Hotel Nicolay zur Post
Reviewed 2 September 2013

Visited this hotel for one night in order to visit the nearby Wine Festival in Bernekastel Kues. From the moment we walked through the door we were made to feel so very welcome by the manager. We were shown all the facilities which included an indoor pool, sauna and spa suite plus 2 beautiful restaurants, one of these is a vegan restaurant that cultivates its own mushrooms underneath( these can be seen growing under glass in the floor). We didn't eat dinner there but the breakfast was buffet style and had a huge amount of choice. The room was large, ensuite with a balcony (chairs, table, sunbed too) a fantastic view of the spectacular Mosel. WONDERFUL.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front. Room 21 fab

Hotel and room accommodations were very nice. The hotel location is conveniently located near Bernkastel and on the river and we had a nice room with a view. Typical German breakfast. Staff was mostly friendly considering we were Americans.

This is an outstanding hotel with an excellent and friendly staff. great location to explore the Mosel River valley and excellent restaurant in the hotel was. Very accommodating for travelers with pets. I highly recommend staying here and will book again in the future. Excellent balcony that over looks the Mosel River. I also recommending eating at the hotel, excellent food and gracious chef.

Room Tip: Rquest a room with a balcony that overlooks the Mosel river.

We have visited the Mosel region many times and after this, our fourth stay at Hotel Nicolay, I cannot imagine staying anywhere else. The courtesy of the staff and quality of the accommodations will keep me coming back. The terrace dining, even if we have to push the issue at breakfast, is fantastic with its view of the Mosel and nearby lock and dam. The indoor, heated swimming pool is great after a hot bike ride in the summer or a cold walk through the vineyards in winter. It is worth the little extra for a balcony room on the river side of the hotel - even though the rooms on the upper floors on the vineyard side do have a view of the grapes. After refreshing with a local Bitburger beer, move on to any of the local wines to enjoy with a fabulous meal. If you aren't having fun with "Familie Nicolay" and their "Mitarbeiter", you aren't trying hard enough.

Room Tip: Rooms on the river side with a balcony are a must

Ok so what do you want from a hotel ?
Reflecting the charm and character of the Mosel this family run hotel which goes back five generations (and by gum are they proud of it !!) will afford you a lovely personal welcome that will make you feel like your part of the whole Mosel thing and a bit of their family too.
On arrival the owner took us straight to our room carrying our baggage and giving us some brief anecdotes of the immediate region,(Did you know that the region in which the hotel rests is the largest solely riesling grape growing area in the world- well you do now !)
What was wonderfully refreshing was that there was no need for passports or plastic cards on arrival ("hello and welcome to the hotel ***** , may we have your credit card to swipe" is NOT a welcome !)
The hotel has a fine swimming pool and a searingly hot sauna that would challenge the hardest Scandinavian , also there is a wellness therapist there but not every day
Regarding the decor this hotel still hasn't decided what decade or even century to place itself in but then how do you want to look at this ? either neither here nor there or a bit of design nostalgia for everybody and every age group
Seperate breakfast and dining areas is a lovely idea when possible (a lot of Irish five star hotels could take note ! ) and this hotel accomodates accordingly
Staff friendliness and flexibility are a winner here. We would stay here again

Stayed here for one night while cycling along the Moselle. The rooms were very clean and well-appointed; the food was excellent - the dining-room, with its family portraits, gave a sense of a family-run hotel. The staff were always friendly and efficient. The outside dining terrace offers lovely views of the river. Highly recommended!
