“Quaint - with great views”
Reviewed 1 March 2013

If you are a fan of mosel wine - this is ground zero. The hotels in the area are all clearly devoted to wine and its admirers. The Hotel Deutschherrenhof is a beautiful and well-kept hotel that caters mostly to German tourists and their needs. The rooms are cozy and spotless - the views of the Mosel river are truly breathtaking - the food service is perfect.

I have just returned from Germany, the Mosel Valley, with a group or 43 very satisfied customers. We stayed at the Hotel Deutchschherrenhof in Rachtig in the beautiful Mosel Valley. The hotel has ancient roots with an amazing history streching back many centuries, it is comfortable, quircky (with all its rooms different to one another) and in the perfect location for a trip like ours, where we wanted to descover the beautiful parts of the Valley Mosel. The staff were a joy, with Alexandra, the daughter of the hotel owner speaking perfect English, and she and the rest of the hotel staff were most helpful, in making sure that our stay was as good as it could be. The food at the hotel was excellent, and it offers on of the best breakfasts I have ever seen in any hotel, once again thanks to the chefs and all the kitchen staff. I would like to thank all the staff for looking after us so well, and I would recommend this hotel to anyone, and would deffinatly stay in it again. I think the hotel Deutchschherrenhof is a 3 star hotel, but with the trappings and service level of any 5 star hotel.

Room Tip: The rooms are all different, rather quirky but all as good as eachother. With Wii-fi and Tv in ever...

Stayed at the hotel whilst on an organized group trip, the rooms are very clean and well kept with a modern bathroom. The food was varied so plenty to suit everyone. The staff were very friendly and helpful and as it was the run up to Christmas the hotel was beautifully decorated with really tasteful decorations,I would certainly stay again.

We were a group of 35 who originally thought of going to this area at "Christmas Markets" time. But as we are a mature wine appreciation group, this trip obviously needed to include our main interest too!
Trier (about 45 minutes to the east) was the obvious base, but this town quickly gets booked up in December. So we chose the Deutschherrenhof in Rachtig, not to be confused with a similarly named hotel in Trier. Its is a family run hotel with a large slice of history attached, that has been extended over the years, and has connections with the vineyards through Manfred Schmitz, the owner. Fortunately, daughter Alexandra speaks excellent English as she trained in England. Without exception, our group appreciated the rooms with modernised bathrooms, the dining room (good wholesome German cooking - not French nouvelle cuisine), the service, and ambience. The breakfast was excellent, considerably above the norm for this part of Europe, and the three star rating.
We took advantage of Manfred's wine tastings in the atmospheric Keller, and enjoyed a party on the last night in the cosy bar.
The "Knights' dinner", at a 5 euro surcharge, was a lively event enjoyed by all, and as it was 5th December, we had a visit from heavily bearded St Nicholas in his finery together with an evil black Beelzebub at his feet!
We travelled to the picturesque villages of Cochem and Bernkastel, and explored the fascinating Roman city of Trier. Our guide Brigitte, suggested by the hotel, was informative, knowledgeable and absolutely charming. The Christmas Markets - Trier was the best - were an added bonus, and the gluhwein kept the party warm, and in good spirits during the day!
The early snow was the icing on the "cake", and enhanced the vine-clad slopes in this beautiful valley. Truly, a memorable break!
