience.

We have now stayed three times in Schonburg, always in the Suite of the Seven Virgins....their best room according to them! After a steep uphill drive to there parking lot, there is another decent uphill climb up through the castle grounds /precincts to reach the main entrance. One person can ride up with the luggage trolley if desired. The staff here-it IS family run!- are exactly what you would expect in Germany......professional, speedy, friendly and helpful. They are great, especially Johann who also oversees the restaurant. Our suite was large and sprawling over numerous areas....a large bedroom with 2 big mullioned windows opening onto an amazing Rhine view.Complimentary sherry and fruit! The bathrooms(!) with amazing old castle decor and a bathtub to swim in! There is a small and cosy library(well stocked). Then there is an outdoor sitting area in an interior of the castle garden setting. Best of all is a large panoramic terrace off the bedroom(on 2 levels) with large table and chairs, and a superb view down the Rhine as far as the Pfalz castle! You feel like a mediaeval Lord gazing down on this fabulous scene! Real life fantasy!
Staying at the castle is on a Half Board basis. Breakfast is a superbly lavish affair, and is usually in season taken on the panoramic restaurant terrace. Dinner is a set 4 course affair, but is high quality presentation. I find the price for all this whimsy to be very reasonable, considering the food included and the space and quality of the accommodation.Schloss Schonburg is a superb place to stay and experience the Rhine Valley!

Room tip: any rhine facing suite...best is suite of seven virgins(!)

We stayed in this hotel the first time we went to Germany, and it was amazing. So amazing that a couple years later we decided we'd go again and make it our little family tradition. I don't think we'll ever go to Germany without staying in this hotel for at least one night ever again. It's that good.

Breakfast is amazing. You can eat in one of the older rooms, or outside on the balcony. They even have breakfast mimosas.

We spent the day exploring the grounds, including the garden that only guests have access to. The garden is large, and incredibly maintained. There are some games scattered throughout, like billards, darts and chess. We played a few games and then went back to our room.

Our room the first time had a secret door that led onto the side of the castle where you can sit and look out at the Rhine river. We love playing cards so we took the complimentary beers from our room and sat out there playing cards. The second time around we picked the room with the private deck, and we sat up there all night looking out onto the river, talking and playing cards, of course.

Dinner was included, and we dressed up a little and had some incredible food. The food is fresh, delicious and german. So good.

We will definitely be staying here again.

My wife and I spent a week here to celebrate our 50th. The castle it self is amazing. The staff goes above and beyond to meet every need you may have. A special thank you to wait staff Tessa, Katarina, Johanna and also Elena(sp?) who has a vast knowledge of the local beers and wine. The whole operation is a well oiled 5 star hotel.

Room tip: Room 35,has a balcony with an incredible view of the Rhine. Be ready to climb some steep and winding stairs!!
